1 NEVADA SENIOR SERVICES Adult Day Care Center of Las Vegas Newsletter June 2018 It s June and the Adult Day Care Center of Las Vegas is celebrating fathers, summer, laughter, music, iced teas and barbeque grilling. Summer is a time to enjoy family and friends. It s time to take it easy and relax. June is Tea, Safety and Handshake Month. There s a lot to be said about a good handshake: So shake a hand at our Center and make a friend. June is also Alzheimer s and Brain Health Awareness Month. Nevada Senior Services offers FREE baseline memory screenings in our GAP Geriatric Assessment program. Also watch for our 2nd Brain Health Fair this fall in Henderson. 2 Highlights from May Patriotic Paint Project: A Red White and Blue string art project, poems and discussions about honoring veterans who gave their lives to serve our country on this special Memorial Day Holiday. Participants also donned their red noses to raise awareness of child poverty. The excitement of our 2 May holidays, Cinco de Mayo and Mother s Day, had our Centers celebrating. Our Fiesta and Mother s Day Luncheon were lively and fun. We honored our mothers with a sweet mother s day Love watch. The Bobkatz entertained our participants with a one-hour variety show of music, jokes and laughter. We would like to thank Chef John and sous chef Cynthia for the tasty holiday feasts. The Rock N My Workout group graduated and received a certificate and a smart Rock N My Workout t-shirt. The most significant gift, thanks to OT intern and program designer Carly Blondin, was the group s improved balance, mobility and strength. Way to GO! WE ARE PROUD! 2

4 GETTING SCENT-IMENTAL Our aromatherapy scent for June is Cinnamon. This spice has been used for its flavor and healing properties over thousands of years. Some studies have shown that it may help your brain health, lower glycemic levels in type II diabetes and lower cholesterol. DID YOU KNOW? The top cancer fighting foods and spices are: Berries, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, carrots, celery, cilantro, citrus fruits, flaxseed, garlic, ginger, onions, parsley, parsnips, peppers, tomatoes, turmeric, and whole grains. How do you help prevent cataracts? The best way is simple, wear sunglasses to protect the cornea from light. They should be good sunglasses that block out all ultraviolet light below 400 nanometers. Those who do not wear sunglasses regularly often experience cataracts 10 to 15 years earlier than those who do. Good sunglasses are helpful in preventing macular degeneration as well. Our participants are taking weekly strolls through the garden to see the fruits of their labor. Marissa is a California native and previously worked as a medical assistant at UNLV. Patricia Swierupski, LPN New Nurse at Adult Day Care Center of Las Vegas. A native New Yorker, Patricia has an extensive background in geriatrics, pediatrics and home health. NEW PROGRAM support and care coordination for patients living with Alzheimer's and other dementias who are hospitalized, and their caregivers. Special Note.. Please keep an eye out for flyers and notices. We are making every attempt to keep everyone informed on all the exciting events and programs through Nevada Senior Services Vegas and Henderson. The 2 hour assessment includes memory screening and mood scale, medication review, nutrition review, eye sight screening, function/fall risk assessment and medical assessment. GAP clinic includes a Geriatric Physician, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker and Nurse. GAP addresses Caregiver concerns and can also provide/renew adult day care annual physicals. To schedule, Call or for detailed information Be Well Series are free lunch and learn programs for senior adults 60+ presented throughout the Las Vegas Valley. There are 3 modules of the Be Well Series covering information on Nutrition, Chasing the Blues Away and Sleep. Each program has a seated activity including yoga, chi kung, laughing yoga, dance, mindfulness and relaxation techniques Aging Mastery Program This NCOA program is designed to empower older adults to make and maintain small but impactful changes in their lives. The ten classes, facilitated by experts in their field, explore navigating longer lives, physical activity, sleep, healthy eating and hydration, financial fitness, medication management, advanced planning, healthy relationships, falls prevention, and community engagement

Care Consultation Telephone support for ALL caregivers across the lifespan Caring for You, Caring for Me A ten-hour workshop with professional and family caregivers working together to reduce barriers and improve the caregiving experience Care Transitions Supports adults with memory loss and their caregivers for care transitions from hospital to home.
