2 Hanger Residency Program In 1996, Hanger Clinic established a national residency program that is responsible for the organization, recruitment, management, and oversight of all Hanger/NCOPE accredited residency sites across the United States. Since that time, we have trained over 800 Orthotic and Prosthetic residents at our 150+ NCOPE accredited residency sites. We offer a comprehensive, state of the art, patient care oriented training environment that focuses on the development of new practitioners in the most efficient, effective manner possible. In addition, we have established Primary Training Centers that are especially focused on resident training within a structured medical residency model. Our resident graduates perform much better than the national average on the certificate and licensure board exams and the vast majority remains with Hanger to become industry leaders in education, clinical practice, business, and management. With several business units serving different segments of the O&P industry, Hanger Clinic continues to find new ways to empower human potential for those with physical challenges, while remaining true to our rich history of superior clinical outcomes and customer service. Our Mission Our mission is to prepare the new graduate for competent, autonomous clinical practice in the field of orthotics and prosthetics. We utilize a comprehensive, gradual experiential model within a broad-based professional and academic environment conducive to the education and training of tomorrow s corporate and industry leaders. Primary Training Centers Hanger Clinic has strategically placed Primary Training Centers throughout the continental United States. These premium residency locations have the benefits of: Scope of Practice: The clinic has a patient base that is diverse relative to age, etiology, and diagnostic sub groups. Volume: The clinic has sufficient patient interactions to give the residents enough repetitions to improve their skills. Oversight/Teaching Environment: The clinic has a commitment from its clinicians to dedicate the time and energy to train residents on a daily basis. This practice treats a wide variety of patients including Pediatrics, Geriatrics, and Athletes. We provide care in a wide variety of settings that include acute hospital care, inpatient rehab programs, Skilled Nursing Centers, home care, and off-site clinics in addition to our primary clinic site. We utilize both old technology, such as Joint-n-Corsets and metal and leather KAFOs, as well as advanced technology including Insignia Scanning System, UE Myo-electric Prosthetics, Stance Control Orthotics, Vacuum suspension technology, and a variety of micro-processor feet and knees. The Orthotic and Prosthetic fabrication takes place at our Central Fabrication Facility located just ten minutes from our clinic allowing residents hands-on training with our Certified Technicians to gain understanding of the fabrication materials and processes. We have affiliations with Wright State University Medical School and University of Dayton Physical Therapy Doctorate Program. Our residents have the opportunity to observe surgery and participate in clinics and research projects with Orthopedic and Trauma residents.

4 Residency Director Carrie Melton, CPO After high school, Carrie knew she wanted to do something in the medical field, but she wasn t sure what. She worked as a technician over one summer, thinking she d do that until she figured out what she wanted to do, shortly thereafter, she realized that orthotics and prosthetics interested her and was something she wanted to pursue. She earned her certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics and for more than 34 years, her interest in patients and their circumstances have led Carrie into all aspects of the O&P field. She continues to learn and grow as a practitioner as well as using her vast knowledge and love of outdoor sports to continue to improve the lives of her patients. Although her mission is to enhance the lives of others by helping them get up and walk, Carrie wants to take it to the next step. She wants to help her patients truly walk the walk of life. Residency Preceptors Mark Horwitz, CPO Whether it is using CAD/CAM technology or serving on the R&D team for the Charleston Bending Brace, Mark Horwitz is at the forefront of innovation in orthotics. He is also committed to using these breakthroughs to better serve the residents of Dayton. My goal is to be number one in service to this community, says Horwitz. To physicians, that means assisting them in providing effective care to their patients. To patients, my job is to help them help themselves, to give them the orthotic tools they need to become more productive. To insurers, service means offering value: being available to their members, staying on top of developments in the field, and producing functional outcomes cost-effectively. Michelle Poeppelman, CPO For as long as she could remember, Michelle had always been interested in the medical field. After spending time with multiple professionals in various fields, she decided orthotics and prosthetics was the perfect fit for her. She is committed to her patients using her creativity and patience to successfully evaluate, fit, and adjust orthoses and prostheses. Michelle is kept on her toes by seeing a variety of diagnoses and patient populations no day is ever the same!
