Staff in Ward 4 are here to help you and can offer advice to both patients and their relatives. Our staff members: Charge Nurse Consultant Psychiatrist (Covering Ardrossan, West Kilbride, Skelmorlie and Largs) Consultant Psychiatrist (Covering Kilmarnock) Consultant Psychiatrist (Covering Irvine, Kilwinning, Garnock Valley, Saltcoats and Stevenston) Andrea Fitzpatrick Dr J Barber Dr S McNulty Dr D Gallagher If you have any problems which you feel need to be addressed by someone senior, the Team Leader for the ward is: Margaret Rooney Clinical Nurse Manager 3
Welcome Ward 4 is a 15-bed acute admission and assessment ward for people aged over 65. The ward is for both men and women. However, it has separate toilet and sleeping facilities. A team of people including nursing, medical and paramedic staff provide care for our patients and will help in their recovery or rehabilitation to allow them to return to the community. This may be to their own home, a residential setting or a nursing home. Our staff work with social work staff. Location The ward is in the grounds of Ayrshire Central Hospital in Irvine. It provides access to medical, nursing, occupational therapy, podiatry, dental and dietetic departments. Your nurse Ward 4 uses the named nurse system. When your relative or friend is admitted we will let you know the name of their named nurse and give you an information leaflet about this system. Information for carers Please ask if you need more information. We have a large amount of information available in the ward about different types of illness and disabilities please ask if you need this. 4
Toiletries Patients relatives must provide these. Any sharp instruments such as scissors or razors should not be left with the patient. Please give these items to the nurse in charge. Visiting Visiting time is between 2pm and 8pm with the exception of protected meal times which are: Breakfast - 8am to 9am Lunch - 12 noon to 1pm Dinner - 5pm to 6pm If for any reason you are unable to visit during our specified visiting hours, please speak to the nurse in charge, who will try to accommodate you at a mutually suitable time. Protected group time Protected group time is held from Monday to Friday from 10.30am to 12 noon to allow us to carry out therapeutic engagement and assessments. During this time the nursing staff may be unable to answer the ward telephone. Should this happen please call back later. 5
Clothing We encourage our patients to wear their normal daytime clothing during the day. Please make sure patients bring at least seven sets of clothing and nightwear as we do not keep alternative clothing in the ward. Laundry Patients are encouraged to do their own laundry with the exception of soiled garments and woollens, which should be washed at home. Valuables We would prefer if jewellery could be left at home. NHS Ayrshire & Arran is unable to take responsibility for items of personal property kept by our patients. You should tell a staff member about any items brought in after admission for example, as a present. You should also tell a staff member if you are taking any jewellery away with you. Questions If you have any questions about your relative s care, please ask their named nurse. However, if the named nurse is not available then the nurse in charge will help you. 6
Suggestions You can make any suggestions to the nurse in charge. Locked door The ward cares for a group of patients who are vulnerable and at-risk. Therefore at times our doors are kept locked for their safety. Complaints Please speak with the nurse in charge about any complaints you may have. We can also help you complete a complaint form if you wish.
