3 CONFERENCE SCHEDULE Thursday, February 23, :30 9 a.m. Registration 8 8:45 a.m. Early Bird Session Maximizing Injury Prevention through Ergonomics Dr. Adam Calonder Although OSHA s view on an injury becoming recordable is to collect data and not to penalize, as safety personnel and employers the impact of a recordable injury is viewed much differently. Recordable injuries can have a significant impact on your organization. Injury prevention and workplace safety is a team approach. There is not a perfect recipe that will work for every organization. The key is identifying what your organization needs. Increasing your organization s ergonomic skill set, understanding OSHA s ever changing interpretations of what makes an injury recordable and knowing when additional expertise will provide value and will drive your organization s injuries down. This session will provide perspective from a safety manager and ergonomic specialist on maximizing injury prevention. 9-9:10 a.m. Welcome/Opening Remarks Mick Starcevich, President, Kirkwood Community College 9:10-10:30 a.m. Keynote Speaker What the Most Successful Safety Leaders Do Differently Garrison Wynn As a safety leader, are you personally influential? Do you create a culture of safety? When your employees are engaged they feel value and can connect their job duties to the overall impact of the organization. Studies have determined that 9 of 10 employees who feel rewarded and cared for see safety as a top priority whereas that number is substantially lower for those who are disengaged. Presentation topics will include: what you can do to personally create an environment of safety; how to build trust quickly; and why people look out for one another. 10:30-10:45 a.m. Break 10:45-11:45 a.m. Breakout Sessions Accident Investigation to Prevent Future Accidents Kristymarie Shipley This session is intended to provide information regarding what to expect once a workplace accident has happened, what to do to protect your interests, and the implications of being named as a defendant in a lawsuit. The presentation will discuss OSHA investigations, civil litigation, and help workers identify how to limit their exposure after an accident happens and how to prevent similar accidents from happening in the future East Central Iowa Safety and Health Conference 1

5 CONFERENCE SCHEDULE (A.M. Breakout Sessions Continued) Recognizing the Importance of Mental Health with Safety Dr. Celina Peerman While much of our attention goes to physical health, we have a growing interest for recognizing the importance of mental health at work. It remains a critical topic, linked to safety, yet one that is very hard to discuss and manage effectively given constraints in our environment. This train-the-trainer session will give fact sheets, tips and approaches to tackling these conversations with your supervisory team. Educating front line supervisors is critical to dispelling myths and helping employees be as productive and as safe as possible before or after an accident. Active Shooter Response Updated Lt. Charles Fields One of our most popular breakout sessions from past safety conferences, we have asked Lt. Fields to speak again on the three basic principles in the event of an incident: escape, evade and engage. Lt. Fields has updated his material to provide more information on recognizing essential factors in creating and conducting active shooter training, identifying resources to help companies examine risk and opportunity for training, and examining policy requirements in pre-situation and post situation examples. Communicating Safety Sarah Freiburger Safety is all about communication. If you are not an effective communicator then your safety message can be lost. We will discuss the importance of effective verbal and non-verbal communication. What can a person s verbal and non-verbal cues can tell you about their current state of mind? Learn how different personalities can affect a conversation whether it be in a safety meeting or an accident investigation, all wrapping into the important role that communication plays in teamwork and working safely. OSHA Standards Update and Iowa Worker Safety Mike Whitmore Join Mike as he discusses the latest on the currently released and enforced standards. OSHA s Final Rule to Protect Workers from Exposure to Respirable Crystalline Silica will be highlighted. Mike will also present the latest safety numbers affecting Iowa workers. This session will motivate you as a safety professional to get those numbers reduced. HR Best Practices Cari Lamb As a safety professional, you already know how challenging your job can be. Add bits and pieces of human resources to your already difficult job, and you have a whole other set of responsibilities. Join us for HR Best Practices and we will discuss legal issues, employee relations, how to find (and keep!) valuable employees, and ideas and techniques for building employee productivity. We will also discuss how safety and HR go hand in hand East Central Iowa Safety and Health Conference 3
6 (A.M. Breakout Sessions Continued) Hand and Power Tool Safety: This Ain t Your Granddaddy s Grinder! Sandra Jordon Advances in the tool industry over the last decade have also advanced the types of hazards our workers face today while using the very equipment that is supposed to make their jobs easier. You will discover how to spot the hazards of hand and power tool safety on today s work sites. You will also develop a basic understanding of the applicable OSHA regulations that pertain to hand and power tool safety for General Industry and Construction. Procedures for inspecting, tagging, repairing, and safely operating hand and power tools will also be examined. In addition, ideas for creating a drop-free work zone will be discussed, and what the world of safety has to offer those who want them. 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Lunch/Vendors 4 K irk wood Continuing Education w w w. 9 CONFERENCE SCHEDULE (P.M. Breakout Sessions Continued) Supervisor Safety Leadership Kevan Bakewell A commitment to safety should not be a priority, but a value that shapes decision-making all the time, at every level. Supervisors and frontline managers play a vital role in achieving and maintaining safety standards in the workplace. They are key advocates in promoting a culture in which safety is a priority and workplace injuries are not acceptable. This breakout will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to meet legislative requirements, ensure a safe workplace and implement or monitor company Environmental, Safety and Safety (ESH) policies, procedures and programs. 1:45-2 p.m. Break 2-3 p.m. Breakout Sessions Part 2: Dangers of Substance Abuse in the Workplace Detecting and Testing for Abuse Curt Wheeler and Sheryl Phelps This is a two-part breakout session with the first part focused on the recognition of signs and symptoms of use. It all starts with a welding safety program that includes a hot work permit system and job hazard assessment, suitable housekeeping, proper PPE, functional equipment and executing the plan correctly. Join David in discussing these subjects and more when it comes to keeping welding safe. Performing Safety Audits to Gauge Your Safety Program Kirk Dighton We all do safety audits on our employees. Why? OSHA standards? Incident/accident driven? What is the impact to the company? And how do I sell the process to the safety team? Results of your audits, now what do I do with them? Join in the discussion to help gauge your safety program using the audit process. 3:15-4 p.m. Closing Keynote/Remarks Becoming a Benchmark: A Case Study in Safety Performance Transformation Justin Ganschow The journey to safety culture excellence is long and fraught with challenges (most of which are individual people). But resistance to change and the difficulties people have adjusting their beliefs and behaviors are normal, natural and to be expected. That s because sustainable culture change involves shifting organizational norms that have been established and reinforced over time. Justin s career at Caterpillar began with improving EHS programs and processes within their own facilities and then pioneering the Zero-Incident Performance (ZIP ) Process in multiple divisions. Justin is a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager and Certified Safety Professional. Medical Causation Is it Work Related? Dr. Jeffery Westpheling Learn about medical causation in regard to work injuries from an occupational medicine physician. 3-3:15 p.m. Break 8 Kirkwood Continuing Education
