What is this course about? 1.1 Course description This course builds upon knowledge and skills from previous clinical courses in the nursing program. You will engage in learning in a simulated environment on-campus and within a supported clinical environment of industry. Experienced clinicians will support you to utilize opportunities to apply existing and new knowledge taken from on-campus learning and applied in practice to meet the care needs for clients of either an acute or chronic healthcare setting. 1.2 Course content Build on existing knowledge and skills aiming towards a proficiency level of NBMA competency standards and demonstrates professional attributes of care delivery in areas of communication and assessment Delivery of quality of care using elements of the nursing framework and works within the scope of practice at the level of undergraduate nursing student Develops an understanding on the roles and responsibilities of a nurse within the context of general practice Develops an understanding on the roles and responsibilities of a nurse on the context of community health nursing and caring for clients at home Sustainability of care management working in acute or chronic care models of service delivery Quality and safety of care provision in a variety of community health settings 2. The specific learning outcomes that you will achieve by successful completion of this course: Apply concepts of care, science and theory that underpin the practice of nursing in both on-campus learning, simulations, and off campus facilities when addressing the on-going care needs of a client and their family in various healthcare settings. How am I going to be assessed? 5.1 Grading scale Limited Pass (PU), Fail (UF) Limited Graded Course: This course will be graded as Pass in a Limited Grade Course (PU) or Fail in a Limited Grade Course (UF) as per clause and of the Grades and Grade Point Average (GPA) - Institutional Operating Policy of the University of the Sunshine Coast.

To Be Advised Safe assignment USC facilitator WIL or PC Yes Yes Yes Assessment Task 1: Clinical Skills Assessment Goal: This task has been designed to allow you to work with a fellow student to demonstrate competency in the delivery of safe nursing care. Product: Video recording of clinical skill with associated documentation Format: Recording of clinical skill to be submitted as advised Criteria Application of NMBA Standards by: Demonstration of the ability to think critically in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care within educational and experiential boundaries. Demonstration of safe clinical practice. Demonstration of collaborative practice Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Collaboration Developing Assessment Task 2:-SMART Learning Objectives Goal: Product: Format: Criteria Identify (SMART) Learning Objectives in preparation for your clinical placement experience: An essay consisting of subheadings on each of the four NMBA domain professional practice/critical thinking and analysis/provision and coordination of care/collaborative and therapeutic practice). Each section consist of 300 words (+ or -10%). Finished product 1200 words total. Essay Identify at the pre placement stage four learning objectives (one from each domain) that you would like to achieve during this clinical placement exposure. When you know of the clinical practicum 3 location research on the specific services of the placement, how these services are implemented i.e. day clinics, acute care, long term care and the benefits that are provided to the health of the broader community. Drawing on this researched knowledge you can now set your SMART (specific, measureable, attainable, realistic and timely) goals for this clinical placement experience. Provide a 300 word short essay description on strategies you will adopted during the placement experience and how you will be able to achieve these objectives through evidence and best practice. Details for SMART guidelines and tips for writing SMART learning objectives are given to you as additional support material and is located in under assessment tab.
4 Page 4 SMART learning objectives must be completed prior to the commencement of clinical placement. 1. One copy of the word document is submitted into safe assignment for the course coordinator to mark. 2. A second copy of the word document is submitted in WILS for the facilitator to review on the first day of placement. WILS/Placement Group/Details/Student Reflection Progress Notes/+Add new document. Failure to complete this item prior to placement jeopardises a UF grading. SMART objectives for placement experience: The objective should be a clear set of strategies so that both you and the facilitator can understand the role and requirement towards meeting these objectives. Prepares you to discuss with the placement facilitator what you are expecting to achieve during the clinical placement experience. Provides structured learning outcomes. Promotes communication and discussion towards realistic learning opportunities that the placement experience will give. Learns about the professional role and responsibility of the registered nurse in the context of the clinical placement. Identifies the function of the provider of health services to the wider community. Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Problem solving Developing Assessment Task 3: Clinical Practicum Assessment Goal: Product: Format: Criteria The purpose of this summative assessment is for you to demonstrate completion of allocated placement for this course and satisfactory competency based on the Practice Standards for Registered Nurses at a developing student level and as measured in the Clinical Assessment Tool l Completed nursing practice hours (80) and Summative Clinical Assessment Tool Clinical competency assessment tool submitted to clinical facilitator on completion of practicum placement. Application of the NMBA Standards by: Demonstration of the ability to think critically in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care within educational and experiential boundaries. Demonstration of safe clinical practice. Demonstration of a caring approach in the development, maintenance and termination of therapeutic relationships with people whose health needs challenge such relationships. Please note: You will receive ongoing feedback as a formative and developmental process. A midway assessment will be completed. In addition, if you are not meeting satisfactory practice standards at any point of the placement, learning processes will be implemented to support you to attain the necessary behaviours to satisfactorily meet each standard. Unsatisfactory behaviours which put patient/client safety at risk or which do not adhere with the NMBA Standards for the Registered Nurse, Code of Professional Conduct and/or Code of Ethics criteria and standards may result in your removal from placement. If you do not meet each standard at a satisfactory level you will fail the assessment. Please refer to the clinical handbook for details.therapeutic Practice

You are strongly recommended to log onto the course site on a regular basis. All course announcements, course changes, posting of course materials and grades (via My Interim Results) will be accessed through Blackboard. It is your responsibility to ensure you have adequate internet access (either off campus or oncampus) in order to access Blackboard regularly and to complete required assessment tasks. In a course using Limited Grades, all assessment tasks relating to a work integrated learning (WIL) activity or a professional competency (PC) task are required to be passed for a student to successfully complete the course. Supplementary assessment is not available in courses using Limited Grades. 5.4 Submission penalties Penalties may apply for late submission of assessment tasks. These materials/readings will assist you in preparing for tutorials and assignments, and will provide further information regarding particular aspects of your course. 7.3 Specific requirements Closed in shoes are required in the nursing laboratory Compulsory Practical Classes All laboratory classes in this course are compulsory. If the laboratory session has any formal assessment item(s) associated with it, these must be completed even if you have an acceptable reason for nonattendance of that class. It is the student s responsibility to seek out the course co-ordinator at their earliest convenience to ascertain how they will meet the learning objectives.
