5 About This Publication Purpose This manual is intended to guide those who are engaged in precepting neonatal nurse practitioners (NNPs). It discusses current theories and published evidence on the teaching and learning experience and offers practical examples and tools that will enhance the quality of preceptorships for both preceptor and preceptee. Intended Audience This publication is intended for experienced NNPs who function in the role of preceptor. There are no special prerequisites other than being an experienced NNP who functions in the role of preceptor. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this activity, learners will be better able to 1. discuss theories of adult learning and their application to precepting the NNP in the clinical setting 2. compare and contrast models of NNP practice 3. identify barriers to role transition and strategies to overcome these barriers 4. describe the preceptor s role and compare the preceptor s role to the learner s and manager s role 5. identify components of clinical supervision in the acute care setting 6. discuss the concepts of diversity awareness and cultural competence and ways to implement these into precepting 7. describe an organized approach to assist the learner who is experiencing problems transitioning into the advanced practice role.
