Ravenswood House Information for patients
Welcome to Ravenswood House Your name: Ward name: Ward telephone number: Patient s telephone number: Ravenswood House, Mayles Lane, Knowle, Fareham, Hampshire PO17 5NA Ravenswood Reception: Being admitted to hospital can be quite unsettling for some people. We hope this leaflet will put you at ease and answer your questions. Ravenswood House is a secure psychiatric hospital with five wards, and can have up 79 patients at any one time. Ravenswood has a strong focus on working together with people towards their recovery from mental health problems. We support people to take greater control over their care pathways. Our multi-disciplinary teams work with people to support them in setting their own goals based on their interests, skills and hopes for the future. The Recovery Approach is about supporting people to achieve a sense of wellbeing and cope with problems through the development of hope, confidence and empowerment, despite any ongoing mental health issues. We also help people work towards lowering their risk of harm to themselves and others. Being able to reduce future risk of offending is necessary in order for people to progress along their care pathway through secure services and out into the community. What will happen when I am admitted to Ravenswood House? Whether you come here from the community, prison or another hospital, you will be welcomed onto the ward by a member of staff. They will show you important places including your room, where to make a drink and the toilets. You will be introduced to your primary nurse who will be the member of staff most involved in your care. You will see a doctor very soon after you arrive. The doctor will talk about why you have been admitted to hospital and check your physical health as well. If you have any questions or if you need something, please do ask any member of staff and we ll do our best to help you.
Who s who on my multi-disciplinary team (MDT)? Your MDT is a range of professionals who will work closely with you at Ravenswood House. Here are some of them: l Consultant Psychiatrist: The Consultant is the senior medical doctor on your team and specialise in treating people with mental health problems. l Primary Nurse: Makes sure you have the correct care plans in place and undertakes your daily assessments. l Junior Doctor(s): This is a trainee or newly qualified doctor who is a specialist in psychiatry and works with your Consultant Psychiatrist. l Associate Nurse: They support your Primary nurse and can also provide cover for your Primary nurse when needed. l Health Care Support Worker: They work under the supervision of the Primary Nurse and other registered nurses to assist in the direct delivery of your care. l Occupational Therapist: They help you to learn new skills and keep the abilities you already have to do everyday things. l Psychologist: They provide talking therapies to help you understand and manage things better. l Social Worker: Your Social Worker will work closely with you, your family, carers and all others involved in your treatment, care and recovery. l Clinical Ward Manager: The senior nurse in charge of the ward. l Pharmacist: They will attend Progress Reviews, provide 1:1 teaching and review your medication. l Ward Administrator: They provide administrative support to each ward. They contribute to the effective running of the wards and organise CPA Case Conferences for each service user. l CMHT Care Coordinator: Co-ordinates and manages your care pathway with you and your carers. They will also be involved in your care once you are discharged.
Others who may be involved in your care Security They ensure the security and safety needed for a medium secure unit is provided for service users, staff and visitors at all times. Reception Reception is manned seven days a week, 6.30am 10.00pm. The reception is the hub of the unit including escorting some visitors around Ravenswood. Who should I speak to if I need help with something? You should speak to your Primary or Associate nurse. They will be able to help you. Your recovery at Ravenswood House Occupational Therapy (OT) Your OT will talk to you to find out your strengths and if there are any everyday things you find difficult to do. They will put a plan together with you to help you achieve your goals and build your skills. You can do lots of different things in OT. Woodwork, cooking, computing and music are just some of them. You can also study adult education in subjects like Maths and English. They also organise employment opportunities. Employment There are opportunities for part time paid and voluntary patient jobs within the unit depending on what you want to do and your levels of ability. These include car washer, gardener, workshop cleaner, librarian, shop assistant and patient representative. All the jobs available are advertised on the job board in the OT corridor. Psychological Therapies Psychological therapy involves talking about your problems to support you in your recovery and help assess your risk needs. We offer a range of individual and group sessions including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Substance Misuse and Psychotherapy. Spiritual needs We will discuss with you your spiritual needs or practices. Recovery is the key to our work with you at Ravenswood and spiritual beliefs and practices are often crucial to recovery. There is a Unity of Faith room which is available for quiet prayer or reflection. Religious needs Ravenswood has a chaplain who visits once a week, usually on a Tuesday afternoon. He is available for advice and prayer. He can also arrange for leaders of other denominations and faiths to visit you. The chaplain holds a service on a Sunday morning once a month in the Unity of Faith room. Your care and time at Ravenswood What does CPA mean? You will hear CPA quite a lot. CPA stands for Care Programme Approach. CPA is the process we use to plan and make sure you get the right treatment. Before you come to Ravenswood House, your MDT will have made some plans for your treatment when you get here. This might be medication, talking therapies or Occupational Therapy (OT). Soon after you arrive your MDT will hold a CPA meeting to plan your treatment over the next few months. This helps us to look very carefully at your problems and strengths and work out how best to help you move on. Each member of your MDT will write a report on your progress and the reports will be read at your CPA meeting. You will be invited to that meeting and will be able to see the reports in advance. You can take someone along for support, such as a friend, relative or advocate. Your CPA meeting is all about you and your treatment. We would like you to be as involved as possible and to work with us to help get your treatment right. We would like you to write a report on how you think you are doing. This will be read out at your CPA meeting and will go into your records. We will write your CPA care plan at the meeting. This will contain a list of goals that need to be looked at by you and your MDT. Your care plan will also say who your care coordinator is (it is usually your primary nurse). Your care coordinator makes sure that your care plan is being followed.
Your care plan will be reviewed every two weeks at your progress review. This helps us to make sure that we are all doing the things we said we would do at your CPA meeting. Once every four months you will have a detailed review of your care and treatment. Progress Review Meeting Every fortnight you will have a Progress Review Meeting. This meeting includes all the professionals involved with your care. At this meeting your CPA plan will be reviewed and you will be able to make short-term goals, discuss your leave and think about what you would like to achieve. Your primary nurse will help you to prepare for this meeting and will support you in writing a review of how you think the previous weeks have gone. What does being Sectioned mean? The Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007) is the law in England and Wales that allows people with a mental disorder to be admitted to hospital without their consent for the safety of either themselves or others. The act is made up of a number of different categories formally known as Sections. When you are admitted to hospital a nurse will talk to you about the Mental Health Act, the type of Section you are under and your rights. If you cannot take it all in, please ask us to go over it with you again. We can also give you some more detailed leaflets about Sections. Please ask a member of staff if you would like to see them. What is a tribunal? Tribunal is the short term used for Mental Health Review Tribunal. It decides whether or not you need to stay in hospital for treatment. You can apply for a tribunal and ask them to discharge you from hospital. Most patients get a lawyer for this - you will not have to pay for a lawyer. We can give you a list of telephone numbers of lawyers who can help you. What is an Independent Mental Health Advocate? An Independent Mental Health Advocate (IMHA) is a specialist trained to support you to get information about and understand your rights and safeguards under the Mental Health Act They will also get information to help you understand your medical treatment and the reasons for it. The role of the IMHA includes helping you exercise your rights and supporting you to participate in decisions made about your care and treatment. An IMHA may represent or speak on behalf of you and can help you to make your views known or make a complaint. A local mental health charity, Solent Mind provides an IMHA service at Ravenswood House. They have an office on the ground floor between Malcolm Faulk and Mary Graham Wards. You can contact them by patient phones on the wards or ask staff to contact them for you. Do I get to go out? During the course of your stay when things are safe enough you will be allowed short visits into the hospital grounds with an escort, and this could progress to being on your own. You might then have escorted leave and then potentially unescorted leave into the local community depending on your progress. There seem to be a lot of rules. Why is this? You have a right to live in comfort and safety and to be treated in a polite and respectful way. The staff at Ravenswood House also have that right. For this reason physical and verbal abuse of other patients and hospital staff will not be tolerated and might mean we have to notify the police. We have a lot of rules because we need to keep the hospital a safe place to live and work in. We keep details of all the hospital rules on the ward. Please ask a member of staff if you would like to see them.
What if I don t want any treatment? If you need treatment, we will discuss it with you. If you decide not to accept it, then you can be given some types of treatment, such as medication, against your will under the Mental Health Act. We try to avoid this and most patients at Ravenswood House agree to take their medication most of the time. If you are worried about your treatment, please talk to your Primary Nurse or your MDT. If you are having problems with sideeffects then don t suffer in silence. Let us know early on and we will do our best to help. What s happening on my ward? Meals Here at Ravenswood we encourage and support healthy eating and all our meals are freshly prepared on the premises. There is a shared patient and staff canteen that you will be able to visit when you are well enough, or you will have meals on your ward. On your first day please tell us if there is any food you are unable eat. Three meals are provided each day: l Breakfast: 8.00am 9.00am l Lunch: 11.45am 1.00pm l Evening meal: 5.00pm 6.00pm. Also, you can make yourself a snack or a drink on the ward, unless you are on the intensive care ward. Community meetings Each ward has its own community meetings. Depending on which ward you are on, you may have one which is held daily or weekly. During these meetings you can raise any issues about the day to day running of your ward. Your ward has a Patient Ward Representative and they will be able to support you in the community meetings. Telephone You can contact people using the payphone on your ward. If you want to have a private conversation, please ask one of the nurses to arrange this. If someone needs to speak to you they should call the ward phone first. Post You can send out and receive post during your stay. If you want to send a letter you can hand it to the ward office for posting. You can buy stamps in the League of Friends shop. If someone writes to you at Ravenswood House we will pass the letter on to you. Laundry You can wash your clothes in the laundry room on your ward. You don t have to worry about towels, sheets and bedding. We will wash them for you. What s happening in the rest of the hospital? Shop You can buy basic essentials in the League of Friends shop between 10am and 12pm on Monday to Friday. Except on a Wednesday when it is open between 2.30pm and 3.30pm. Library You can borrow books and DVDs from the patients library. It is open 3 afternoons a week (see library for opening times). Clothes shop You can buy clothes at the clothes shop which is open once to twice a week (see door for opening times). Patients bank The patients bank is open 10.00am noon Monday to Friday.
They will provide advice on claiming benefits and you can leave your money and small valuables there for safekeeping. Any cheques you wish to pay in must be made payable to Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust. Please note we cannot accept cheques made payable to you. Coffee shop The coffee shop is open on Monday and Wednesday evenings between 6:30pm and 8:30/8:45pm. It may also be open at other times for various activities. There are special events such as film nights, bingo and quizzes. Hot drinks are free and you can buy cold drinks and snacks from the vending machine there as well. There is a satellite television and various card and board games. You will have the chance to meet other patients from different wards. Can I smoke at Ravenswood House? There is no smoking permitted inside the building. You will be allowed to smoke in the courtyards and hospital grounds. There may be set times for smoking depending on which ward you are on and the time of year. Visitors Visits from your family and friends are an important part of your care and need to be approved in advance by your MDT. When you first arrive, all visits will be supervised. These may become less supervised during the course of your stay depending on how well you are. How do I express my views about the service? If you want to make a formal complaint, Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust has a complaints procedure. Your primary nurse will be happy to discuss this with you and/or provide written information on the process. l FREEPOST RSJL-JXSX-ATUE PALS and Complaints Department 5-6 Sterne Tatchbury Mount Calmore. Southampton SO40 2RZ l Phone: l Fax: l hp-tr.complaints@nhs.net l Website: Right to speak to an Independent Mental Health Advocate The IMHA Service based at Ravenswood provides independent advocates for you to speak to about your rights and care and treatment. How can I, or my friends and family, find out more about Ravenswood House? You can speak to any member of staff. If you have access to the internet you can visit the Ravenswood House website at: Your views are very important to us and we hope you will raise any comments or concerns you have with your primary nurse, ward manager or Modern Matron who should be able to sort most problems out straight away.
