2 Information for Patients What is the Norman Power Centre? You will now have been visited by a member of our discharge team who will have explained to you that whilst you are now medically fit there will be a period of time before we are able to move you to either your own home or to a nursing / residential home. Until then it is important that we are able to care for you in an appropriate place to help your recovery. The Trust is now able to provide an out-of-hospital facility for your ongoing rehabilitation. It is called The Norman Power Centre and it is situated just off the Hagley Road, in Ladywood, Birmingham. The Norman Power Centre (named after Canon Norman Power, a long-serving and well-respected vicar of Ladywood) was built in 2008, with en-suite single rooms, a gym and therapy facilities. The centre offers high-quality inpatient care for 32 patients and will enable us to give you the treatment and care that better reflects your needs and supports your recovery. Who will be providing my care? Care is provided 24 hours a day and the centre also provides a therapy service to support patients that may benefit from additional rehabilitation. You will be cared for at the centre by a mix of registered nurses, therapy staff and nursing assistants. You will remain under the care of your current hospital consultant, however, day-to-day medical care at the centre will be provided by a GP, who works for South Doc Services (SDS), a GP co-operative based in South Birmingham. 3 Where is The Norman Power Centre? The Norman Power Centre is located at 14 Skipton Road, Ladywood, B16 8JJ. How will I get there? West Midlands Ambulance Service will transfer patients from their current ward to the centre. The journey usually takes around 20 minutes. What should I take with me to the Norman Power Centre? Patients at the Norman Power Centre are encouraged to return to the normal life they had prior to being admitted to hospital, and to prepare for discharge home, or to nursing / residential care. Therefore we ask that patients (or their relatives where appropriate) bring a supply of day clothes - including underwear - as patients will then feel more comfortable and able to get up to go to the gym (where appropriate for their care), in addition to the lounge and dining areas. Other personal items that patients (or relatives/carers) should bring include: shower gel, shampoo, deodorant, a toothbrush, toothpaste and a hair brush. Why do I have to be transferred? Whilst you are now medically fit there will be a period of time before we are able to get you back to your own home or to a nursing / residential home. Until then, it is important that we are able to care for you in a more appropriate place to help your recovery. The Trust is now able to provide an out-of-hospital facility for your ongoing rehabilitation with access to a dedicated therapy team that will enable us to better support your recovery. 4 The Norman Power Centre will also enable the Trust to make sure our acute inpatient beds on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site are always available for very sick patients who require access to specialist hospital doctors and support services such as intensive care and theatres. Will the care provided be less than, or lower quality than I receive now? No, the care provided will always be given with your dignity, respect and comfort in mind. The centre is run by a senior sister or charge nurse, as your current ward is now, and you will remain under the care of your current hospital consultant. However, as you no longer require a hospital bed, your medical care will be provided by a GP who is a member of our clinical team and will visit the centre throughout the week. Information for Visitors When am I able to visit my loved one? Carers, relatives and friends are encouraged to support your recovery and therefore visiting times reflect this. All visitors are welcome to the centre between 12 noon and 8pm. Visitors may occasionally need to wait during visiting time for patients that may be receiving treatment from a therapist. Once at the centre, signage advises visitors where to go from the main reception, up to the ward which is located on the first floor. Lift access (via Lift 1) is available. If reaching the first floor via the stairs, the ward is the first door on your left. If reaching the first floor via the lift, the door to the ward is on your right. You will need to press the buzzer for a member of staff to release the doors. 4 PI17_1977_02 The Norman Power Centre

5 If you are asked to visit out of hours, please press the intercom at the main entrance, Staff on the ward will be able to collect you from the entrance. Patients will be able to leave the ward with their family for outings as long as staff are aware and this is recorded in the patient records. How do I get there? The Norman Power Centre is located at 14 Skipton Road, Ladywood, B16 8JJ. Public Transport The centre is well served by public transport for carers, relatives or other visitors. National Express West Midlands bus routes: 8A, 8C, 9, 10H, 80, 120, 120A, 126, 127, 128, 129, are all within a 10 minute walk of the centre. By rail, Five Ways Station is a 10 minute walk away. Car Parking There are 32 free car parking spaces for staff and visitors (including 4 disabled spaces) at the centre. Entry to the car park is via a barrier with swipe access; however visitors can press the buzzer at the barrier. Simply state the patient s name and you will be given access. The nearby Bethel Church has six parking spaces at a cost of 2 per day. There is also free parking on the nearby public road (except between 12 1pm). There is no cycle storage at the centre. However, you will be permitted to bring your bicycle into the building and reception will be able to show you where this can be stored. PI17_1977_02 The Norman Power Centre 5

6 Where can I eat? The Norman Power Centre does not have any restaurant or vending machine facilities. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are provided for patients at the centre; unfortunately we cannot provide food for visitors. Staff will of course be happy to provide drinks such as tea, coffee and water to visitors, though visitors will be required to bring their own food, or visit a shop or restaurant nearby. Volunteers As with the current care provided at QEHB, dignity team volunteers will be available on site Monday to Friday providing support around meal times and to assist with arranged activities, among other responsibilities. A welcoming volunteer will be available from Monday to Friday to support staff at the reception, and ensure relatives are able to navigate the building. A ward volunteer will also be present at the weekend. Infection control and cleanliness Maintaining a clean and safe environment is essential and should be expected across all wards of QEHB, including The Norman Power Centre. To reduce the risk of infection to both yourselves, patients and staff at the centre, if you have diarrhoea and vomiting, please do not visit the centre until 48 hours after your symptoms have passed. Please also make sure to use the hand disinfectant before you reach the ward, if handling food or patient items, and when you leave. This will help to stop the spread of any bacteria and keep us all safer. 6 PI17_1977_02 The Norman Power Centre

7 Daily cleaning services of all patient and public areas is provided, however, if you see anything of concern, please report this to the nurse or nursing assistant who will endeavour to maintain the high standards we all expect. Security A security guard is on site seven days a week, and will be based at the main entrance. All staff will treat patients, visitors and each other with dignity and respect. We ask that all visitors also treat staff, other patients and their visitors in kind. If emergency help is required, please make a member of staff aware who will contact the police, fire or ambulance services as appropriate.
