Issue 1 Spring 2018 Improving the current and future health of patients Kingston Hospital has seen a rapid increase in its research activity over the last four years. This is both welcome and important, as research-active organisations provide newer, better treatments and more efficient models of care. By , the NHS Research Activity League Table showed that Kingston Hospital was the number one acute trust nationally for the increase in the number of new open studies in the last year (up 75% from 16 to 28 new trials). The hospital is currently placed ninth nationally within acute NHS trusts for its increase in patient participation (up 158% from 245 to 633), which is the largest in South London. This rapid increase in research activity was helped in part by pump priming funding in 2015 from Kingston Hospital Charity which has enabled me and colleagues to successfully bid for external funding to develop our work, increasing the number of trials and academic collaborations with which the hospital is involved. More recently, Kingston Hospital Charity jointly with Kingston University has provided the funding to support a PhD studentship for Emma Ashley who is researching the link between iron excess and liver disease. Funding provided by the charity has also allowed us to purchase a C research freezer, enabling us, for the first time, to participate in many more research studies which require this for sample collection. Participation in research has already provided access to new and innovative treatments and care for our patients. Examples of some recent hospital trials include: C-STITCH (to investigate methods for prevention of premature labour); NICE-FIT (investigating new noninvasive methods to detect colorectal cancer); PSOREAL (a commercial trial
looking at a new treatment for Psoriasis) and SAFETEXT (improving young peoples access to results and uptake of treatment in sexual health through mobile phone communication). The research team has developed a good reputation for research delivery in key metrics for commercial and noncommercial trials. However, there is a need now to work with Kingston Hospital Charity to strengthen the team - for our patients, this will mean greater access to both local and national trials which offer the potential of new and innovative methods of care, while helping to discover more about the treatment of their conditions. Our most pressing priority is to recruit a research co-ordinator for an initial three year period to increase activity in both commercial and non-commercial trials. If, like me, you are excited by the possibilities of improving the current and future health of patients, we hope you may consider making a donation. Any support you feel able to provide would be very much appreciated by me and colleagues who are actively involved in research across the hospital. You just need to complete and return the response form provided at the back of this newsletter or you can donate online at KingstonHospital/Donate.html. Thank you so much. Dr Helen Matthews Research and Development Lead and Consultant Gastroenterologist
Something to think about Gifts in wills, which are sometimes referred to as legacies or bequests, make a real and lasting difference to the care Kingston Hospital is able to provide. While larger gifts enable Kingston Hospital Charity to take on major projects, like development of the new haematology day unit in the Sir William Rous Unit, smaller ones help us to assist in other ways, including the provision of patient comforts or supporting clinical research. These gifts remain vitally important to Kingston Hospital Charity in helping the hospital, as it strives to deliver and maintain an outstanding level of care across all its services now and in the future. Remembering Kingston Hospital Charity in my will has been a simple way to demonstrate that I care about Kingston Hospital, as it has cared for me. I am so delighted with the results of my foot operation, having been in pain for years. It s so much better now and there is hardly any scarring. The care and concern shown by the staff at the time I had surgery was amazing, as it was when my mother passed away at the hospital in Elizabeth Ann Binks Roy was a real character generous, independent and a creature of habit. He did not want to be a burden on anyone. He first experienced the high standard of care provided by the nursing and clinical staff at Kingston Hospital after he had a stroke in He was particularly appreciative of the speech therapy department at the time and for the subsequent care he received from hospital staff up until his death in May last year Roy was rooted in his local community and regarded his neighbours as his friends. It was therefore entirely fitting that with no living relatives, he left the bulk of his estate to Kingston Hospital Charity so that the whole community would benefit. Ian Hughes, executor of the late Roy Dominy s estate Remembering Kingston Hospital Charity when making or updating a will is not difficult to arrange and we would be happy to provide you with any information or support you may need. If this isn t something you ve considered previously, please start to think about helping us in this way. For more information, call or khft.charity@nhs.net.
News in brief In addition to some of the larger projects that are featured, summarised below are some examples of smaller projects that have also benefitted from charitable support over the last year. A VIVA2 motomed cycling machine Purchased for use by patients on the medical and care of the elderly wards to facilitate rehabilitation, improve muscle strength and reduce length of stay C freezer for research Allowing Kingston Hospital to participate in commercial and non-commercial NHS portfolio studies which require access to C freezing, while increasing its ability to help with Kingston University collaborations. Video conferencing equipment Charitable funds allowed the acquisition of new video conferencing equipment for the Sir William Rous Unit s seminar room, where multi-disciplinary cancer meetings take place. This new equipment allows for efficient communication with teams at the Royal Marsden and St. George s Hospital, supporting clinical discussions for urology, lung, upper gastrointestinal, haematology and breast patients, allowing staff to visualise radiology and histology images and discuss treatment, as if they were on the same site. Yoga and wellbeing support Charitable funds have been used to help with the mental and physical wellbeing of hospital staff. 1-1 yoga sessions, as well as bespoke sessions for teams, help with mind-body connection and to work on strategies to deal with stress (the principal reason for sickness absence across the hospital). Electronic reclining chairs Thanks to donations from two grateful patients, two electronic reclining armchairs have been purchased for added comfort for patients using the haematology service. Charitable funds have also allowed for the acquisition of eight riser recliner chairs for use in a number of the elderly care wards, where previously there was a critical lack of appropriate seating. These new chairs have reduced the incidence of patient falls and pressure ulcers, improved patients chest clearance and prevented weakening of muscles, facilitating rehabilitation. Respiratory equipment Charitable funds enabled the purchase of 25 nebulisers, which allow patients to have inhaled antibiotics at home without having to come into the hospital. This equipment also helps improve patient comfort for people with bronchiectasis. They can also be utilised by pregnant women with asthma during pregnancy and for those patients who cannot use inhalers.
External view of the Sir William Rous Unit after the works have been completed 2 3 Haematology day unit The haematology service is to move to the Sir William Rous Unit, Kingston Hospital s main building for cancer services which opened 10 years ago, following a successful fundraising campaign. Plans are being finalised to add a second floor to accommodate the haematology service which will be large enough to treat 3,000 patients each year. For the first time it will enable chemotherapy services to be delivered from one building. As well as improving communication and support between the Royal Marsden chemotherapy team and Kingston Hospital s haematology team, this new unit will provide a dedicated space for haematology cancer patients, while improving the patient experience. It will also afford easier access to wellbeing support and the Macmillan and Information Support Centre. Kingston Hospital Charity has committed significant funding towards the cost of building and equipping the new unit, thanks to a very generous bequest from a past patient. The hope is that the new floor will be completed by the end of 2018, assuming work can start over the summer.
Consistently excellent dementia care Nearly half of Kingston Hospital s inpatients over the age of 75 have confirmed or suspected dementia which is double the national average. This is because Kingston and Richmond are among the top five boroughs in the country for life expectancy, leading to an elderly, frail population who have frequent contact with their local health service. In response, Kingston Hospital has implemented a strategy to deliver consistently excellent dementia care to its patients and their families. The hospital s efforts were recognised when it was one of three organisations shortlisted as a finalist for the Alzheimer s Society Dementia Friendly Organisation Large award, at the end of last year. As a finalist the hospital was recognised as leading a dementia movement that challenges misunderstandings, changes attitudes and raises awareness. Kingston Hospital was in good company, alongside British Gas who was announced as the winner at an awards evening last November. As well as ensuring it has the right staff, care pathways, support and systems in place, a key part of this strategy is
a commitment to transform its elderly care wards, so that they are completely dementia-friendly safe, homely and comfortable social and therapeutic environments that facilitate all types of functioning. A dementia-friendly ward is designed to ensure better, safer, calmer and shorter stays for patients with dementia, while enhancing their welfare. Kingston Hospital Charity has committed to funding the added-value elements that are critical to transforming these wards including the flooring, lighting, signage, wall finishes, artwork, social spaces and furniture. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters who have helped raise approximately 600,000 to date, Derwent Ward re-opened at the end of 2016 and work on Blyth Ward will take place over the summer. If you are interested, there is still time to make a donation to this project, as we hope to have raised the remaining funds needed by the end of the summer. Please complete and return the response form provided at the back of this newsletter or you can donate online at onlineforms/kingstonhospital/donate.html. Thank you very much. Acute hospital wards can be unfamiliar and disorientating places for people affected by dementia the Derwent Ward is a shining example of the importance of dementia-friendly design and how it can contribute to those affected by dementia experiencing better and shorter stays in hospital. Tim McLachlan, Operations Director, Greater London, Alzheimer s Society

Thank you We remain extremely grateful to all who have generously contributed to Kingston Hospital Charity. It s our hope that we can engage with a greater number of those in the community that Kingston Hospital serves, as together we can achieve so much more for the benefit of patients and their families, now and in the future. While it s not possible to thank everyone individually, we would like to express our thanks to one or two groups and individuals who have provided support recently. These include: The Willow Real Food Restaurant and Bar for their successful quiz night in April which raised over 400. The Rose Theatre Knitting Group whose six knitting sales to date have raised over 3,000. The Gym-Kingston who presented more than 50 Easter eggs to children in the paediatric wards just before the Easter weekend. Rob and Samantha Moore who have raised over 5,000 to date in support of the hospital s maternity service. The Kingston Horticultural Society for nominating Kingston Hospital Charity as one of its two chosen charities for 2018 and committing to help develop a dementia-friendly sensory garden at the hospital. The Gosling Foundation, Sir Jules Thorn Charitable Trust and Hampton Fuel Allotment Charity for their very generous support of the hospital s dementia care programme. Russell-Cooke s Putney Hill office for donating 120 new toys and games for children s services at Kingston Hospital last Christmas.
