3 Welcome Message from the Organising Chairperson, ASMIC 2012 It is a great pleasure and an honour to extend to you, a warm invitation to the Annual Scientific Meeting on Intensive Care, ASMIC 2012, organised by Malaysian Society of Intensive Care, to be held at Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur from 28 th September to 30 th September We endeavour to put forward a comprehensive scientific programme, which will be educationally stimulating and informative. This meeting will also provide an opportunity for us to share the latest experience and knowledge with local and international speakers, in the specialty of intensive care with aims to further improve the quality of care and quality of life for the critically ill patients. In addition to the main conference, there will be a pre-conference workshop on 27 th September for those who are keen to gain experience in performing ultrasonography in intensive care patients. 4 PRE-CONGRESS WORKSHOP BASIC ULTRASOUND COURSE FOR CRITICAL CARE 27 TH SEPTEMBER 2012, THURSDAY INTRODUCTION This compact one-day workshop is designed for healthcare providers who manage the critically ill or injured. It is structured with lectures, interactive case studies and hands-on stations. The workshop is conducted by certified World Interactive Network focused on Critical Ultrasound (WINFOCUS) trainers. OBJECTIVES To educate healthcare professionals on how to perform and interpret ultrasound examinations in the critical care setting. 1. Discuss the basic fundamentals of ultrasound physics/instrumentation and recognise image artifacts. 2. Demonstrate the operation of the ultrasound system controls and probe selection. 3. Perform routine scan protocols for evaluation of the lung, adult heart, fluid status and shock. 4. Recognise normal/abnormal image characteristics of the above. 5. 10 Free Communications The Organising Committee welcomes the submission of abstracts for both oral and poster presentations. The following awards will be given: 1. ASMIC Award comprising a certificate and cash prize of RM 1, for the best oral presentation. 2. Best Poster Award comprising a certificate and cash prize of RM Authors whose abstracts are not short-listed for the ASMIC Award can opt for the poster presentation. Deadline for Submission of Abstracts : 15 th August Guidelines for Submission of Abstracts Papers to be submitted must be on intensive care related topics. No limit is imposed on the number of abstracts submitted by individuals. Abstracts are to be submitted in English only. Abstracts will only be accepted after payment of registration fees. If the abstract is subsequently not accepted for presentation, the registration fee will be refunded if cancellation is requested. Scheduling details and guidelines for the final preparation of accepted presentations will be included with the notification of acceptance. The final selection will be decided by the Organising Committee. Where appropriate, the abstracts should contain the following: Statement on the objectives of the study. Description of the methods used. Summary of the results obtained Statement on the conclusions reached. Abstract preparation and submission Abstract can only be submitted via the online submission system. Abstract should be formatted using the template in the website. Abstract must not be more than 300 words (inclusive of title and author(s) name). Title must be in bold capital letters at the top of the abstract. A maximum of 5 authors can be listed under author(s) name and institution. Presenting author s name must be underlined.
