3 Introduction The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences has links with universities, colleges and research institutions around the world to provide opportunities for students and staff in a range of activities. The School of Nursing & Midwifery encourages students to undertake an overseas placement as part of their study at Flinders University. This experience will broaden perspectives and provide life changing opportunities to guide an individuals personal, academic and professional journey. The School of Nursing & Midwifery will offer three destinations as part of the Study Abroad Program in 2017: China, Indonesia and Brunei. The focus of these offerings will be Complementary Therapies, Primary Health Care and Disability Studies. This year s Study Abroad Programs occur in July 2017 (China) and September 2017 (Indonesia and Brunei). Places are limited and competitive and involve an application process. Applications are invited from all 2 nd and 3 rd year Nursing Students and 3 rd Year Midwifery students (NB please check individual country options for eligibility requirements). 3

4 Educational aims The study abroad program stream aims to develop students awareness of the changing global context of health and health care delivery and to enable students to gain the knowledge, skills and disposition required to be a culturally aware practitioner. Expected learning outcomes On completion of the Study Abroad Programs students will be expected to: have an understanding of the knowledge, skills and disposition required to be a culturally aware practitioner reflect on their own and other peoples' cultural assumptions which influence the delivery of health care services be aware of other approaches to health and health care service delivery to those of their home country be aware of the intellectual knowledge traditions and approaches to learning of the host country critically examine and compare their home country health care system with that of the host country. Professional journal Students participating in the Study Abroad Program are advised to keep a professional journal to document reflections whilst on the study abroad tour. It is anticipated that professional journal entries will provide invaluable assistance when completing assignments. 4

5 Important information to consider before you apply All Midwifery and Nursing students must ensure that the Study Abroad Program does not clash with other study commitments including clinical placements and topic assignment deadlines. This will require review of and enrolment in applicable placement availabilities to accommodate the Study Abroad Program. Students may also need to negotiate additional time to compensate for time lost while overseas with Topic Coordinators. Successful applicants will be required to attend mandatory pre-departure sessions to learn about culture, their study program and travel safety. Midwifery students Hours of clinical experience on exchange may count towards a Midwifery student s overall clinical hours if an approved registered Midwife is supervising on the exchange. Nursing students Hours of clinical experience on exchange will not count towards a student s overall clinical hours. Eligibility requirements for the Study Abroad Program have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.5 or above have completed at least one year of the Undergraduate or Graduate Entry Program Bachelor of Nursing at Flinders University (36 units) be independent, mature and an ambassador for Australia and Flinders University agree to the Conditions of Participation as stipulated in the application be in good health or have a manageable health condition International students International Nursing or Midwifery students enrolled in a Flinders University degree are eligible to apply for the Study Abroad Program. International students are encouraged to undertake an exchange in a country other than their home country. 5

6 Study abroad program China: Complementary therapies A three week study tour to Flinders University partners in China - Chongqing Medical University and the Third Military Medical University (TMMU) - involving clinical and cultural activities. The tour will spend a week at TMMU followed by two weeks at Chongqing. Students will be accompanied by a staff member from the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Available to 2 nd & 3 rd year Nursing students When 5-23 July 2017 Where Chongqing Cost guide* AUD $3500 Number of students 10 Clinical placement hours 0 Chongqing Medical University (CQMU) The study group will visit CQMU affiliated hospitals and will include visits to Gerontology departments, ICU, Obstetric and Internal Medicine departments. CQMU, originally known as Chongqing Medical College, was founded in 1956 and emerged out of Shanghai First Medical College (the current day Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University). Third Military Medical University (TMMU) The study group will visit a number of TMMU affiliated hospitals to gain an insight into health care provided to communities in China. TMMU is a Chinese military institution of higher learning affiliated to the People s Liberation Army. Located in Chongqing, TMMU was founded in 1954 by a merger of the former Sixth and Seventh Medical universities. 7 Indonesia: Community health care for women, children & families A two week community based primary health care study tour. This study tour will include visits to hospitals & health clinics and will provide health education to selected groups within the Surabaya community. Students will be accompanied by a staff member from the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Available to 3 rd year Nursing & 3 rd year Midwifery students When (tentative) Sept 2017 Where Surabaya Cost guide* AUD $3500 Number of students 8 Clinical placement hours 0 University of Airlangga (UNAIR) Located in Surabaya on the island of Java, the University of Airlangga was established in 1948 as a medical school and school of dentistry and is the second oldest university in Indonesia. UNAIR hosts 13 faculties with greater than 24,000 students. 8 Brunei: Disability Studies A three week study tour with students from Disability Studies in the School of Health Sciences including visits to schools and community health clinics for children and people with disabilities such as autism. Students will be accompanied by a staff member from the School of Health Sciences. * There is some funding available from the Federal Government which will reduce costs for students. Available to 3 rd year Nursing students Brunei When (tentative) 9 Sep - 1 Oct 2017 Where Brunei Cost guide* AUD $2000 Number of students 2-4 Clinical placement hours 0 Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), Voctech Special Education School The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) is a regional intergovernmental organization established in 1965 among governments of Southeast Asian countries to promote regional cooperation in education, science and culture in the region. As an organization that has continued to nurture human capacities and explored the peoples fullest potential, the SEAMEO maintains its work and aspirations for development with peoples of the region to make lives better in quality and equity in education, preventive health education, culture and tradition, information and communication technology, languages, poverty alleviation and agriculture and natural resources. 9 Funding assistance OS-HELP Loan Scheme OS-HELP is a loan that assists eligible students to undertake some of their study overseas. Students can apply for an OS-HELP loan at any point throughout the year (within 6 months of the start of overseas travel). The University only has a limited number of OS-HELP loans available and this allocation may be exhausted prior to the end of any year. For full details and eligibility requirements: Joan Durdin Exchange Grant The School of Nursing and Midwifery has established the Joan Durdin Exchange Grant for Nursing and Midwifery students. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students to undertake part of their course of study overseas in order to enhance their Flinders University studies by providing an international perspective. 10 Travel health Staying healthy during travel is important and time lost through illness can impact on the enjoyment of travel. Students are advised to consider the need for location specific vaccinations 8-12 weeks prior to travel.
