FLOURISH FALL 2014 Looking back and ahead James A. Diegel, FACHE President and CEO St. Charles Health System BOARD OF DIRECTORS Tom Sayeg, Chair Knute Buehler, MD, Vice Chair Dennis Dempsey, D.Ed Doug Downer Mack Gardner, LTC U.S. Army (Ret.) Megan Haase, FNP Bob Hakala, MD Lauri Miller Dan Schuette Greg Van Pelt Jim Diegel, Ex Officio ABOUT FLOURISH Flourish is produced three times a year by St. Charles Health System 2500 NE Neff Road Bend, Oregon FLOURISH STAFF Lisa Goodman Kendra Lavery Jordan Kayley Mendenhall For more than 20 years, I ve had the privilege of serving and supporting the health care system in Central Oregon the past eight as president and CEO of St. Charles Health System. In that time, St. Charles has grown from two hospitals to four covering the entire Central Oregon region. We have integrated care for patients by developing St. Charles Medical Group which now numbers more than 180 health care providers and have led the way in providing our patients with a medical home. Innovative ideas like embedding behavioral health providers in our primary care clinics have received national acclaim while making a real difference in outcomes for our patients. We have invested in health care technology, including moving all four hospitals to one electronic medical records system, and worked with local physician groups to ensure that health information can be accessed from one system to another. These efforts have made our patients safer and given our caregivers the tools they need to provide the highest quality care. As a team, we have worked to secure the financial stability of the organization by restructuring our debt and improving our processes. We have updated and expanded our facilities through numerous construction projects that will benefit our patients and their families for decades to come. I am proud of the incredible strides the health system has made and am thankful for the many caregivers who work every day to help achieve our vision: Creating America s healthiest community, together. As I prepare to step down from my position, I know that St. Charles will continue to be a leader in health care transformation. Our strategic partnership with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement will ensure we remain on the cutting edge of health care innovations. And our caregivers will continue to make St. Charles an incredible place filled with love, hope and healing. I have always believed that St. Charles has a sacred trust with the community. It is our role to provide care for all and our responsibility to create better health, better care and better value for those who walk through our doors. Find health tips, links to articles and news on our Facbook and Twitter pages. Thank you for allowing me, and all of our caregivers, to be stewards of that sacred trust. Be well, 2

stcharleshealthcare.org Kim Anderson shows her butterfly necklace - a gift she received when graduating from nursing school. The Soul and Science of Caring St. Charles caregivers learn to re-connect to their calling Several months ago, about 200 St. Charles caregivers began an 18-month learning experience known as the Soul and Science of Caring. The goal of the program is to help caregivers throughout the organization reconnect to their reasons for pursuing a career in health care. Participants started the process with a two-day retreat where they learned many techniques to help them be fully present in their work be it when caring directly for patients, cleaning rooms, preparing food, registering patients or answering questions about bills. For Kim Anderson, a nurse at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Prineville, the two-day retreat was exactly what she needed to recharge her nursing batteries. On my very next shift after the retreat, I walked into an impossible situation, Anderson said. There were 32 people in the waiting room and everybody was falling apart. I could tell that something tragic was happening on our floor. She headed for the locker room and took a deep breath, silently asking for something she had learned in the Soul and Science of Caring to be able to float like a butterfly on the wind and to help the family by meeting them wherever and however they needed her. Throughout her shift her patient s condition continued to deteriorate, but Anderson said she called on the Soul and Science of Caring tools and found she could be there for her patient and the family. After the patient died, although Anderson couldn t physically wrap her arms around each of the grandchildren who were present and provide a 20-second hug as recommended to release serotonin she grabbed warm blankets and wrapped each tightly generating the same result. On that day, Anderson said, she didn t feel that she did anything heroic or spectacular. She did her job but the Soul and Science of Caring experience helped her be in a place to do that job to the best of her ability. One goal of the program is to help all of us remember that every interaction can be healing for ourselves and others, explained Nancy Pennell, chief learning officer for St. Charles Health System. All whose paths cross ours may be suffering in subtle ways. Although we may not be able to cure everyone, we can do our best to be a healing presence. Along with providing tools to care for others, the Soul and Science of Caring has taught Anderson how to care for herself. I am that person who will give and give and give until there is nothing left of me, she said. This program has reminded me how important it is to tend to my own well-being. My own soul. One day after experiencing a traumatic incident in her neighborhood at home, Anderson said she walked into work and immediately saw a fellow Soul and Science of Caring participant. The two of them and a third caregiver spent a few minutes doing a group breathing exercise and listening to some of the music from the retreat to help Anderson prepare for her shift. It seems like every day I meet somebody else who is involved in it, Anderson said. We have developed this really neat relationship. Your reason for being here is aligned with my reason for being here even if you are in housekeeping or administration. We are all in this together. 3

FLOURISH FALL 2014 Remodeling the tower St. Charles Bend construction project to improve privacy, add space to patient rooms New parking plan on Bend campus Visiting St. Charles Bend can mean a challenge when it comes to finding a parking place. Starting in mid-october, the hospital will institute a new parking plan and hopes to make parking for patients and visitors an easier, more straightforward experience. As part of this plan, look for new signage on the roads leading into the Bend hospital indicating which parking lots are for patients and visitors and which are designated for caregivers. In addition, community members attending events at the hospital will be asked to park in the designated event parking area. Maps with the new parking plan will be available on the St. Charles website soon. For nearly two years, leaders at St. Charles Bend have been working on plans and discussing a project that will extend the lifespan of the aging facility and improve privacy and comfort for patients, families and caregivers. The $27.7 million project known as the Bend tower remodel will begin in early October. It will take more than two years to complete and will require patience on the part of caregivers and the community. This is the biggest project I ve been involved with in terms of potential disruption and the length of time, said Rick Martin, vice president of construction and real estate for St. Charles Health System, who has worked for the organization for 36 years. The benefits are going to be great when we are done. The rooms on the third, fourth and fifth floors of the Bend hospital tower will be 30 percent larger in size and half of the rooms will have ADA accessible bathrooms when the project is complete. Aging electrical and plumbing systems will be updated and the new windows will be double glazed to allow better control of temperatures in the rooms. The core areas in the middle of the floors will be redesigned to support the work process of the caregivers and to improve the overall flow. construction and real estate for St. Charles. In addition, an acoustic engineer has been engaged to consult on the project and provide expertise on how to reduce the noise in the rooms adjacent to the construction. This project has been approached with the patient and staff in mind in terms of dust and noise, Walker said. We are concerned about the sound transmission between the patient rooms and are working with the design team on construction materials that will help keep the rooms quiet. In each phase of the project, 12 patients rooms will be remodeled at once four on each floor. When the hospital is busy, it s possible that patients will be placed into double occupancy rooms at times. Those in rooms close to the construction zones will be offered ear plugs, sound machines and other amenities to ensure their stay is as pleasant and healing as possible. Saws make noise. Cranes make noise and dust, Martin said. We want people to understand that we are doing this project to improve our patient care experience and to expand the life of this hospital which truly is a community asset. Essentially, in the end, we will have a new hospital that will last at least another 30 years. 4 Teams have spent months designing the new rooms to ensure maximum efficiency, said Jim Walker, director of Watch the St. Charles website for updates on the Bend tower remodel project over the coming months.

stcharleshealthcare.org St. Charles Family Care opens in Madras Jinnell Lewis MD, Aimee Neill MD, not pictured: Patricia Spencer MD Drs. Aimee Neill and Jinnell Lewis love to do something different every day. So when it came time to choose their specialty in medical school, family medicine was the obvious path. The idea that I can deliver a baby in the morning, go see kids in my office then go see patients who are on hospice just kind of the whole range is very enjoyable to me, Neill said. Neill and Lewis, along with a third physician, Dr. Patricia Spencer, are bringing their passion for rural family medicine to their new positions at St. Charles Family Care in Madras. The clinic, which opens Sept. 15, will offer a full spectrum of care that includes family medicine, obstetrics and behavioral health. Located next to the St. Charles Madras hospital, the clinic also plans to offer the services of visiting specialists. Dr. Robert Ross, St. Charles medical director of community health strategies, said the new physicians will increase the community s access to care and provide support to the hospital. Local care is often better especially for those with transportation issues, Ross said. We hope to be able to provide better access to local tests and surgeries, as well as outpatient and inpatient hospital services. Neill, a graduate of Marshall University s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, completed her family medicine residency and an additional year of training in obstetrics at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System in South Carolina. She has also volunteered her time in clinics in Peru and Honduras, and hopes to one day open her own clinic abroad. A native of West Virginia, Neill said the new Madras clinic offers her the opportunity to practice family medicine and obstetrics just as she envisioned it. [The Madras clinic] just kind of offered the best of both worlds, she said. I can have my full-spectrum practice and my patients. But if something is complicated, there are board-certified OB-GYNs 20 minutes away [at the St. Charles Center for Women s Health in Redmond]. For Lewis, too, practicing family medicine in a rural setting has strong appeal. Once I started doing rural rotations in small towns and fell in love with it, I knew I wanted to be in a small area, which seemed easier to do as a family practitioner as opposed to obstetrics and gynecology, said Lewis, a graduate of Oregon Health & Science University. I didn t want to miss out on taking care of a whole family. Spencer who is moving from Douglas, Wyo., where she was affiliated with Caribou Memorial Hospital and Living Center received her medical degree from the University of Chile School of Medicine and has been in practice for 26 years. While Spencer specializes in family medicine with obstetrics, she also has experience in executive management. Some of the positions she held include CEO and medical director of a major cancer hospital in Chile, and as the cancer program manager of the state of Florida s Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. In addition to her medical degree, she holds master s degrees in business administration, medical science and public health. Passionate about preventive medicine, Spencer said the health system s vision, mission and values align with her philosophical approach to health are. She said she is eager to help make Madras a healthier community. I m just thrilled with Madras, she said. I ve been there four times already and I think it s a lovely place. The people are really nice. For more information or to make an appointment at St. Charles Family Care in Madras, call

FLOURISH FALL 2014 Treating women through each stage of life New Center for Women s Health open in Redmond St. Charles Family Care in Prineville now open Saturdays Starting Sept. 6, St. Charles Family Care in Prineville will be open for walk-in appointments from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. The clinic, which recently hired new physicians Dr. Natalie Trent Good and Dr. Nathan Reed, provides comprehensive, affordable medical care along with access to specialty services. Call for more information. Nicole Barbier smiled as Dr. Natalie Hoshaw measured her pregnant belly and told her everything was on track for a delivery in late August. The second-time mom said visiting the new St. Charles Center for Women s Health in Redmond was a calm and inviting experience especially when compared with the former location of St. Charles OB/GYN in Redmond. It s much more spacious here and feels more professional, said Barbier, who owns a Redmond restaurant with her husband. Having this type of health care available makes me feel better about living here and raising a family here. The St. Charles Center for Women s Health opened in early August at 340 NW 5th St. in downtown Redmond. It has 14 exam rooms, including two procedure rooms, and is home to four OB/GYNs, one nurse practitioner and the only certified nurse midwife in Central Oregon. The space speaks for itself in terms of the aesthetics, but what s more important is the services that we aim to provide, Hoshaw said. We plan to bring in visiting specialists to consult in gynecologic oncology, sexual dysfunction and alternative medicine including acupuncture all in one location. Dr. Barbara Newman, medical director of the Center for Women s Health and the visionary behind the project, agreed that bringing in specialists and expanding staffing are the next priorities now that the facility is open. She said the plan is to add more nurse practitioners, a menopausal specialist, a sexual health specialist and lactation services in the coming months. The public is invited to attend a grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting at the Center for Women s Health from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 18. After the grand opening, Newman said she plans to start offering community educational events at the center on a variety of women s health topics. We are centrally located in Central Oregon and hope that all women feel comfortable visiting us for their care, for educational events and for specialist consultations when needed, Newman said. We are looking forward to being here to serve our communities for many years to come. 8

stcharleshealthcare.org St. Charles Hospice Services now available in Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson Counties Hospice. The word alone triggers an array of responses sadness and grief, wonder and gratitude, help and understanding. Recognizing the important role hospice plays in the continuum of care throughout a person s life, St. Charles is proud to now offer hospice services throughout Central Oregon most recently adding Deschutes County. It can be a really tough time, but it can also be a time of great opportunity, said Sharon Strohecker, director of St. Charles Hospice s southern services. It s a time for families to come together and resolve issues. We don t do a good job in our society of talking about death and dying. In Central Oregon, Strohecker said that 68 percent of deaths are served by hospice. She and Mary Shockey, director of St. Charles Hospice s northern services, would like to see that number grow to at least 80 percent so that more people have the opportunity to die at home if that is their wish. Hospice provides family caregivers with access to medical experts and support services at all hours of the day and night. We have medical professionals who come right into our home and have medical professionals available to us by phone instantly, said the daughter of a St. Charles Hospice patient. It has made all the difference in the world to us. Those who have experienced St. Charles Hospices services first-hand say the caregivers have incredible hearts and passion for the job. Some families have said simply that they would have been lost without the hospice caregivers helping them through such a difficult time. Hospice support includes medical caregivers, experienced hospice physicians, nurses, certified nurses aides and medical social workers. In addition, families have access to supportive spiritual care and compassionate volunteers who do everything from run errands to provide company and respite services. They have the gift of God with them, said the sister of another St. Charles Hospice patient. They all have little angel wings. That s the best way to describe it. Strohecker said the goal of St. Charles Hospice is to improve patients quality of life and address the physical, psychological, social, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their families. The hospice team also provides bereavement services to families after the loss of their loved ones. We respect patient wishes to die a natural death in a familiar environment with comfort, peace and dignity, she said. 10 FLOURISH FALL 2014 Art therapy Many local artists contributed to St. Charles Cancer Center 10 Updated animal policy at St. Charles In an effort to improve safety and cleanliness, starting Oct. 1 St. Charles Health System facilities will be open to service animals only. Pet therapy programs will continue with a few modifications to further enhance patient safety. Visitors should plan on not bringing animals and pets into St Charles facilities after Oct. 1. If you look closely, you can find a jackrabbit hiding in the tile mural that adorns the waiting area just inside the entryway to the new St. Charles Cancer Center. It s the only animal in the piece, said Sisters artist Kathy Deggendorfer, who was commissioned to make the mural titled Healing Horizons. The mural, which is made up of dozens of tiles painted by Deggendorfer, shows a view of the Cascade Mountains with Pilot Butte prominent in the front. In the yearlong process of creating the piece, she went from house to house, knocking on doors and asking if she could stand on people s decks to paint the view. I wanted the piece to encompass the whole area that St. Charles serves, Deggendorfer said. My husband went through prostate cancer and I know that the environment where treatment takes place really makes a difference for everyone the patients and the caregivers. Many local artists contributed to the new cancer center through donations of photography, fiber applique, sculptures, paintings and much more. The art that is on display throughout the cancer center is meant to provide patients with a healing environment. Art in Public Places, a nonprofit that provides art to various locations in Bend, donated Dreamweaver, a brushed stainless steel sculpture by Portland artist Eric Holt. The sculpture is on display in the healing garden outside of the cancer center and is designed to move when touched so that observers can interact with the work of art. What makes the sculpture absolutely stunning is that this beautiful work of art turns on its base, said Sue Hollern, Arts in Public Places president. Arts in Public Places is thrilled that Dreamweaver has been installed in the healing garden to be enjoyed by patients and visitors alike. All of the art on display throughout the cancer center will make a difference for patients who receive cancer treatment. We are so grateful to the many artists who contributed to this project, said Dr. Linyee Chang, medical director of the St. Charles Cancer Center. Their talents are providing peace to our patients during a difficult time and we know from many scientific studies that having a peaceful, warm, comforting environment lowers stress and is beneficial to the overall health outcomes of the population we serve.

In addition, we received 100 percent participation by the boards at St. Charles Foundation and St. Charles Health System. My husband came to the cancer center and had radiation treatment. Everyone was so wonderful to us, said Judy Beam, explaining why she decided to buy a brick to be placed in the healing garden. I wanted to be a part of it. I bought a brick for my husband. Dennis Laird, who worked for St. Charles Health System in the biomedical department for 36 years before retiring recently, said he supported the campaign as a caregiver and as a For me, personally, the old facility was very depressing. It felt more death like than life giving, said Dr. Norwyn Newby, a retired neurosurgeon and volunteer for the Foundation who supported the cancer center campaign.
