Regions Hospital, the North Dakota Safety Council, Simulation in Motion, ALS & BLS tracks, along with a variety of new and valuable training opportunities provide so many reasons to attend this event. Care, Chest Pain from Cardiovascular Disease Karen Manor & Jenny Rech, Regions Hospital *CEUs to be determined - check ndemsa.org for updates* Explore in depth investigation into prehospital cardiology. Relate chest pain and presenting symptoms to various cardiovascular disease processes. Recognize and manage cardiac arrest and learn how to manage the post arrest state for patients of all ages. The American Heart Association 2015 guideline updates is included. Discuss the latest and greatest technology that can be used in cardiovascular resuscitation in the adult and pediatric population. 2

Discuss current treatment strategies and time frames for this patient population. Incident Command for Gas/Oil Emergencies Ben Badon, Hess Corporation This course is an examination of basic incident command systems with special emphasis on unified command structure. Discussion about collaboration of response activities between the public agencies and the private sector will occur. 9:00am - 9:50am Drilling Rig Safety Ben Badon, Hess Corporation This is an instructor-led information session that discusses basic safety related concerns of a typical drilling rig in relation to emergency services. The session will review a basic drilling rig lay-out, unique hazardous scenarios, and discuss appropriate response techniques. Pediatric Cardiac Rate Disturbance Karen Manor, Regions Hospital Pediatric rhythms can be tricky to figure out. Explore a simplified way to recognize and treat dysrhythmias. Review changes in the American Heart Association 2015 guideline update in managing these rhythms. Joint Opening Session and Welcome by Hess & NDEMSA 10:00am - 11:50pm Attendees will be split into two groups. Each group will rotate between the SIM Truck Challenge + The Role of EMS in Sepsis session, and the Workplace Violence and Active Shooter session. Each session will be one hour long - totaling two hours. First Responder Response Protocols for Workplace Violence and Active Shooter Situations Don Moseman, North Dakota Safety Council This session will cover national best practices for first responders when answering calls to workplace violence or active shooter situations. Discussed will be U.S. Department of Homeland Security recommendations along with suggestions from leading law enforcement agencies across the U.S. for safety of Firefighters and EMT s. SIM Truck Challenge NCCR 0.5 Hours For 30 minutes, the SIM Truck competition will include 10-minute scenarios and participants will be judged on teamwork, patient outcome and communication. + The Role of EMS in Sepsis Ken Reed, Rugby EMS NCCR 0.5 Hours For 30 minutes, learn how Sepsis accounts for a significant number of deaths annually and is a disease process that if detected early, can result in improved outcomes for sepsis and in the initial management of the sepsis patient. This presentation will review the pathophysiology and the stages of sepsis. We will discuss current research on sepsis detection and early treatments. 12:00pm - 1:00pm Lunch Thank you sponsors! The CDC has a method that is recommended to be used. We will look at this method and discuss the difference between 2 different approaches to sort the victims commonly used. We will compare SALT with START, in a simulated multiple casualty scenario. Landing Zone Safety & Communications Ashley Kann, Sanford AirMed This course includes classroom training followed by an outdoor hands-on scenario training with a Sanford AirMed helicopter. 2:00pm - 2:50pm Responding to Pipeline Emergencies Ryan Nelson, Enbridge Overview of pipeline operations, both gas and liquids, with a focus on hazards and response scenarios. Ventilation vs Oxygenation: What is the difference? Ron Lawler, FM Ambulance We will discuss how these differ and how dynamic capnography can help you assess and treat these issues. Assisted Ventilation Tyler Kientopf, Sanford Health & Ashley Kann, Sanford AirMed (BLS) This course will focus on pathophysiology of ventilation and its effects on cardiac output. We will emphasize the practical application of proper patient positioning, adjunct insertion, and applying different techniques of ventilating patients in respiratory distress and failure. 3:00pm - 3:50pm VADs and Tourniquets - What Every EMT Needs to Know Ken Reed, Rugby EMS Cardiac Arrest NCCR 0.5 Hours Tourniquets NCCR 0.5 Hours In this session, we will discuss the function of ventricular assist devices (VAD) assessment and care of patients who have VADs. We will also discuss the benefits vs. the risks of tourniquet application and demonstrate the rapid use of a tourniquet in the presence of significant hemorrhage. 3:00pm - 4:50pm Toxic Gasses: The Unseen Danger Dustin Austin, North Dakota Safety Council LCCR 2 Hours When you re called to respond to a compromised site, how do you know what deadly gas is lurking? This course will help you recognize the signs and symptoms of exposure, methods to detect, how to control it and emergency procedures to follow. 4:00pm - 4:50pm Endocrine - Sugar, Sugar, Sugar Ron Lawler, FM Ambulance Diabetes is one of the most prevalent diseases in this area and the country. This session will discuss how it affects the patient, how to find it and what to do about it. Waves, Lines and Fakers - 12 Lead Tools Tom Dobrizinski, Sanford Health 12-lead acquisition and interpretation has become an integral part of EMS. Looking for STEMIs has been the focus, but what else is there out there? In this session we will review basic 12-lead interpretation as well as look at some STEMI imposters. We will also go over resources you can use to sharpen your 12-lead skills. *All times are Mountain Time.

5 SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, :30am - 8:00am Registration & Check-In 8:00am - 8:50am Pain Management - Fixing What the Patient Really Cares About Ken Reed, Rugby EMS In this session we will discuss the assessment, indications and contraindications of pain management. We will examine both pharmacological and non-pharmacologic interventions for pain management. We will also discuss patient monitoring and documentation before and after analgesic administration. Special Health Care Ron Lawler, FM Ambulance (BLS) Identification, assessment and treatment of patients with special healthcare needs. This will include discussion of the special equipment they may have at home. 9:00am - 9:50am Crew Management - Teamwork Tom Dobrzynski, Sanford Health Medical errors are the 3rd leading cause of deaths in the US. One tool EMS can use to combat this is CRM (Crew Resource Management). In this session learn about CRM and some practical applications you can bring back to your service. Oxygenation Tyler Kientopf, Sanford Health (BLS) In this course, we will review physiology of oxygen transport and metabolism as well as discuss oxygen toxicity and the consequent effects on the body. 10:00am - 10:50am Medication Delivery - New Drugs & New Methods Ken Reed, Rugby EMS In this session we will discuss why intramuscular (IM) administration is superior to the subcutaneous (SQ) route and compare and contrast the delivery of medication with a nasal atomizer vs. other routes of administration. We will also look at medications that are new to prehospital care. Peanut butter cookies anyone? Tom Dobrizinski, Sanford Health (BLS) For some this is a delicious treat, while others it may be a deadly encounter. Learn about the bodies reaction to foreign bodies and how we can help mitigate that response. 11:00am - 11:50am PTSD Kelli Sears, Division of Emergency Medical Systems at the ND Department of Health Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an evolving trend in EMS. Suicide rates are increasing in EMS personnel. The psychological effects on EMS workers and family is progressing daily. 12:00pm - 12:45pm Lunch 12:45pm - 1:00pm NDEMSA SW Region Meeting 1:00pm - 2:50pm Quality Improvement Dr. Jeffrey Sather, Trinity Health LCCR 2 Hours Dr. Sather intends to overview the quality improvement process and describe the current pilot project that is taking place in the northwest region explaining the process, challenges, and triumphs. Then, working with the audience, discuss steps in developing a SW regional quality program. 3:00pm - 3:50pm Concussions/Head Injuries Dr. Kuylen, REMSA/Sanford Health In this course, Dr. Kuylen will review various head injuries as well as concussion education, treatment and management. 4:00pm - 4:50pm Alcoholism Art Wanner This session will bring awareness to Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) specifically surrounding military veterans. We will review how veterans may turn to alcohol or drugs to cope, ramifications of drinking and driving, information about treatments, and organizations available to refer patients to. 5

6 6 GRANT OPPORTUNITIES ND DOH Continuing Education Grant As in years past, ND EMSA Members who are affiliated with an ambulance squad (Type 1 registration) can be reimbursed through the ND DOH Continuing Education Grant. ($60 per 8-hour day completed) For questions, call ND DEMS at (701) Oil & Gas Track Grant Thanks to special grant funding from Hess Corporation, those involved in law enforcement, fire rescue, or emergency management (Type 3 registration) can receive reimbursement of $80 for attending the Saturday oil and gas track. Registration fees other than Saturday are not covered under this grant. Upon verification of attendance, qualifying registrants will be mailed a check at the address used during registration. For questions, call the NDSC at (800) CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS North Dakota Division of Emergency Medical Systems An application has been sent to the DEMS for course approval for CEUs. Attendees may receive up to 4 CEU hours Friday, 8 hours Saturday and 8 hours Sunday. An application has also been made for the eligibility of the conference grant for the Southwest Conference. Certificates will be awarded at the conclusion of each session. Go to Southwest-Conference for any CEU updates. ND POST Board The ND POST Board has approved ALL courses for law enforcement CEUs. To receive credit, you must sign in at the registration desk and on each class roster. BOOK YOUR HOTEL!
