1 Montana Nurses Association Approved Provider Newsletter August, 2018 ANPD Session Summaries Cheryl Richards (Whitefish, MT): Session Title A Tale as Old as Time: the Magic of Orientation Redesign Have you ever wanted to make a change but weren t sure how it would work in your facility? I was feeling that way about my orientation check list. It wasn t clear and was viewed by my preceptors differently. I needed a clear standardized orientation checklist that also would address standardized evaluation between preceptors. I had some ideas but wasn t sure how to put it all together. I found it and was able to network with other nurse professional development specialist when I attended a great session at ANPD that clarified exactly what I was looking for. When I returned from convention I set to creating this new evidence-based checklist and presented it to leadership. First, it demonstrated to leadership a return on investment for my participation in this conference. Next, it illustrated how convention benefits the staff and patients. The leadership group were pleased with the draft checklist and have given the green light to the building and roll-out. Convention is more than education it is a benefit to those we serve in our role as nursing professional development specialists. Carolyn Poirier MSN RN-BC (Spokane, WA): Session Title Strategizing Implementation of a Collaborative Clinical Learning Council This was presented by educators from Orlando Health, a very large system that has a 10,000 sq. ft. learning center! They implemented a corporate clinical strategy learning council to triage many interprofessional learning requests. The council developed an online request process. They do split clinical and nonclinical requests. I was impressed by some of the assessment questions asked on the request form: What are you trying to achieve? How does this request link with organizational goals and
2 strategy? How will the effectiveness of the learning be evaluated? The Council meets online weekly and prioritizes requests based on patient safety, improving patient outcomes, and competency of healthcare workers. An educator liaison is assigned based on the request priority status. I hope to implement part of this strategy to my own organization which handles many education requests. Jean Bulmer (Gainesville, FL): Session Title - Imagine! Bette Case Di Leonardi was the speaker for the opening session Imagine! at the ANPD Convention on July 17 th. She had a number of forecasts for the future of Nursing Professional Development. Below are the ones I could identify with: Change will define NPD practice Technology, including simulation, will affect every aspect of NPD practice Education will be individualized, mobile and on demand Data management and analysis will be critical skills for NPD practitioners Clinical expertise will not be the basis of NPD practice, teaching expertise will be The NPD role will be as a consultant, manage projects. Subject matter experts will deliver content The trend will be toward higher-level evaluation it will be essential to measure return on investment Brenda Donaldson (Bozeman, MT): Wow! What an exciting, inspiring, yet overwhelming ANPD Conference The amount of pertinent education made my head spin! I attended the session titled Journal Clubs as a Key to Developing NPD Practitioners Evidencebased Practice Skills. At Bozeman Health, we are currently in the process of building and strengthening our EBP program. Our NPD Practitioners will be a key piece acting as mentors in this endeavor. This session emphasized the process of starting with small attainable goals within the circle of NPD practitioners to gain skills and confidence in systematically reviewing literature and then branching to include organizational initiatives and programs. Cheryl Miller (Seffner, FL): After attending the ANPD Convention in Orlando, I think my greatest take home points were the value of the convention in assisting all levels of nurse educators to learn more about their chosen professional specialty Nursing Professional Development, the networking opportunities, and sharing of best practice nationally and internationally. There were sessions for all levels of NPD professionals and all specialty locations available to be taken advantage of. Many of the sessions were based on our common plight of providing education at a distance, using innovative technology, and serving multiple specialties in our organizations. One thing, I took advantage of this convention was orientation to the Content Planning Committee (CPC) role and responsibilities in helping with the Annual Convention. I am serving on the content planning committees. Joining this committee has already been a valuable learning experience for me and has brought me rich connections to others who's passion is Nursing Professional Development and wanting to share that passion with the ANPD members at large. Look for opportunities to join any of the ANPD committees on their website to expand your networking and educational opportunities! If you came to Orlando, I hope to see you again in Phoenix. If you didn't take part in Orlando, I urge you to consider Phoenix, you will not be disappointed! See you in Phoenix!
3 Jennifer Fielder (Anchorage, AK): The 2018 ANPD Convention was extremely rewarding for me personally and professionally. After a delightful weekend visiting with family, my week at convention started with the 2-day pre-conference on NPD certification review. Greg Durkin is a delightful educator, sharing multiple tips of the trade throughout his presentations and course need-to-knows. He kept the review from being dry and tedious with IRL vignettes and sharing a few of the daily struggles seen in his department to exemplify best practice, and even a few not quite so best adding humor and potentially building all the learners retention during the nuts & bolts of the content for (hopefully) successful exam results. Networking throughout the week was simply amazing, providing additional support and shared stories of what is working (or lessons-learned) from colleagues across the nation, and then some. I brought back new insight and strategies in how to continue to build our program even more, while having fresh insights and new tricks to share with the staffing educators throughout our enterprise, plus added vision from those who have successfully implemented interprofessional programs. The poster presentations provided even more take-away s of shared knowledge with inspiration to dig a little deeper in providing increased quality and value in what we do including the references for prompting the digging. My favorite bits discovered were tools shared in more than a few of the sessions to show not only return on investment for all the work involved, but also how to find the benchmarking to prove value on investment, and thereby prove to the financial experts the advantage of continued, and potentially increased support of professional development from within. One surprise is the free app, which is a continued resource to review sessions where my notes were shoddy, or to review sessions unable to attend, plus ALL the posters are included. Did I mention the posters? I am so looking forward to next year s event especially as it will be April in Arizona, not Florida in July where this adapted Alaskan nearly lost the battle with melting: the struggle was real, folks and enough on the weather. Megan Hamilton (Missoula, MT): I feel very fortunate to be a part of the Council on Professional Development and to have been given the opportunity to attend the ANPD conference for the first time. Attending a conference with over 1300 passionate nursing educators from around the country is an incredible experience. Networking and sharing ideas with other educators always stimulates the creative juices to flow. The educational sessions covered a variety of topics that impact our practice as professional development educators/specialists. A few of the topics included challenges and solutions to onboarding and orienting nurses to the role of professional development, nurse residency programs, and creative adult learning strategies. There many presentations that were of particular interest. One was on reenergizing the experienced bedside nurse education. This presentation shared creative teaching strategies and activities to meet the unique needs of the more experienced nurses and those practicing at a competent level. The power of reflective practice challenged us to include critical reflection and ways to promote opportunities for learner insight as we teach. Our own colleagues from Billings presented a very engaging topic on communication nightmares for new graduate residency. They delved into the tangle of communication nightmares, dreaded situations, and other highly critical, yet highly uncomfortable conversations that occur as a part of being a nurse. It was a very well put together and engaging presentation that stimulated even better conversation following their presentation. If you ever have the opportunity to attend ANPD or other professional development conference you will not be disappointed.
