4 1. Background: the health care system in Valença-Tui DEMAND: Valença (Portugal) -117,1 km² and app. 14,000 residents. Tui (Spain) - 68,3 km 2 and app. 17,000 residents. SUPPLY: hospital in Viana do Castelo (PT - 50 km from Valenca-Tui) is a district hospital (hospital sta Luzia) with internal medicine, surgery, orthopedics hospital in Vigo (ES - 30 km from Valenca-Tui) is a general hospital with almost all specialties (hospital Meixoero) Pontevedra has a second level hospital, Braga has a central hospital
5 1. Background: the health care system in Valença-Tui Both Viana de Castelo and Vigo hospitals can be reached by car through motorway HOSPITAL EUROCITY HOSPITAL
6 1. Background: the health care system in Valença-Tui Procedures in emergency One health centre in each of Tui and Valenca, with only a general doctor. Another health centre is located in Monçao (Portugal 20 km from Valenca- Tui) providing other cares more specialized than Valenca-Tui. They cannot provide specialized treatments, with medical equipments. If the situation of the patient is more serious, even more specialised treatments can be provided only in the hospitals of Viana do Castelo or Vigo.

Proposals and recommendations - Improving the service of health centres in Eurocity by providing specialized cares as well (at least pediatrics, orthopedics, geriatrics), especially emergency services; - Ensuring better and faster access to health centres through sustainable and efficient public transport choices - Improving safety and health by reducing accidents, increasing trips by walk and cycle - Improving air quality and reducing transport noise - Data on the location, frequency and severity of vehicles accidents in the active roads within the area of the both municipalities (black spots analysis) should be considered when a new emergency or secure service located or re-located Example of black spots analysis to locate road accidents Source: Tiboni & Rossetti, 2013

Proposals and recommendations - Ensuring integration of institutional policies regarding health facilities between both municipalities to develop database on the number of patients who use their services as well as their home address in order to optimise their accessibility to the services of the Eurocity - Accessibility maps can be used to perform ex ante evaluations on the location of new residential developments and health care facilities - Comparing accessibility maps with the master plan urban areas of two municipilities (residential areas for development without walking accessibility to health care); - Some areas, even with high population density are not accessible by public transport, walking and cycling to the main health care services.
