6 IV World Congress in Emergency Medicine Symposium November 16, , 2012 Recent Advances In Medical Toxicology That You Should Know About A symposium organized by the American College of Medical Toxicology Background Poisoning continues to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Emergency physicians are the first clinicians to evaluate and manage poisoned patients presenting to health care and need to maintain a broad depth of toxicological knowledge in their practice. The management of individuals with acute toxicity, whether related to intentional self-poisoning, recreational use of drugs, or accidental/occupational exposure, is a rapidly evolving field. In this symposium, members of the American College of Medical Toxicology from around the world will highlight some of the recent advances in the field of medical toxicology, and in particular focus on changes in the management strategies for poisonings commonly seen by emergency physicians Objectives After the completion of this session, participants will be able to: Discuss the optimal management of patients with acute acetaminophen (paracetamol) poisoning Discuss the management options for patients with toxic alcohol poisoning Outline the acute and chronic problems related to the use of gamma-hydroxybuytrate and its analogues Describe the clinical effects and management of three novel psychoactive substance Explain the indications for and concerns with the use of antivenom Outline the role of naloxone and octreotide in the management of acutely poisoned patients, [?]
