37 Emergency Department Information The 20 bed Emergency Department provides services to approximately 33,000 people per year. CTAS 1 (Resuscitation) 0.5% CTAS 2 (Emergent) 5% CTAS 3 (Urgent) 32.5% CTAS 4 (Semi-Urgent) 50.5% CTAS 5 (Non-urgent) 11.5% Age Demographics: 0-5 years 10.5% 6-16 years 13% years 6.5% years 26% years 25.5% years 14% 80+ years 4.5% We have a 7% admission rate from the Emergency Department
38 Emergency Department Rooms We have a large two bed trauma room, both with central monitoring Critical Care Suite has four beds all with central monitoring STACU (Short Term Acute Care Unit) has seven beds, including one negative pressure HEPA filtration infectious disease isolation room three general exam rooms one procedure room one Eye / ENT room one Gynecology examination room, with negative air pressure and HEPA filtration and so can double as a second infectious disease isolation room. One secure seclusion room for aggitated psychiatric patients Two family rooms with comfortable seating, phone, and TV Physician office Two call rooms -- one for physicians, one for learners Social worker s office Kitchen / staff room
39 ED Information (Cont d) REMUNERATION: Modified fee-for-service mixture of hourly stipend plus percentage of fee-for-service billings Separate fee for service for third party services (WCB, RCMP, etc) PHYSICIAN WORKLOAD: Funding for 38 hours physician coverage per day, currently split into 4 shifts of 8, 9, 9, and 12 hours long FTE is 15 shifts per month with the possibility of working up to 17 at the physicians discretion (33-38 hours/week) WE ALSO HAVE: Emergency Department Echosonography (EDE) 2 Social Workers on Emergency Staff who provide 24/7 social work and crisis response services. 27 Registered nursing staff who all have CTAS, TNCC, PALS, ACLS

41 Specialist Back-up ON SITE: 4 internists 3 general surgeons 2 ENT surgeons (one more in Charlottetown) 3 OBGYN 3 pediatricians 3 psychiatrists 4 anaesthesiologists Radiologist on site Mon Fri OFF SITE: Ortho, plastics, ophthalmology, urology, after hours radiology covered from Charlottetown (45 min by land) Neurosurgery, nephrology, neurology, cardiac surgery covered from Moncton, Saint John, or Halifax (transfer by land or air)
42 ED Information (con td) ADMISSIONS: Admission decision by ER doc, admitted to family doctor no need to try and sell admissions to specialty services 102 bed hospital with psychiatry/addictions, medical, surgical, and peds/maternal child care wards, as well as a 10 bed ICU/IMCU DEPARTMENT FLOW: There are no hallway stretchers in our ED There are occasionally admitted patients held in ED due to lack of beds, but rarely more than 2-3. If it starts to seriously affect patient care there is a mechanism in place ( Code 777 ) which calls in the medical director to attempt to find a solution.
