1 Format Time to Complete Released Expires Online Activity 1 hour May 25, 2015 May 24, 2016 Maximum Credits 1.0 / AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) TM Sponsored by: Commercial Supporter This activity is supported by an educational grant from Xoft, a subsidiary of icad, Inc.. Program Description Radiation therapy has been widely used to help reduce the recurrence of breast cancer and improve survival. Newer technologies such as electronic brachytherapy reduce the need for intraoperative shielding and improve safety for patients and providers. Intra-operative radiotherapy (IORT) as a treatment for breast cancer is a relatively new technique that is designed to be an adjunct or replacement for whole breast external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) in selected women suitable for breast-conserving therapy. Targeted intra-operative radiotherapy (IORT), which uses energy sources generated from a portable device within the operating room immediately after the breast tumor (and surrounding margin of healthy tissue) has been removed, greatly reduces the number of treatments required. Improvements in patient comfort and safety, as well as a potential reduction in costs, have been achieved. The delivery of single fraction radiotherapy directly to the tumor bed at the time of surgery, also allows the capability of adding EBRT at a later date. This CME accredited webinar series entitled, Radiotherapy for Breast Cancer: Advances and Options-A Case-Based CME Accredited Webinar Series, will focus on the latest data on effectiveness, appropriateness of IORT in the treatment of breast cancer as well as the technology and physics related to the procedure. Suggestions will be made for building an effective treatment team. An innovative tumor board format will be incorporated during the series to engender further thought and debate. A nationally-recognized faculty has been brought together, and will discuss IORT from the perspectives of the surgeon and the radiation oncologist. The potential advantages of IORT, as well as the latest data on its use, will be described. Newer methods of delivering high dose target
2 limited radiation therapy will be evaluated, and recommendations will be made for appropriate patient selection. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with the faculty in a Q&A session immediately following the live presentations. Attendees may register for any number of individual live interactive webinars. Each of the webinars will then be available online to give the widest group of learners access to this important series, as well as the ability to earn CME credit. Intended Audience Surgeons, Radiation Oncologists, Medical Oncologists, Radiation Therapists and other medical professionals involved in the treatment of breast cancer. Educational Objectives After taking part in this educational activity, participants should be better able to: Assess the appropriate usage of IORT in the treatment of breast cancer Identify the modalities available for IORT Identify potential improvements in patient comfort, safety and cost of various modalities of IORT Discuss the possible advantages of electronic brachytherapy Examine potential advances in the treatment of breast cancer Accreditor Disclosure of Conflicts of Interest The Institute for Medical Education (IME) adheres to all IMQ/CMA/ACCME Essential Areas, Standards and Policies.
