Objectives of Photonics21 Mirror Group Support the implementation of the Photonics21 strategic research agenda Exchange best practice and promote photonics in national research programmes Create better alignment and co-operation between European and national R&D programmes ie produce a joined-up strategy

5 2. ERANET-Plus Instrument: what and why EN+ is a tool for joint funding between EU, national and regional programmes Aims to foster greater cooperation and alignment Critical mass on a single topic of strategic importance

9 Draft Workplan Objective Development of photonic technologies and system architectures for scalable, future proof and energy efficient access network capable of cost-effective 1 Gb/s access to all (scalable to 10 Gb/s) Focus Components, sub-systems and architectures to achieve the next generation of access, including transceivers, amplifiers, switching/ routing components and manufacturing technology

10 Possible research areas Concepts for cost-effective fibre optic access networks focussing on the physical layer, and including protocols and management. Development of ultra high speed transmission, switching and component technologies and designs to enable the above, Architectures and technologies for seamlessly linking access, backhaul and core networks, including wireline/ wireless systems integration.

11 Recommendations of EC Workshop held 26 September 2008 Scope should be broad Good opportunity to link activities on systems, architectures and components Low cost main issue for components Projects should be industry focussed and led Mixture of small, focussed projects with larger, more integrated ones
