1 NEVADA SENIOR SERVICES Adult Day Care Center of Henderson Newsletter September 2018 September is National CLASSICAL MUSIC MONTH. We will be embracing the music at the Adult Day Care Centers of Las Vegas & Henderson. A 2015 study led by Dr. Walter Verrusio of Sapienza University Rome looked at classical music and it s effect on the brain. The study showed Mozart s Sonata for two pianos in D Major K448 increased the brain activity related to memory. Watch for programs at our Centers in the coming months with the Las Vegas Philharmonic! Other activities will celebrate this month are OCCUPATIONS and WORLD PEACE DAY. We will be celebrating occupations in honor of Labor Day on the week of September 3rd (We are OPEN regular hours on Labor Day September 3rd). Please share interesting stories about occupations so we can include them in our activities! September 21st is WORLD PEACE DAY. We will be celebrating world peace the week of September 17th (and every day..) by singing songs, writing poems and creating the Peace Wheel. Please share YOUR wishes for World Peace and add them to our wheel. Adult Day Care Center of Las Vegas 901 N. 4 GETTING SCENT-IMENTAL AHHHH Need to relax? Lavender contains an oil that has sedating effects and might relax certain muscles. It also has antibacterial and antifungal effects. A client study using lavender patches in 3 nursing homes in Japan showed less falls and agitation vs. clients who had a placebo. DID YOU KNOW? A lemon contains 70% sugar and strawberries contain only 40% of sugar. The reason that the lemon tastes sour even having more sugar than the strawberry is that the lemon contains a high amount of citric acid, usually 3% to 6%, that dominates the sweet taste of the lemon and results in a tart, sour taste. Lemons are a good source of vitamin C and even with the sugar content, lemon juice can help with weight loss and insulin resistance. We have Tai Chi/ Chi Kung & Yoga Classes. Tai Chi/Chi Kung & Yoga are a combination of choreographed seated or standing movement, sound vibrations and guided meditations. These practices promote healing and relaxation by releasing negative emotions such as worry, anxiety, grief and anger. Wednesday night is Caregiver Yoga! See What s in Bloom! Our Serenity Garden is in full bloom. We are now seeing the blooms on the Red Apple and the Hearts & Flowers. Our seniors are basking in the early morning sunlight in a beautiful serene setting. OWN YOUR OWN MASTERPIECE Proceeds from the purchase of art work, calendars or cards help fund art supplies and other specialties at the Adult Day Care Centers of Las Vegas & Henderson.
