Review of VisMed 2017 Speakers & Topics Humanize the ICU (Keynote speaker session) During his Keynote speech, Dr. Saralegui will take us on a journey through the pitfalls, challenges and the reasons why we can still add value in improving patient outcomes and patient-centred-care through design and a more humanized approach. Dr. Iñaki Saralegui Ph.D. Md. (Intensive Care Specialist, University Hospital de Álava) Dr. Saralegui, is an Intensive Medicine specialist, a University Specialist on BioEthics, and President of the Ethics Committee of OSI-Álava. He was trained on Respecting Choices in Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wisconsin (USA). Currently, he is a Facilitator of this Program and is responsible for all the activities related to communication with patients and families, joint planning of decisions and limits on vital support treatments. Dr Saralegui is one of the founding members of the Project HU-CI.
Bringing the home to the hospital - The Intensive Care environment Building on the theme from this year s Vismed Keynote speech, Dr. Gómez-Tello will broaden the discussion and debate from different sides of the equation around where a humanized approach can enhance actual patient-centred care, providing positive deviations to hospital costs and shortening patient stays. What impact does this have when planning our Intensive Care departments? He will take us through the main factors, all of which have been extensively researched. Dr. Vicente Gómez-Tello PhD. Md. (Medical Assistant in Intensive care Unit Head of Intensive Care, University Hospital Moncloa, Madrid) Dr. Gómez-Tello is currently working as an Intensivist in Hospital Clínica Moncloa, and is also Professor within the Simulation Centre in the University of Medicine of Universidad Europea in Madrid. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr Tello is also responsible for the Architectural Workplace Design team within the previously mentioned Proyecto HU-CI group. Infection vs Design. What more can be done? Every year, many lives are lost to Hospital acquired infection - what can we do? What points must be considered in planning our critical care environments? What are the real benefit factors? In his role as research manager at the Centre for Healthcare Architecture (CVA) Göran Lindahl focuses on planning of hospitals and other health care facilities. Concurrently, he is working on the theme hospitals after anti-biotics. Join us to learn more about this vitally important topic. Göran Lindahl (Associate Professor, PhD, Architect, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden) Göran Lindahl, Associate Professor, PhD, Architect working at Chalmers University of Technology. In his role as research manager for Center for Healthcare Architecture (CVA) he focuses on the planning of hospitals and other healthcare facilities. This focus is based on a deep understanding of healthcare processes and the strategies of the facility providers. Previous projects include evaluations of usability of hospitals in Sweden and abroad, as well as the educational aspects of clinical and non-clinical environments. Currently he is working in projects concerning Design Dialogues, premises for The Swedish National Board of Institutional Care, evaluation of one bed patient rooms, health promotion in hospitals, real estate issues related to demographic changes and construction clients capabilities.
Changing care practices within ICU what are the environmental impacts? Laura Kristine Bech (Specialist Acute Care Nurse / Studying Master of Science in Health Science, Copenhagen University) With clinicians focused on patients being more quickly released from the ICU, this leads to employing practices that deliver less sedation, as well as moving from multiple room units into single rooming. Therefore patient safety is becoming much more significant in planning and design of the ICU. Laura Bech will focus on the various trends and scientific discussions currently in hot debate - which in themselves create major Intensive Care Unit planning challenges.put these together, and we need to look at how we can manage to keep patients safe, even from themselves when they are not themselves; whilst at all times ensuring the highest standards of care. During this session, we will discuss practical scenarios and solutions and what the implications are for modern planning & design. Laura Kristine Bech is a specialized Acute Care Nurse with extensive experience working in major hospitals within the Nordic countries. Before starting her current studies as a Master of Science in Health Science at the Copenhagen University she was training on research and implementation methods at the University Heart Centre in Copenhagen. Bringing the home to the hospital - The OR environment Operating Room environments are changing due to the increasing use of Intravenous and Local Anaesthesia usage and ideas such as OR Barn concepts. During this session, John Cooper will look at the development of Operating Theatres in particular how and why the infrastructure designs and processes have changed over time. The focus will be on improving staff working and patient environments. John Cooper, Architect RIBA,ARB (Director John Cooper Architecture / Chairman Architects for Health, UK.) John Cooper is a leading figure in healthcare design and has been a principal in practice for 32 years. He is actively engaged in master planning, reshaping the healthcare environment and improving and re-forming it s architecture. He set up JCA in 2009 and the practice has been responsible for designing hospital projects within the UK, Ireland, South Africa, Iceland, Switzerland and Australia. This provides John with an international perspective and a wide-ranging knowledge of best practice. He has been involved in four major cancer care hospital projects and is a published author on this particular design field. He is a regular speaker at conferences in the UK and overseas, as well as writing for the many major architectural journals in the UK.
Surgical imaging today and tomorrow As surgical imaging is part of all Critical care environments, here our speakers will take a look at the considerations of technology which has developed dramatically since initial introduction. Today, this technology offers previously undreamt of pre and perioperative support. This session will include dual approaches: Prof Clemens Bullitta will go briefly through the historical background of imaging, then take us through the ultra-modern robotic high-resolution and communitive technology available today - building a vision to the future. Dr Charpentier and Mr Kuhn will present the new hybrid operating room at the INCCI Luxembourg which combines the characteristics of a conventional cardiac surgery operating theatre with those of an interventional cardiology room. This newly constructed room is equipped with the latest multi-axis design of the Siemens X-ray machine, the Artis Zeego, which uses robot manipulator arm technology, well known in the automotive industry. It is also equipped with multimodal imaging technology, integrating information from different imaging sources and greatly facilitating the work of the operator. The INCCI is thus equipped with a modern tool that allows it to follow the trend towards a less invasive approach - bringing together cardiac surgeons and interventional cardiologists in common procedures. During this session, they will take a closer look at the fundamental questions which they have dealt with in the planning and construction phases. About the speakers: Prof. Dr. med. Clemens Bulitta (Head of studies, Wolfgang Medical Technology) Prof. Dr. Bulitta has broad, international experience and knowledge in clinical medicine as well as the Healthcare and Medical Technology industries. After he completed his studies in both Europe and the USA he joined the Siemens AG Healthcare Sector Group where he filled various management positions for the Surgical field. From 2010 he was responsible for the global Project and Partnership Management for Angiography Systems in the Operating theatre, so called Hybrid Surgery. Since March 1, 2012, he has held the role of Professor for Diagnostic Systems and Medical Technology Management at the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Amberg-Weiden. In 2014 Prof Bulitta was appointed head of the bachelor's program in Medical Engineering. Since January 2015, he is also heading the new Institute of Medical Engineering, which he personally founded. Dr. Arnaud Charpentier, FEBTCVS MD. (Director General - INCCI Luxembourg) Dr. Arnaud Charpentier studied Medicine at Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg, before continuing his surgical training specializing in General Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Cardiac Surgery at the Center Hospitalier Régional and University of Strasbourg. He was then appointed Hospital Practitioner, Hospital Surgeon in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery of the University Hospitals of Strasbourg. He currently practices as a Consulting Surgeon at the National Institute of Cardiac Surgery and Interventional Cardiology of Luxembourg. After additional training in hospital management in Louvain, he took up the post of Deputy Medical Director and has since been promoted to Director General. During his career he has published over 20 papers on various subjects. His interest in human heart surgery dates back to 1999, and since then he has regularly participated in surgical missions in Mauritius (1999), Vietnam and Laos ( ), and since 2009 in Mongolia in Ulan Bator, at the Shastin Hospital.
Mr. Eric Kuhn (Conseiller de Direction, INCCI Luxembourg) Mr. Eric Kuhn is a specialist in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine and an internal consultant at the National Center for Heart Surgery and Interventional Cardiology in Luxembourg. He worked as a nurse at the university hospital in Aachen during which time he also completed his advanced training for Anaesthesia and Intensive Care medicine. He then went to the St. Elisabeth Clinic and together with the cardiac surgeon Dr. Nicolaus Bourg, built the first intensive care unit in Luxembourg. He then become Nursing Director of the Intensive Care unit Klink St. Elisabeth. From 2001 to 2007, he was responsible for the Anaesthesia and Intensive Care unit at INCCI. As of 2007, he worked as an internal advisor to the management, his latest project being the construction of the new INCCI.MD. Process optimization and modern design in the OR - is this a contradiction? Planning and process optimizations can they live in harmony? Here, we will visit this intriguing subject from both the side of the clinician as well as the planner. Join us for this session, which aims to optimize our environments for increasing throughput efficiency. About the speakers: Per Löfqvist (Hospital Technical Manager, South Stockholm Hospital, Sweden) Per Löfqvist, as the Technical Manager at South Stockholm Hospital, is responsible for the introduction of technology on a daily basis. This combined with his previous working experience with Siemens and GE Imaging enables him to take us through his experiences in the usage of prefabricated mock-ups for their new surgical building project, including a vision into their detailed process planning. Prof. Dr. med. W. Weyland, D.E.A.A. (Chief Doctor and specialist for Anaesthesia, Florence- Nightingale-Hospital, Düsseldorf, Germany) Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Weyland is head of the Anaesthesia Department at the Florence Nightingale Hospital in Düsseldorf. He has been repeatedly responsible for major OR reorganisation and refurbishments for various German hospitals and held the function of Operating Room Manager. His latest project was to take part in planning a new OR at the Florence Nightingale Hospital with the aim to run parallel processes in patient- and sterile good preparation in order to improve efficiency.
