1 Overview of GE Applications & Departments Overview Introduction GE is the name of the software Washington University School of Medicine uses to manage patient care and other workflow processes. The integrated GE software streamlines patient care and other workflow processes by capturing, managing and making information accessible throughout the health care organization. 2 Overview of GE Applications GE is a product that allows the organization to combine multiple applications into a single desktop presentation that can be accessed via the web. The main applications that Washington University School of Medicine uses include: Ambulatory Visit Management (AVM) Billing and Accounts Receivable (BAR) Enterprise Task Management (ETM) Advanced Workflow Scheduling (AWF) Scanning Transaction Editing System (TES) AVM streamlines the patient visit by fostering proactive information collection before the patient arrives, thereby speeding the check-in process. At the time of the appointment, front desk staff can quickly verify information before the patient is seen by the physician. A powerful tool improves the accuracy of insurance assignment, enables upfront approval for authorizations and referrals, and facilitates co-payment collections. BAR is a highly flexible system that enables physician organizations to manage financial data, maximize revenue collection, and generate comprehensive reports for performance analysis ETM is a next generation solution to manage the accounts receivable operations of healthcare organizations. ETM creates online tasks when certain application events occur in the GE system SCHED is a scheduling application that empowers users to efficiently schedule patient appointments and resources, maintain provider schedules, and perform reporting. TES improves organizational efficiency and profitability with intelligent charge routing and claims scrubbing functionality. It is designed to make sure that each charge is valid and billable before it becomes a receivable. 2

3 All GE applications use a common registration repository to pull information. This eliminates the need to duplicate data entry and streamlines functionality. 5 Academic Master Patient Index (ampi) ampi is a shared database that collects specific patient information for patients seen at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH), St. Louis Children s Hospital (SLCH), and Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM). The goal of the database is to share registration and insurance updates across institutions so patients visiting more than one of our sites only have to provide this information once, whether it s BJH, SLCH, or WUSM they are visiting first. There is a trigger on screen 1 of registration that initiates the sending of the registration information to ampi. The trigger is the date the registration information was last reviewed with the patient. When the Patient Info review with patient? field is completed or updated, ampi identifies which registration information is the most current. If the field is not completed or updated, there is a risk that older information from BJH or SLCH may override the information in GE. The drawing below shows the flow of information between the registration systems. 5

6 Departments using Scheduling Application Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) departments which utilize the scheduling application are as follows: AN IM NL NS OB OP OS OY PD PS PT SU Anesthesiology Internal Medicine Neurology Neurosurgery Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) Ophthalmology Orthopedic Surgery Otolaryngology Pediatrics Psychiatry Physical Therapy Surgery Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) departments, which do not currently utilize the Scheduling Application but do use GE for billing, are as follows: RA RD PA Radiation Oncology Radiology Surgical Pathology A few clinical areas at Barnes-Jewish Hospital also utilize the GE Scheduling Application for ambulatory patient scheduling. The Department prefix for these areas is BJ. 6
