3 Multi-Lead Medics-12 Lead ECG Interpretation 12 leads ECGs and their interpretation can be intimidating, but you can master this process with practice. We will work out the 10 steps to ECG interpretation together and you will learn about Axis, Axis deviation, Bundle Branch Blocks, Sgorbossa s criteria, Hemiblocks, AMI, Vector Analysis, and how to use a systematic approach to multilead ECG analysis. Students are strongly encouraged to bring ECGs from the field that are interesting or cool. They will be projected for the entire class to study as a team. The instructor will use his 20 years of experience to enhance your interpretation abilities and answer any questions you may have. This presentation will have new and interesting things that WILL affect your practice in EMS. Instructor: Thomas Meyer BS- EMS, MICP Location: Fairbanks Memorial hospital imaging center room 252 Time: :00 Cost: $50.00 Date: March 31st Clinical Skills for Rural Healthcare Providers Because of it s remoteness, there are very few doctors or midlevel practitioners in most of the rural communities and remote sites in Alaska. Many years ago the Community Health Aide Program (CHAP) was developed to fill this void. CHAPs as they are called are individuals trained to provide primary and emergency care to remote communities and are found in almost all of the rural native villages in Alaska. This daylong session is designed for the CHAPs, other rural mid- Interior Region EMS Council, Inc. level providers, and rural site medics. Dr. BJ Coopes, along with other instructors, will cover clinical topics such as fever in children, asthma, discuss how to identify how sick a child really is, review and practice basic splinting and casting of fractures, IV s and IOs, new spinal standards, suturing of soft tissue injuries, and wound care. Instructors: BJ Coopes, MD, Kathy Mcleron Pac, Kathy Griffin NREMT-P Location: Interior Region EMS Council, Inc th Avenue Cost: $ Date: March 31, 2011 Time: 8:30AM-5:00 PM Page 3 Page 3

7 Topics Summary Friday, April 1st 01: Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll; an Exploration of EMS Ethics Ethics in EMS is a complicated and difficult issue. Would you turn in your friend if they show up to work/on call and they smell like alcohol? What if they aren't your friend, would you turn them in then? Should paid EMS responders accept discounts and free stuff from local businesses? How about volunteers, should they get free stuff? Should you date a co-worker or fellow responder? What about a dispatcher? What kind of music should you listen to on the radio when transporting or how about sitting around at the station? 02: Atypical Stroke: Time is brain and your assessment and transport decision may make the difference between a good outcome or a life long disability. This talk will focus on those stroke patients that often go misdiagnosed or perplex us in the field. All strokes are not one-sided weakness, slurred speech, and one sided arm drift. 03: Challenging Pediatric Patients Pediatric patients can challenge our brains and our hearts. This Pediatric Intensivist is still learning from each child we meet and will show how these patients can improve our care of future patients. Real-life scenarios and active participation is expected. Bring your own cases for input and Stump the Intensivist. 04: Breaking Badly Breaking Badly discusses acute orthopedic injuries that are commonly seen by EMS providers. They are serious in nature and should not be overlooked during patient assessment. A quick, but more in-depth extremity neurovascular exam will be demonstrated. The session will also provide expanded information not typically included in initial EMS training like reductions of specific dislocations as well as rationale for selection of fracture immobilization devices. 05: Using ACLS & PALS Algorithms Students taking PALS and ACLS classes often come away confused or unsure just exactly how to use or apply the algorithms to real life situations. This lecture will review the ACLS and PALS algorithms in order to supplement some gaps the instructor has noticed while teaching classes in the community. I will review rhythm recognition and differentiate between which algorithm to use. There will also be a discussion of the 2015 updates for PALS and ACLS. Interior Region EMS Council, Inc. Page 7

8 Interior Region EMS Council, Inc. Symposium at a Glance Saturday, April 2nd, :30 10:00 AM 06: Burns with William W. Wennen MD 10:00-10:30 AM BREAK 10:30-12:00 PM 07: Underused Techniques & Equipment in EMS with Kathy (Griffin) Roberts NREMT-P 08: "D*mn it Jim, I m Not a Doctor, Drug Interactions with Thomas Meyer 12:00-1:00 PM LUNCH 1:00-2:30 PM 09: Hey, what is that thing? with Kathy Mcleron 10: Blast Trauma Management with Dr. Dillon 2:30-2:45 PM BREAK 2:45-4:25 PM 11: 25 Insane Facts About Alaska EMS with Mark J. 9 Topics Summary Saturday, April 2nd 06: Burns Burns always send a shudder through even to the most experienced providers. This visual aid assisted lecture will discuss all levels, types and mechanisms of the burn injury. Field evaluation of burn injury extent, associated complication, concomitant other system injuries, complicating necessary field evaluation, and initiation of resuscitate care will be explored in depth. Extensive visual aids describing the above will be used for demonstration and clarification. 07: Underused Techniques & Equipment in EMS: Have a vacuum board in your rig just gathering dust because no one knows how to use it? Think capnography is just about monitoring tube placement? Exploring ideas for new airways, airway placement techniques or devices? Knowing you need to stabilize and minimalize potential space in hip fractures, but you are looking for a better way? Let s think outside the ambulance box for a bit and explore some new solutions to these challenges and more. 08: "D*mn it Jim I'm an EMT, not a doctor!" EMS Drug-Drug interactions and how not to be the grim reaper This session will examine EMS drugs from Oxygen to Adenosine. We will discuss how the various tools in our EMS tool box interact with each other and with common prescription medications. This informative and exciting lecture will reveal things you may not know about EMS drugs. If we have enough time, we might touch on some unusual antidotes as well. 09: Hey, what is that thing? With shorter hospital stays and sicker patients, prehospital EMS providers and Community Health Aides are seeing more patients with many new medical technologies implanted in their bodies or in use in their homes. Some of these are easily recognizable, while others may prompting us to ask the question 10: Blast Trauma Management This lecture will be an overview of blast related injuries. The focus is on pre-hospital management and evacuation. Hemorrhage control, airway management, pre-hospital fluid resuscitation, and MEDEVAC considerations of blast trauma victims. Overview of pathophysiology and initial resuscitation and stabilization of poly-trauma associated with baro and blast wave injuries. 11: 25 Fun Insane Facts about Alaska EMS Alaska is #1 in many things. Find out what makes Alaska EMS both more challenging and more fun. Trauma rates, STD rates, communication issues, and Aurora patient care reporting issues all contribute to the knowledge of what our EMS providers must deal with and this class will provide that background and some solutions. 12: L-A-B-C-D-E-F-G The Alphabet Approach to Patient Assessment This will bring us Back to the Basics by looking at patient assessment using an organized and logical approach. We will learn the new terminology associated with patient assessments based on the 2009 National EMS Educational Standards. We will work through several case studies to apply theses basics.
