1 MALAYSIAN SOCIETY OF CARDIOVASCULAR TECHNOLOGIST ISSUE: 2 Welcome message from Chairman of MSCVT 2012 Welcome to the MSCVT Newsletter, My dear colleagues, long after our first bulletin was published we could not manage to achieve our target in producing our bulletin twice a year as promised. Due to many factors we were not able attain the ambition; too many daily commitments may among the reasons. Many of our committee members were also has been replaced during our recent biennial meeting. We are now have more representatives from different hospitals within and outside Kuala Lumpur, this gives some advantages in some extend but it also provide challenges in term communication. I worried some of our society members may feel that our society has come to the stage of natural death after being silenced for many years but I promise you that this is not the case; in actual fact we were very busy dealing with many activities and challenges in uplifting our profession. Various initiatives have been initiated and carried out during this period, this are including developing the professional standard, finalizing the credentialing guidelines and forwarding it to higher authorities, developing a cardiovascular technology degree program with local and international universities, and also working with the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) to develop the cardiovascular technology education standard. We also have heard good news from the Ministry of Health; this is particularly for our members in the government hospitals whereby the Ministry is in the process of developing an advance diploma for allied health practitioners in cardiology field, the program is expected to be offered in Finally, my fellow members, in this bulletin we are presenting to you our society s progress since 2010 to date. I hope you will have some insight on how far our society has progressed and I hope you will be more attracted to contribute towards enhancing our society and cardiovascular technology profession at whole. 2 2 ND MSCVT SYMPOSIUM (MINI) 2011 The Malaysian Society of Cardiovascular Technologist in collaboration with National Heart Association Malaysia hosted the 2 nd MSCVT Symposium (mini) 2011 Staying Focus on the 26 th March The venue was at the Quality Hotel City Centre, Jalan Raja Laut, Kuala Lumpur. Over 150 participant s from all over Malaysia attended the symposium. The symposium was the second event organized by the MSCVT, having organized the first one at the beginning year of Tan Sri Dato Seri Dr. Robaayah Zambahari, Patron for MSCVT officially opened the symposium. The symposium Chairman by Miss Madeline Eng Jiun Yi, was held to give opportunities for the allied health profession throughout the Malaysia to concentrate more on Echocardiograph y and Exercise Stress Test which are done routinely. On that day, the programme was divided into five sessions. Each session was consisting of numerous topics from basic to the latest technology of Echocardiography and Exercise Stress Test. The speakers of each topic were the most experience Cardiovascular Technologist from all over Malaysia. Congratulation to all committees that made the symposium becomes a successful event. MSCVT BIENNIAL GENERAL MEETING The Biennial General Meeting was successfully held at level 3, meeting room 305, KL Convention Centre on Saturday 7 May It was attended by 17 registered MSCVT/NHAM members with 3 members absent with apology. There were also some members who send their proxy for the meeting. The attendance was quite unsatisfactory. For the future, MSCVT is planning to hold the meeting during any MSCVT symposium to make sure the attendance will be better. The meeting was beginning with greeting from MSCVT Chairman Mr Mohd Shafullah Mohamad Serdari. The following are the minutes: MSCVT members update: MSCVT Secretary Ms. Noraminah Aedrus reported that there are a total of 137 MSCVT members registered until Those who had already submitted their application to MSCVT has not yet registered to NHAM and it will be done later.

3 Treasurer MSCVT report: MSCVT treasurer report were given by Mr. Noor Fadzly Alias, MSCVT vice Chairperson in which the reporting mandate was given by Ms. Tay Giat Sing MSCVT treasurer. Report are as per attached MSCVT Education Update: The collaboration with MSU University on the Cardiovascular Technologist degree programme has been proposed to the Head of MSU University and still under discussion for further action. The CVT credentialing is still in the process of recognition and as mentioned by the MSCVT chairman that it is important in order to standardize in terms of future CVT education. One of the private colleges in Malaysia has created a Diploma in Cardiovascular Technology programme which has been approved by the MQA and is affecting the credibility of MSCVT. 4 CURRENT ISSUE ON MSCVT Diploma in Cardiovascular Technology which has been approved by the MQA already launched by one of the private college. Is it the course will provide the real CVT??? This is because CVT is highly specialized field and cannot be easily join with other speciality. MSCVT has sent an objection letter to MQA regarding this matter and further action needs to be taken. Credentialing of CVT; The CVT credentialing is still in the process of recognition and as mentioned by the MSCVT chairman that it is important in order to standardize in terms of future CVT education. The credentialing guidelines have been submitted to the director of National Heart Association of Malaysia (NHAM), Prof. Dr. Sim Kui Hian and also Chief Cardiology of Ministry of Health (MOH), Dato Dr Omar Ismail for approval. Dato Dr Omar Ismail and Madam Tan Yoke Kee were principally agreed to be in the credentialing committee. After this, the guidelines will be distributed to all MSCVT members to get their agreement. Therefore commitment from all MSCVT members is very much appreciated. Collaboration with Malaysian Science University (MSU); MSCVT had hold meeting with MSU two times regarding degree in Cardiovascular Technologist (CVT). The chairman of MSU was very interested to offer the CVT degree programme. Now MSCVT and MSU are in the stage of developing the syllabus. The degree is planning to be offered on The collaboration between MSCVT and Anglia Ruskin University had been stop after two years. The programme that entitled Cardiac Physiology was offered by the university but unfortunately it was approved by the MQA. The main reason behind it because the programme was offered directly from United Kingdom and no direct collaboration with MSCVT. Government of Malaysia is going to create post advance diploma for Cardiology Allied Health Practitioner. The diploma will be divided into various category including:- CVT Perfusionist Radiographer Nursing Currently it is still in the syllabus development and also plan to be launch on 2013 same as CVT degree

5 ACHIEVEMENT OF MSCVT MEMBER For our information, our MSCVT member; Ms. Yazmin Yusoff Azudin had participated in a Pedi rhythm 4 conferences at Turkey presenting the paper entitled Preservation of Left Ventricle synchrony, consideration in Paediatric Pacing. Congratulation to her because won the first prize in the free paper presentation. On the other hand, Mr. Deventhiran P.Permal, MSCVT member from IJN had presented a free paper at the National Heart Association of Malaysia (NHAM) last year. The paper entitled Echocardiographic indices for Right Ventricular (RV) assessment in patients post Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) repair with free flow Pulmonary Regurgitation (PR): A comparison study with Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR). Below is the abstract of his presentation:- *Permal D, Tamin SS, Kandavello G, Joshi S, Mahmood Z, Muhammad F, Serdari MS Background Long standing free flow PR in post TOF repair patients will cause RV dilatation and dysfunction. CMR is the current accepted standard of RV function assessment. Automated Function Imaging (AFI) a newer echocardiographic index, is a validated tool for the assessment of Left Ventricle (LV) systolic function as it tracks myocardial fiber movement. Objective To assess RV systolic function in patients post TOF repair with free flow PR using the echocardiographic parameters and to correlate the findings with CMR indices and Functional Class NYHA Methods 18 patients post TOF repair and free flow PR were retrospectively reviewed. Mean age was years and mean duration post-tof repair was years. RV AFI, other RV parameters, LV AFI were compared to CMR RV and LV indices and Functional Class NYHA. Results CMR LVEF correlated to LV AFI (r ); RV echocardiographic indices correlation with CMR RV EF is as follows : RV Isovolumic Acceleration slope (IVA) (r ); Pulse Wave Tissue Doppler Imaging s (PW TDI s ) (r ); RV index of Myocardial Performance (RIMP) (r ); RV AFI (r ); Tricuspid Annular Plane Systolic Excursion (TAPSE) (r ); RV Fractional Area Change (RV FAC) (r ); Color TDI basal RV wall peak s (Color TDI s ) (r ) and RV Basal Wall Longitudinal Peak Systolic Strain by Doppler (RVBWLPSSD) (r ); with CMR EDV index is as follows TAPSE (r ), PW TDI s (r ), RIMP (r ), RVBWLPSSD (r ), Color TDI s (r ), RV FAC(r ), RV IVA (r , RV AFI (r ); with Functional Class NYHA is as follows PW TDI s (r ), Color TDIs (r ), TAPSE (r ), RV FAC (r ), RV AFI (r ), RV IVA (r ), RVBWLPSSD (r ), RIMP (r ) Conclusion Echo RV TAPSE correlated with CMR RVEDV index with statistically significant (p= 0.024). There appears to be a correlation trend between CMR RV indices and to other echo indices RV IVA, PW TDI s, RIMP, RV AFI although statistically not significant. There may be potential use of these echo indices in serial monitoring of RV function in this group of patient. However more studies with larger number of patients are needed.
