Welcome to Pine Ward Your care and treatment We hope you find the information in this pack useful during your stay on Pine Ward. You may not find all the answers to the questions you have, so please ask a member of staff if there is anything else you would like to know. We provide a safe and supportive environment to help you get better and return to the community, where you will continue your recovery journey. We have 24 beds for adults aged 18-65, including people with learning disabilities and occasionally adolescents aged Physical health checks Before you arrive on the Pine Ward, a nurse will talk to you about your lifestyle and do a physical health check with you so that we can understand if you have any physical health problems. Later on, a doctor will physically examine you and take blood and urine samples as well as carrying out an electrocardiogram - or ECG - a simple and useful test which records the rhythm and electrical activity of your heart. We will give you a Healthy Lifestyle Advice booklet and also offer a therapy programme to support you in your lifestyle choices. Your nurses You play a very important role in your wellbeing and recovery. We will allocate a primary nurse and an associate nurse when you are admitted to the ward. The primary nurse is usually the nurse who manages your admission onto the ward. They will also explain your rights to you. You will be offered regular one-to-one meetings with your primary and associate nurse during your stay. They will discuss your care plan with you and support you in developing a treatment plan that suits your specific needs. There will always be a specific nurse who is allocated to take care of your needs. Their name will be written on the board opposite the nurse s station at the start of each shift. We hold a daily Plan Your Day meeting and a weekly community meeting and encourage all patients to come to this meeting so that you know what is happening on the ward each day and we can make sure that you have everything you need. If you have any problems or concerns you can speak to a member of staff at any time.

Ward round Members of the team caring for you will meet with you every week during a ward round. They will discuss your care and treatment with you and together you will agree a plan of how best to help you. At your ward round meeting there will normally be a consultant, senior psychiatrist, ward doctor, pharmacist, occupational therapist: and nurse. Sometimes students might also be there as part of their learning process. If you would like someone to accompany you to the meeting, such as a relative, friend, carer, or an advocate, please let us know in advance. What will happen during the ward round? The day before your ward round meeting, we will tell you that you will be seen and at approximately what time. This is so that you can have plenty of time to get ready. We will introduce everyone who is at the meeting to you. During the meeting we will ask you if you are comfortable with the number of people that are there. If you are not comfortable then some of the people will be asked to wait outside. We will ask for your views and ask you to be involved in decisions about your care. We will answer any questions that you might have. What is the purpose of these meetings? To review your progress and on-going care To listen to your views and any concerns you may have related to your care To receive feedback on any ward activities you have been involved in To review your medication To review your leave arrangements To plan ahead including what sort of follow-up and care you might need after leaving hospital. Please remember that sometimes the meetings can be quite large. Medication You might be prescribed medication to help you while you are on the ward. Please ask a nurse if you would like some more information about the medication you are on. You can also talk to the ward pharmacist about your medication and any side effects that they might cause. The Choice and Medication website www. choiceandmedication.org/ cnwl/ provides information on around 20 mental health conditions and over 110 different medicines. There is a medicines helpline that can support you with medicines once you have been discharged from hospital. The helpline number is and is open Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.15pm (outside of these hours a message can be left and they will call you back). You can also contact them by medinfo.cnwl@nhs.net Your medication will be given to you at: 8am, 12pm and 6pm. Observation and engagement The nursing staff on the ward offer various ways of helping you to feel safe whilst you are here. A member of the nursing staff is allocated to check on the whereabouts and wellbeing of everyone on the ward. This is done on an hourly basis This is done with sensitivity and in a way to preserve your dignity We will do our best not to wake you when we check on you at night and apologise if you find this intrusive. However, there may be times when you are feeling vulnerable and staff assess you as needing a higher level of care. This may result in your allocated nurse spending more time with you It may range from staff checking your wellbeing more frequently (every 15 minutes) to being in arms reach of you at all times (close observations) The level of observations necessary will be discussed with you and you will have a care plan detailing how the ward staff will support you through this period.

Your health records Information about your stay here is kept on our computer system. We have a legal duty to keep your information confidential. For more information about how we use your health records you can read the leaflet Your Information that you will be given. Occupational therapy There are a number of groups that you can attend on this ward that are run by our ward occupational therapist, therapy staff, activity coordinators or nursing staff. Our therapies team offers a comprehensive treatment programme from the beginning of your recovery journey on the ward on to your return to the community. An activity coordinator or occupational therapist will contact you initially with a programme. Group work and individual sessions are offered both on the ward and at the Tamarind Day Therapy Unit. Details about the programme and the therapy team can be found in the relevant leaflets provided by the arts psychotherapy and Tamarind occupational therapy teams as well as on the therapies notice board. The activity coordinators will meet with you in the first few days of your stay and provide you with the therapy timetable and talk to you about your interests. A range of smaller activities are also available on request so please speak to a member of staff about this. We are open to new ideas or requests of what you would like to happen on the ward so please let the ward team know. You can also speak to the team about the CNWL Recovery & Wellbeing College and what it can offer you, as well as your support network (friends, family and carers). On the ward Meals Meal times are: Breakfast: 8am-8.45am Lunch: 12.30pm-1pm Dinner: 5.30pm The menu for each day is displayed in the dining room. Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements or preferences. We welcome any suggestions you have about the meals and we will do our best to act on your suggestions. Visiting times Your family, friends and/or carer(s) are welcome to visit you on Pine Ward. They can do so at the following times: Monday to Friday: 6pm to 8pm Weekends: 2pm to 8pm We want all patients and visitors to feel welcome and safe whilst on Pine Ward. Some items cannot be brought onto the ward, some of these are listed in the Restricted Items section on page 8 of this leaflet. If you are unsure whether an item is restricted or not, please ask a member of staff. All visits take place in the communal areas of the ward or in the quiet room. Visitors are not allowed in your bedroom or in any other restricted areas on the ward. Visits with children Your children are welcome to visit you while you are staying on Pine Ward. There is a family room on the unit where visits with children take place and where you will have more privacy in a pleasant environment. Please let a member of staff know if you want to use the family room so it can be booked for you. We do not allow children into the main ward areas.

Mobile phones You can keep your mobile phone, laptop and other electrical items with you. The chargers for electrical items are kept in the nursing office and staff will charge them for you when requested. Mobile phones are not allowed to be used to film, record voices or take photographs whilst you are on the ward. This is to protect the privacy and confidentiality of all our patients. Telephone There is a public pay phone that you can use on the ward. You can give this number to your family and friends for them to contact you. The patient payphone number is and the office telephone number is You will not always have access to the telephones in the nursing station so it s better to use the payphone which is operated using coins. Restricted items The following items are not allowed to be brought onto the ward. If you have any of these items with you, they can be kept safe in the nursing office or ward safe and will be returned to you when you leave the ward. Prescribed medications including ointments and creams Over the counter medicines and supplements Illicit drugs Alcohol Solvents and other toxic, hazardous substances Glass Any sharp implements including knives, scissors, razors Firearms and ammunition Lighters and matches Photographic equipment Any other items which could compromise the safety of the ward or of people on the ward. We appreciate your cooperation in keeping the ward safe for everyone. Smoking The law bans smoking in all enclosed public spaces, this includes hospital wards. There is a designated smoking area that patients are allowed to go to. The smoking area is open for the first 15 minutes of each hour between 6am and 11pm each day. Your visitors are not allowed to use the smoking area, it is for patients only. Religious and spiritual needs We can arrange for different ministers of faith and religious sects to come to the ward if they are requested. If you would like to know where the nearest place of worship is, please ask a member of staff. Laundry There is a laundry room that you can use. This room is kept locked and a member of staff will open it for you to use. Newspaper Daily newspapers are available on the ward for you to read. They can be found in the communal areas but please ask a member of staff if you can t find them. Shop round If you are not granted leave to go out, a member of the nursing team can buy things for you daily or sometimes twice daily. You can either speak to the nurse in charge or go to the daily planning meeting to request something to be bought for you. Personal property Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (the Trust responsible for this Ward) does not accept responsibility for loss or damage to your personal property of any kind, including loss of money unless it has been kept in the ward safe. We will only keep up to the value of 25 of cash on the ward, all other money will be kept by the hospital cashier. When you give money or take some money back, staff will always ask you to sign for your money. Locked doors and CCTV We make sure that people who do not have a proper reason to be on the ward can t get in. For this reason, we make sure that the doors are locked. The main entrance and the access to the female only area are monitored by CCTV cameras. There are no CCTV cameras in bedrooms or toilet areas.

Leave from the ward Escorted leave To make sure that you are as safe as possible when you leave the ward, sometimes you may need a staff escort. You will definitely need an escort when you first come onto the ward. If you are brought onto the ward under a Section of the Mental Health Act special permission from your consultant will also be needed. Leave for informal patients An informal or voluntary patient is someone who has agreed to come into hospital to receive treatment. Some informal patients may know they are vulnerable or maybe having suicidal thoughts and they may agree to have an escort with them when they go out. This can make you feel more settled and will be part of your treatment plan. All informal patients are asked to work with staff to come up with a care plan for when you leave the ward that will keep you, and other patients on the ward, safe. We will always try to provide an escort as soon as possible once you have asked for one but this may not always be possible straight away when the ward is busy. Mental Health Act If you are detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007), you will be told when you are first admitted to hospital. The Mental Health Act 1983 (amended in 2007) is the law in England and Wales that allows people with a mental disorder to be admitted to hospital, detained and treated without their consent either for their own health and safety, or for the protection of other people. You will also be given information about your rights. If you need a list of solicitors please ask a member of staff who can give this to you. You also have the right to an Independent Mental Health Advocate. Advocacy Service Advocates can help you if you are not happy with the service provided by a doctor, NHS professional or social services. They normally work for charities, so they are independent. They can help you to: Get what you are entitled to Get your point of view across Get the services that you need. Our ward has a very good advocacy service run by Voiceability. You can contact them on: Bed availability within Park Royal Mental Health Centre There are only a limited number of beds at Park Royal. Sometimes when patients are on leave and are not using the beds on the ward it is necessary for them to be used for other patients. If there is a lot of demand for the beds we occasionally have to ask patients to sleep on another ward or unit. This will only happen if your mental state is stable and you are close to being discharged. If you need to be moved temporarily to another ward, the staff will discuss this with you and support you so that your care and treatment are not disrupted. Feedback, complaints & compliments We are always pleased to hear what you think about our services. Sharing your views and experiences can help us to make improvements. If you have received good treatment or service and would like to thank the staff involved, please let us know by contacting the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS). at pals.cnwl@nhs.net or on They will ensure that your compliments are passed on to the service or individual concerned as quickly as possible. If you are unhappy with any part of the care you receive on Pine Ward please speak to the ward manager, the nurse in charge in the first instance. You can also contact PALS if you wish to make a complaint. Tell us, we re listening! Our staff want to know how they are doing. Tell us what you think at then we ll know what we have to do.
