2 Page 2 of 13 INTRODUCTION EQUALS want to support and encourage you to gain the most from your Professional Practice Experience. This information pack has been designed to ensure you meet all necessary professional practice requirements prior to your commencement. To assist you in this process EQUALS have included some key documents you will require as part of your professional practice. You will need to ensure you have read, understood and returned the relevant documents prior to being allocated a placement, this will form your professional practice application. The Professional Practice placement will provide you with an important opportunity as a Diploma of Nursing Student to apply skills and theory in real life situations, within the Aged and Acute setting. Experiencing nursing in different types of health care environments is important for professional development. It helps inform career choice and enables students to apply and gain competence in the many different skills required across various health care settings. There are 2 placements required as part of your Diploma of Nursing program, one is for 210 hours (approx six weeks, equivalent) in the Aged Care sector and the other is for 210 hours (approx six weeks, equivalent) in the Acute Sector. These hours are the minimum requirement for this program and are not negotiable. The high demand for professional practice placements across a range of health disciplines means that professional practice placements are centrally coordinated by EQUALS in the case of Aged Care placements and in conjunction with ClinEd SA for Acute Placements. As such, it is not appropriate for students to seek their own placements outside of the formal systems and processes. When arranging a suitable professional practice placement for you, EQUALS will take into account where you live and your mode of transport, to try and send you to the most appropriate and convenient location. However, there is no guarantee that you will be sent to your closest or preferred facility. As part of this placement support pack, you will be provided with the following documents: Attachment I Employability Skills Attachment II Clinical Placement Log Book Attachment III Clinical Placement Journal Attachments IV Time Sheets Attachments V Nursing and Midwifery Student Clinical Placement Orientation handbook (Department of Health document) incorporating: Student Orientation Checklist and Immunisation Declaration Consent form to undertake a case study General Risk Assessment tool - risk screening questions (where relevant) Attachment VI Clinical Placement Evaluation form to be completed and submitted upon completion of your Placement Attachment VII Risk Management process for Professional Placement reference document Attachment VIII Documentation Checklist end of placement checklist

7 Page 7 of 13 ATTACHMENT I EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS Employability Skills are the skills that a student must develop and demonstrate competency throughout a range of work situations and over the range of units of competency undertaken during the course. They include: 1. Collecting, Analysing and Organising Information A person defines the needs of the audience and the purposes of the information, critically investigates sources to identify the information required, distils the relevant information, identifies within information the main organising categories, and structures and evaluates the quality and validity of information. 2. Communicating Ideas and Information A person chooses the mode and form appropriate to the context and audience, revises and evaluates the communication in the light of feedback, varies style of presentation to suit a variety of contexts, uses ideas to interpret and represent information in a variety of contexts and adapts ideas and information to unanticipated responses from audiences. 3. Planning Organising Activities The capacity to plan and organise ones own work activities, including making good use of time and resources, sorting out priorities and monitoring ones own performance. 4. Working with Others and in Teams A person defines purposes and objectives to be achieved by working with others; establishes roles, procedures and time frames taking into account different perspectives; negotiates with others to define objectives and, where necessary, to monitor and redefine them. 5. Using Mathematical Ideas and Techniques A person clarifies the purpose and objectives of the activity, recognises the assumptions that need to be made in order to apply an idea and technique, adapts the idea and technique to fit the constraints of the situation, makes decisions about the level of accuracy needed to resolve competing demands and interpret and evaluates methods and solutions. 6. Using Technology A person defines the purposes and objectives for the use of technology, transfers technological principles to a new situation, configures and manages a series of operations as a process, selects technological practices to maximise socially and ethically responsible use of technology, and uses technology principles to reduce constraints presented by environs and physical capacity.
