2 Executive Message Dear Neighbors, During 2005 Columbia Hospital once again proved it was a year of tremendous achievement for our patients and the community. For a second year in a row, hospital employees and doctors activated their hurricane disaster plan when Hurricane Wilma began its path across the state of Florida. Despite its surprisingly strong winds and rainfall, Columbia Hospital remained fully operational and provided exceptional care to the community as residents dealt with extensive power outages and highways with dangerous intersections. Columbia Hospital s focus on improved patient care and safety continued in 2005 with the implementation of an innovative and state-of-the-art bar coding technology designed to prevent medication errors. The new system, called emar (Electronic Medication Administration Record), scans a special barcoded armband on each patient that reads the patient s current drug history, including allergies and side effects. This data is entered into the hospital s computer system which then ensures that the correctly identified patient receives the correct medication at the correct time. Our Emergency Room implemented a five-level triage system to ensure that patients are seen according to their degree of emergent need. In early 2005 the hospital opened its new Sleep Disorders Center. Located in the Columbia Medical Plaza, the Center offers treatment and hope to hundreds of patients suffering from potentially fatal sleep disorders. The hospital s state-of-the art Radiology Department introduced a new, non-invasive imaging advance in the detection of breast cancer. The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the breast allows the physician to characterize or spot lesions not picked up by a mammogram. Also, to further accommodate our patients busy schedules the Radiology Department extended its hours to include Saturday morning. In 2005 Columbia Hospital donated office space to two nonprofit organizations: the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the Southeast Chapter of the Alzheimer s Association. By eliminating the cost of rent, these nonprofit organizations are able to provide even more services to those in need. Finally, we are very proud to announce that for the third consecutive year Columbia Hospital was recognized for its participation in the Palm Beach County School District s Partner in Education program by earning the prestigious Gold Medal Award. Also, the hospital was inducted on the School District s Wall of Fame in recognition of its outstanding support of various educational programs at Palm Beach Lakes High School and Indian Ridge School. On a statewide level the hospital was awarded the Friends of Education Award, and our very own Sharon Tarlow, Coordinator for Educational Services, received the state s Award of Excellence for Corporate Mentoring. While these awards and accolades are most appreciated, all of us at Columbia Hospital remain 100% committed to our mission of providing quality, compassionate, and cost-effective health care and being responsive to the needs of our patients, physicians, and community. Sincerely, Valerie A. Jackson Chief Executive Officer Palm Beach Lakes Community High School is certainly enriched by the hundreds of volunteer hours that many of the employees of the hospital donate to assist in tutoring our students throughout the school year. Nathan Collins Principal of Palm Beach Lakes Community High School and Member of Columbia Hospital s Board of Trustees COLUMBIA HOSPITAL BOARD OF TRUSTEES Standing l-r: Dennis Hanney, D.O., Rafael F. Seminario, M.D., Laura Corry, David Stern, D.O., Daniel Higgins, M.D., Brenda Logan, and Mark Moser, M.D. Seated l-r: Delsa Bush, Valerie Jackson, James Farrell, Esq., and Nathan Collins, Jr.
3 Supporting Our Community: Locally, Nationally, and Abroad Thanks to the generosity of Columbia Hospital and the efforts of two physicians wanting to give back to those in need, a hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, received three containers loaded with over $3.5 million worth of modern medical equipment in October Dr. Wilhelm Larsen, a Haitian native and retired oncologist, and Dr. Albert LaTorra, a semi-retired general surgeon, paid the shipping expenses themselves and are in the process of establishing the LaTorra-Larsen Medical Foundation for future fundraising projects. Among the first priorities of donated funds will be to build a lead-lined room to accommodate the X-ray machine and install electrical outlets for the electric hospital beds. The two doctors have even bigger dreams than outfitting the hospital. They want to build a medical school, a nursing school, a dental school, and medical clinics in rural villages. In the meantime, the two doctors are planning another trip and hope to renew their contacts with governmental officials and others in the country to help them reach their goals. Among the over $3.5 million worth of donated equipment are view boxes to read X-ray films. Spearheading the Haitian hospital project are Dr. Albert LaTorra (standing) and Dr. Wilhelm Larsen. We are delighted and most grateful to Columbia Hospital for their generous donation of office space which helps us to continue our mission to fight breast cancer through research, education, screening and treatment. Deborah Jaffe President of the South Florida Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Columbia Hospital had a large team at the annual Komen Race for the Cure. Columbia Hospital employees donated $9,000 to the HCA Hope Fund for their colleagues in New Orleans affected by Hurricane Katrina. Valerie Jackson, CEO of Columbia Hospital, with Sharon Tarlow, Coordinator for Educational Services, accept the statewide Friends of Education Award in recognition of the hospital s support of educational programs at Palm Beach Lakes High School and Indian Ridge School. The Hospital was also awarded the Gold Medal Award for its participation in the Palm Beach County School District s Partner in Education Program.
4 Community Support Each year charitable organizations in our community benefit from the hundreds of hours that Columbia Hospital employees and medical staff donate.
