PRE- PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS What do I need to complete before I start? All students are required to read this document and then complete the Student Contact Form located on this website and returned via to groupcapability@rdns.org.au. This must be completed and received by RDNS SA no later than 1 week prior to commencement of your placement. Failure to submit this document will result in the student placement offer being withdrawn. Why do we need your contact and emergency contact details? Community nursing placements will often involve students meeting Preceptors outside of a designated office. For student s safety it is important that RDNS is able to contact the student directly should there be a change of Preceptor or if the Preceptor is delayed in collecting the student. In the event that a student does arrive for placement and is not able to be contacted, RDNS require details of students Emergency Contact. Please complete these details in the space provided on the RDNS Student Contract Form. PLACEMENT Where do I go on the first day? All students are required to meet their Preceptor at 0730 at their designated Service Delivery Centre (base) or Nursing Centre as per information and allocation provided to you by your University. Within that Service Delivery Centre You will be allocated to either the: Chronic and Complex Care team or Your Preceptor will endeavor to arrive as scheduled but may have client commitments prior to meeting you. The address of each Service Delivery Centre is listed in this document and a map is provided on this website. Occasionally you may be asked to present to an RDNS Nursing Centre. Details of the Nursing Centre location should have been provided to you. If you are unsure as to where you are expected to present on the first day please contact your Student Placement Coordinator or groupcapability@rdns.org.au

2 How do I get to and from placement? As this is a community placement, some Preceptors will commence their working day from home. Following the first day students will be required to meet their Preceptor at either the Service Delivery Centre (base) or at an agreed community location that is convenient to where the nurse is delivering care. Please note this maybe anywhere within the Service Delivery area (see map). Student Preceptors are not able to collect or return you from your place of residence. It is the students responsibility to be independent in travel to and from the meeting place. It is required students are punctual at all times. Due to the large number of student placements it is not always possible for students to be placed at a location close to home. Students who are not independent with travel should discuss suitability of this placement with their Student Placement Coordinator prior to the start date. Do not park in area designated to another organisation or restricted to RDNS pool car. Parking area is patrolled and you will be fined for illegal parking. Proceed to level 3 and use the directory to alert staff you have arrived Please call if you have any concerns or problems. When you meet your preceptor you may follow them out to round or alternatively a permit will be given to you. The permit is likely to only be required on first day, following which you will meet the nurse directly in the round area each day. 3 Days and Shift times Most placements occur between Monday Friday 07:30-16:00, however as part of your placement there may be negotiated later shifts or a weekend. Students do not work public holidays. Additional Activities During placement students may negotiate to spend time at one of our Nursing Centres or with our Palliative Care or Paediatric teams. Specialised placements need to be discussed and organised with RDNS Preceptors. Opportunities are limited and will be dependent on student numbers. Unfortunately RDNS may not always be able to accommodate all requests. What if I am Sick, Running late or Nurse does not arrive at agreed meeting place? Our Contact Centre operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week and is staffed by both Clinical Nurses and Administration staff. Students are required to contact the Contact Centre to advise of sick or personal leave, or to contact or message Student Preceptors. The contact number is Please ring prior to 6:30 AM on the day of leave to message your Preceptor. Students should not contact Preceptor directly. Please provide the following details: STUDENT NAME UNIVERSITY PRECEPTOR NAME OR ROUND/CLINIC IN WHICH STUDENT IS PLACED REQUEST TO BE SENT TO PRECEPTOR & RELEVANT CASE COORDINATOR STUDENT ALSO REQUIRED TO CONTACT UNIVERSITY CLINICAL FACILITATOR Expectations, Professional Behaviour and Responsibilities for students Following is a list of attributes required of a nursing or midwifery student whilst on clinical placement with RDNS SA. These attributes should be considered by students prior to commencement of placement. Students must be mindful of positive attributes required when theories learnt at University are practiced during clinical placement. RDNS SA abides by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Ethics and the National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse and Enrolled nurses.

4 All nursing and midwifery students are required to: Wear student identification as supplied by your education provider; Introduce himself/herself as a student to patients/clients; Always seeks permission from the patient/client and the responsible nurse/midwife before proceeding with an intervention; Maintain confidentiality of information given by or about patients/clients; Acknowledge legal responsibilities for child abuse and neglect, when appropriate; Accept responsibility for all relevant aspects of patient or client care within the limitations of the student role as determined by the clinical supervisor/preceptor and education provider s facilitator; Attend relevant meetings and contribute effectively when required; Behave in a manner which is not disruptive to patients/clients and RDNS staff Maintain personal tidiness and adhere to appropriate dress code in the clinical setting meeting the standard required by students education provider and health facility; Behave in a respectful manner to colleagues, supervisors, patients/clients and their families; Acknowledge and respond to constructive criticism; Acknowledge and respond to individuals needs, respecting the culture, age, state of health and authority of the health facility or clinical personnel and clients ; Demonstrate an understanding of the approach to client care, and shows willingness to work within this framework; Demonstrate an awareness of individual health workers roles and refer to them appropriately; and Be aware of and maintain appropriate professional boundaries. Personal Mobile Phone Use Students must ensure mobile phones are not used during clinical care. Mobile phones must be left in personal bags in the boot of the RDNS vehicle or in the designated area in the Nursing Centre. If an important call is expected, the student must ensure the mobile phone is on silent and that the Preceptor is aware of the expected phone call. Students should excuse themselves to answer important mobile calls away from the vicinity of the client care. Professional and Ethical Boundaries It is essential to ensure that the relationship between a patient/client and a health care professional is safe, helpful, therapeutic and within professional boundaries as determined by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. The student can be removed from placement if actions are considered to be outside of these professional boundaries. 5 CONFIDENTIALITY During placement with RDNS students will be privy to confidential information relating to clients, families, employees, volunteers and RDNS activities. It is RDNS policy that no information be divulged in writing, verbally or any other means to any third party without prior consent or permission of the Chief Executive Officer. Any breach of this policy will be considered gross misconduct and can result in termination of contract of services including RDNS Student Placement Contract. RDNS has a philosophy of a person centred approach. This philosophy focuses on the value of each individual. It involves respecting and honouring the uniqueness of each person and enabling them to be involved in decisions that have an impact on their life. It promotes independence, well-being and empowerment of the individual and enables each person to feel valued. Our organisational values are underpinned by the principles of a person centred approach. Incident Reporting The reporting of incidents and near misses is a part of the accreditation processes required by all health care facilities and the Occupational Health and Safety Act South Australia. The reporting of any incident or near miss is essential. If the student identifies an incident or near miss whilst on placement this incident or near miss must be reported in detail immediately to the Preceptor who will follow the relevant safety and quality procedures. Accidents, Injuries and Work Related Incidents Students are to ensure completion of workplace safety training provided by their education provider before commencing placement at RDNS. Hazardous Manual Tasks Students are required to have up to date evidence of completion of manual tasks training. It is the student s responsibility to ensure that this has been completed and competency achieved to prevent personal injury or injury to colleagues. Drug Calculations It is a mandatory requirement that students have completed an annual medication calculation competency and achieved 100% mastery before placement is attended. Immunisations Students are required to ensure all immunisations are current. Hand Hygiene on line Students are required to complete online Hand Hygiene module prior to placement. Basic Life Support Students are required to have a current Basic Life Support certificate. Police Clearances Students are required to have current police clearances to attend placement at RDNS SA.
