Today, we continue to honor that work by strengthening Inland and the services we offer. 3 Achieving better outcomes At Inland, we strive to be better every day. The hard-working and innovative spirit of the people that make up Inland is how we earned the prestigious Top Rural Hospital award for We are proud to be one of only 18 rural hospitals across the country to receive this national recognition for quality and safety by The Leapfrog Group, an independent hospital watchdog organization. Achieving an A in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade program is also required for the Top Rural Hospital award. Inland has earned straight A s since the program was created in 2012 one of only 59 hospitals in the U.S. with straight A s! Lakewood, our continuing care center on the Inland campus, achieved 5-stars the best rating possible in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services quality rating system. CMS created this rating system to help consumers compare nursing facilities. Thanks to our many generous donors for supporting events that help us enhance care at Inland and the home-like atmosphere at Lakewood. $61,000 was donated from Lakewood Continuing Care Center s May Day Auction. A special thanks to auctioneer extraordinaire, Marie Cormier, committee members, and the tireless fundraising efforts of Doug and Rita Sukeforth! Funds went toward vacations at the coast for residents and items to help improve quality of life, such as robotic cats and visits to the beauty parlor. $62,000 was raised at our twelfth annual Fall Pops Concert with the Portland Symphony Orchestra and soprano, Suzanne Nance, which benefitted services for women and infants at Inland. ie Cormier keforth with Mar Rita and Doug Su ction at the May Day Au Suzanne Nance w ith PSO at Inland Fall Pops Co ncert 3
4 Inland s Dedication to Women At Inland, we recognize the power of women in helping their families stay healthy and happy. We realize that to do so, women need to be at their healthiest. We re especially proud to help the women in our communities take better care of themselves and their families with the following innovations and enhanced services: The new Inland Women s Imaging Center, which offers the latest 3-D mammography and walk-in mammograms for busy women. The EMHS Center for Women s Health at Inland, a virtual center for easy access to health and wellness resources (emhswomenscenter.org/inland). A Community Health Navigator service that links patients to community resources for wellness, medical services, and life s challenges that can be barriers to good health. Tree of HOPE, a postpartum support group that offers a safe place to listen, talk, and learn. A Bone Health Clinic and urinary incontinence service that help women stay active as they age. LET S GO! Small Steps for a Healthy Pregnancy First 1000 Days program at Inland Women s Health Care. 20 years of Women s Wellness health fair, Central Maine s premier health event. 5 Our Connections to You sing student Carole as a nur in 1957 Carole w it h John D a at her 50 lton, Inland Pres id -year cele bration ent, By the numbers Carole connected with us all When Carole Boardman, RN, began her career as a nurse, she went to work in a dress, nylons, and a cap. Medical records were handwritten. Syringes were sterilized with fire, and iron lungs breathed for patients. Carole cared for her last patient at Inland Hospital last fall and retired after 60 years of nursing, 51 of those at Inland. During her career she has seen incredible changes, from technology and medical advancements to major shifts in patient care and the doctor-nurse dynamic. However, she says, some things remain the same these many decades after graduating from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. 116 community volunteers donated 10,367 hours to Inland and Lakewood The connection a nurse makes with a patient is still the foundation of care and influences the lives of patients and nurses alike. Carole tears up as she reflects on the thousands of patients she has cared for, getting to know many families well, and sharing in their lives. Carole was an excellent nurse, mentor, and role model one who cared deeply for patients and colleagues, truly living the Inland values of passion, respect, and integrity. It s no wonder her nickname at Inland was Mother Boardman. You have to love people, Carole says. There are going to be a lot of peaks and valleys as a nurse, and it has to come from your heart. Inland and our patients will always be a part of me. 359 medical providers 591 Inland employees 149 Lakewood employees 14 Primary & Specialty Care practices 5
6 Our Community Health Connections Working with our many community partners, Inland continues to make progress on our three-year Community Health Strategy, which includes plans for obesity prevention (physical activity and nutrition); substance abuse; mental health and depression; poverty and economic opportunity; healthy food access; and opioid harm reduction. See complete details in the Progress Report to our Community at. 1,218 people from 363 families joined us for our monthly LET S GO! Family Fun Series events in Inland partnered with 29 organizations to link families with local resources for staying active and eating healthy foods. Learn more about the LET S GO! Inland s Family Fun Series is a way for us to spend quality time together being active. We can t wait until the next event! - Pam Taylor, Waterville 6
7 Connecting with Partners Helps Us Do More... Together! Promoting quality of life in our community happens in many ways and we believe the more we get involved, the more we can help improve overall health and well-being. Our staff volunteer on boards and committees; and help at their churches, children s schools, and many other organizations. They re involved because it makes them feel good to give back and they see how meaningful their contributions are to the future of our community. Through our Community Benefit program, we granted more than $60,000 to 18 local nonprofits and 14 schools, after-school, and daycare programs in These grants helped organizations impact issues that affect quality of life, including obesity prevention, education, economic growth, and access to the arts Community Benefit Grant Partners nd as 211 Man with Nikki Dan Booth, vice president at Inla for 211Maine.
