2 ASK THE ADVENTIST HEALTH EXPERTS What are the keys to a healthy lifestyle? The cardiologist says: Focus on fiber One key to protecting your heart: Choose healthy foods. Half of your plate should be vegetables and fruits, and you should eat more whole grains (like wholegrain flour, brown rice and oatmeal) than refined (like white rice and white bread). The family practitioner says: Get screened Screening may help find diseases early, when they re easier to fight. Work with your doctor to decide what tests are right for you depending on your age, gender and risk factors. Some common tests check for: whigh cholesterol. whigh blood pressure. wsome types of cancer. Also: You can find recommended screenings from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services at The orthopedic surgeon says: Move more Regular exercise strengthens muscles and bones, improves mood and sleep, and helps control weight. The best exercise program has aerobic, flexibility and resistance training and provides at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity weekly. The internist says: Use meds wisely Know when, how and for how long you need to take medications. It s important to take them exactly as directed. For example, stopping antibiotics too soon or taking them incorrectly can actually make germs stronger. Another tip: Make sure your doctor knows about all medicines you re taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements. Doctor right. To find a physician through Adventist Health Medical Group who can help you connect with a healthy lifestyle, call or visit
3 In the best hands possible WHEN it was time for Cindy Adams* to determine the best hospital for her mom s surgery, she wanted her cherished 76-year-old mother to be in the hands of a highly skilled surgeon and outstanding nursing team. She wanted a hospital that would treat her mom like a treasure and prevent her from acquiring any complications. Cindy researched all her options and learned that HealthGrades, the nation s most trusted source of health care provider information, named Adventist Medical Center in the top 5 percent in the nation for patient safety. In other words, if all hospitals in the country performed at this level, an estimated 254,000 patient safety incidents and 56,367 deaths among Medicare patients could have been avoided. The fact that Adventist Medical Center was on the list of safest hospitals convinced Cindy that her mom would receive quality care. Today, Cindy s mom is back to enjoying life with the grandkids.
