1 The Laurels of Athens Area Hospitals The Athens area is relatively segmented in terms of Medicare hospital discharge shares. O Bleness Memorial Hospital holds a 23% market share, but this is almost entirely from the Athens County area. Fairfield Medical Center and Hocking Valley Community Hospital follow with a Medicare discharge market shares of 14% each. Riverside Methodist Hospital holds a 10% share of the discharge market, followed by Ohio State University Hospital with 5%. Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville, Mount Carmel West and Grant Medical Center each hold a 4% share of the Medicare market. The two market segments of the Athens area, Athens County and Hocking County, have very different preferences in terms of hospitals. Athens County favors O Bleness Memorial Hospital (37%), Riverside Methodist Hospital (13%), Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville (7%), Fairfield Medical Center (7%), Ohio State University Hospital (4%), Grant Medical Center (3%), Camden Clark Memorial Hospital (3%), Doctors Hospital (3%), Saint Joseph s Hospital (3%), Hocking Valley Community Hospital (2%) and Mount Carmel West (2%). Meanwhile, Hocking County prefers a different set of hospitals including Hocking Valley Community Hospital (34%), Fairfield Hospital (27%), Ohio State University Hospital (7%), Mount Carmel West (7%), Berger Health System (5%), and Riverside Methodist Hospital (5%). O Bleness Memorial Hospital O Bleness Memorial Hospital is located in Athens, Ohio. It is a member of the O Bleness Health System. It controls 23% of the overall Athens Medicare discharge market share and 37% of Athens County. It is a private, not for profit facility that targets southeastern Ohio residents. The facility is operated by Sheltering Arms Hospital Foundation, Inc. They specialize in cardiovascular care in conjunction with Riverside Methodist in Columbus, as well as cardiac and pulmonary rehab through WellWorks at Ohio University. It also offers cancer services in conjunction with Athens Cancer Center and cancer support through the American Cancer Society. O Bleness has 76 beds with an ADC of Of that 28.8 ADC, they run an average of 11.8 Medicare. In 2009, O Bleness discharged 2,808 patients. 1,023 of the discharges were Medicare covered. 978 of the Medicare discharges were from the overall Athens market (95.6%). 973 of the Medicare discharges were from Athens County alone. Of the 1,023 Medicare discharges in 2009, 286 were discharged to a skilled nursing facility (28.0%). Based on a 25 day length of stay, the 286 discharges to SNFs would keep 20 SNF beds filled. The 978 Medicare discharges originating from the Athens market are estimated to have resulted in 273 Medicare SNF admissions. 273 Medicare admissions with an ALOS of 25 days would fill 19 SNF beds. O Bleness Medicare discharges were classified as 26% Medicine, 25% Pulmonary, 18% Cardiology, 7% Orthopedics / Orthopedic Surgery, and 6% Neurology.

2 Riverside Methodist Hospital Riverside Methodist is the Ohio Health flag ship and offers every major service and specialty. It controls a 10% market share of Athens Medicare discharges and 13% of the Athens County market share. Riverside has 722 beds with a 2009 ADC of 532. Of the 532 census, 186 were Medicare covered. In 2009, Riverside discharged 43,921patients. 15,115 of the discharges were Medicare covered. 12,354 of the Medicare discharges were from the overall Athens market (2.8%). Of the 15,115 Medicare discharges in 2009, 4,263 were discharged to a skilled nursing facility (28.2%). Based on a 25 day length of stay, the 4,263 discharges to SNFs would keep 292 SNF beds filled. The 419 Medicare discharges originating from the Athens market are estimated to have resulted in 118 Medicare SNF admissions. 118 Medicare admissions with an ALOS of 25 days would fill 8SNF beds. Riverside Methodist Medicare discharges were classified as 26% Cardiology / Cardiovascular Surgery, 17% Medicine, 14% Orthopedics and 9% Neurology / Neurosurgery. Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville Doctors of Nelsonville is located in Nelsonville, OH and is a member of Ohio Health. Services at this facility include ophthalmology, orthopedics, geriatric specialists, wound care, physical and occupational therapy, as well as an on site outpatient clinic. The clinic offers cardiology, urology, nephrology, podiatry, and hematology/oncology services. Doctors of Nelsonville controls a 4% market share of Athens Medicare discharges and 7% of the Athens County market share. Doctors of Nelsonville has 25 beds with a 2009 ADC of 3.7. In 2009, Doctors of Nelsonville discharged 405 patients. 211 of the discharges were Medicare covered. 179 of the Medicare discharges were from the overall Athens market (84.8%). 175 of these were from Athens County. Of the 211 Medicare discharges in 2009, 16 were discharged to a skilled nursing facility (7.6%). Based on a 25 day length of stay, the 16 discharges to SNFs would keep 1 SNF bed filled. The 179 Medicare discharges originating from the Athens market are estimated to have resulted in 14 Medicare SNF admissions. 14 Medicare admissions with an ALOS of 25 days would fill 1SNF bed. Doctors of Nelsonville Medicare discharges were classified as 38% Pulmonary, 34% Medicine, 11% Cardiology, and 6% Orthopedics.

3 Fairfield Medical Center Fairfield Medical Center is located in Lancaster, OH. It offers cancer care, heart care, maternity services, physical therapy and rehab, surgery services, and total joint replacements. The medical center recently added a new facility called River View Surgery Center. Fairfield controls a 14% market share of Athens Medicare discharges and 7% of the Athens County market share. Fairfield has 220 beds with a 2009 ADC of Of the census, 59.5 were Medicare covered. In 2009, Fairfield discharged 11,797 patients. 4,636 of the discharges were Medicare covered. 585 of the Medicare discharges were from the overall Athens market (12.6%). 175 were from Athens County. Of the 4,636 Medicare discharges in 2009, 1,117 were discharged to a skilled nursing facility (24.1%). Based on a 25 day length of stay, the 1,117 discharges to SNFs would keep 77 SNF beds filled. The 585 Medicare discharges originating from the Athens market are estimated to have resulted in 141 Medicare SNF admissions. 141 Medicare admissions with an ALOS of 25 days would fill 10 SNF beds. Fairfield Medicare discharges were classified as 21% Medicine, 18% Cardiology / Cardiovascular Surgery, 16% Pulmonary, 11% Orthopedics and 5% Neurology / Neurosurgery. Ohio State University Hospital The OSU Hospital figures include the Ross Heart Hospital and OSU East but exclude figures from the Arthur James Cancer Hospital. OSU is a teaching hospital and still provides a lot of indigent care but is also trying to attract more Insurance and Medicare to its "Centers of Excellence". OSU controls about 5% of the Medicare discharges in the Athens market area. It holds 4% of the Athens County market. OSU Hospital has 835 med/surg beds, 60 psych and 60 rehab beds. The 835 med/surg beds maintained an average census of 644 during Out of the 644 total patients, 180 had Medicare coverage and only 88 were covered by Medicaid. The OSU Hospitals discharged 45,473 patients in ,788 of the discharges were Medicare cases. 202 of the Medicare covered discharges were from the Athens market (1.6%). 2,327 of the 12,788 Medicare discharges were discharged to a nursing facility (18.2%). Assuming a 25 day ALOS, the 2,327 SNF discharges should have filled 159 SNF beds. The 202 Medicare discharges from the Athens market should have resulted in approximately 37 SNF admissions and filled 3 SNF beds. OSU Hospital discharges were classified as 27% Cardiology / Cardiovascular Surgery, 22% Medicine, 8% Pulmonology, 7% Neurology / Neurosurgery and only 4% Orthopedics.

4 Grant Medical Center Grant Medical Center is located in downtown Columbus and is an Ohio Health facility. It controls 4% of the Athens market area Medicare hospital discharges and 3% of the Athens County market. This hospital specializes in cardiovascular techniques and orthopedics. They have recently merged with Riverside Hospital. Grant has 352 bed and runs an ADC of with a Medicare ADC of In 2009, Grant discharged 20,756 patients. 5,648 of the discharges were Medicare covered. 157 of the Medicare discharges were from the overall Athens market (2.8%). Of the 5,648 Medicare discharges in 2009, 1,208 were discharged to a skilled nursing facility (21.4%). Based on a 25 day length of stay, the 1,208 discharges to SNFs would keep 83 SNF beds filled. The 157 Medicare discharges originating from the Athens market are estimated to have resulted in 34 Medicare SNF admissions. 34 Medicare admissions with an ALOS of 25 days would fill 2 SNF beds. Grant's Medicare discharges were classified as 20% Cardiology / Cardiovascular Surgery, 20% Orthopedics / Orthopedic Surgery, 19% Medicine, 9% Pulmonology, and 8% Neurology. Camden Clark Medical Center Camden Clark is made up of two campuses, Camden Clark Memorial Campus and Camden Clark Saint Joseph s Campus. Originally, the Memorial Campus was named Camden Clark Memorial Hospital. The Saint Joseph Campus was known as Saint Joseph Hospital. After the recent purchase of Saint Joseph by West Virginia United Health System (WVUHS), originally under the ownership of Signature Hospital Corporation, WVUHS merged the two Parkersburg, WV hospitals into a medical center. This decision was a response to the competition between the two, with hopes of coordination and a strong front against new economic and healthcare hardships in West Virginia. The new medical center targets the mid Ohio Valley region. Camden Clark Memorial Campus (Memorial Hospital) Memorial Campus controls 2% of the Athens market area Medicare hospital discharges and 3% of the Athens County market. It offers a 25 bed skilled nursing unit. Services include a behavioral health unit, bone and joint care, cardiopulmonary services, a community cancer center, a critical care unit, a diabetes wellness center, diagnostic imaging, digestive health services, outpatient services, rehabilitation and wound care services. Memorial Campus has 221 beds and runs an ADC of with a Medicare ADC of In 2009, Memorial Campus discharged 10,131 patients. 4,607 of the discharges were Medicare covered. 83 of the Medicare discharges were from the overall Athens market (1.8%), all from Athens County.

5 Of the 4,607 Medicare discharges in 2009, 908 were discharged to a skilled nursing facility (19.7%). Based on a 25 day length of stay, the 908 discharges to SNFs would keep 62 SNF beds filled. The 83 Medicare discharges originating from the Athens market are estimated to have resulted in 16 Medicare SNF admissions. 16 Medicare admissions with an ALOS of 25 days would fill 1 SNF bed. Memorial Campus's Medicare discharges were classified as 19% Cardiology / Cardiovascular Surgery, 19% Medicine, 17% Pulmonology, 8% Orthopedics / Orthopedic Surgery, and 6% Neurology. Saint Joseph s Campus controls about 2% of the Medicare discharges in the Athens market area. It holds 3% of the Athens County market. Saint Joseph s Campus has 184 beds. The 184 beds maintained an average census of 78.5 during Out of the 78.5 ADC, 45.5 had Medicare coverage. The Saint Joseph s Campus discharged 6,738 patients in ,352 of the discharges were Medicare cases. 73 of the Medicare covered discharges were from the Athens market (2.2%). 330 of the 3,352 Medicare discharges were discharged to a nursing facility (9.8%). Assuming a 25 day ALOS, the 330 SNF discharges should have filled 23 SNF beds. The 73 Medicare discharges from the Athens market should have resulted in approximately 7 SNF admissions and filled 0 SNF beds. Saint Joseph s Campus discharges were classified as 30% Cardiology / Cardiovascular Surgery, 18% Medicine, 17% Pulmonology, 15% Orthopedics / Orthopedic Surgery, and 6% Neurology / Neurosurgery. Doctors Hospital Doctors Hospital is an Ohio Health hospital serving western Columbus. It holds 2% of the Athens Medicare discharge market share and 3% of the Athens County market share. Doctors has 179 beds with a 2009 ADC of 112. Of the 112 census, Doctors had 40 Medicare patients on average. In 2009, Doctors Hospital discharged 8,926 patients. 2,824 of the discharges were Medicare covered. 86 of the Medicare discharges were from the overall Athens market (3.0%). Doctors Hospital's Medicare discharges were classified as 26% Cardiology / Cardiovascular Surgery, 22% Medicine, 17% Pulmonology, and only 5% Orthopedics. Hocking Valley Community Hospital Hocking Valley Community Hospital is located in Logan, Ohio and serves the Hocking County and Hocking Hills region. It is a community not for profit facility. It has a 30 bed SNF which costs $ per day and a 10 bed geriatric psychiatric unit that offers services for $ per day. The two combined campuses have 701 med/surg beds, 20 psych and 24 rehab beds. The 701 med/surg beds maintained an average census of 474 during Out of the 474 total patients, 150 had Medicare coverage. The two campuses discharged 33,359 patients in ,066 of the discharges were Medicare cases. 160 of the Medicare covered discharges were from the Athens market (0.9%).

The 160 Medicare discharges from the Athens market should have resulted in approximately 23 SNF admissions and filled 2 SNF beds. Mt Carmel discharges were classified as 26% Cardiology / Cardiovascular Surgery, 20% Medicine, 12% Pulmonology, and 10% Orthopedics.
