2 Project Everest: Tech for Health Project Everest was founded by Sonia Lipski and Hari Adhikari in early Sonia and Hari had been working together as regional facilitators for Oceania and Asia out of Sydney and Kathmandu on the board of the International Young Professional Foundation. They quickly identified the need for a more structured hands -on approach to social impact and realised that more and more young people- both students and young professionals were looking for a vehicle to have a positive impact on the world. Sonia and Hari began developing a social enterprise accelerator model which would provide an agile program structure to train young people as social entrepreneurs, team them with NGOs in some of the world s least developed countries and help drive the development of social enterprises to scale social impact solutions. The name, Project Everest, refers to the everest in developing sustainable solutions to some of the world s most pressing social problems. More information available on the Project Everest website: Program Overview Spend 4 weeks in Vanuatu exploring social enterprise and its potential to address a social issue Work with local health organisations and local health stakeholders to identify emerging social enterprise and business models used to deliver and improve healthcare. Work with students from across Australia to develop a social enterprise initiative to improve access to healthcare for people living in poverty Explore opportunities for how technology can be used to deliver health information to rural areas

3 Program Details Vanuatu, a tropical paradise set in the South Pacific is one of the region s poorest countries. Many residents have limited access to basic healthcare. You will be working with local health organisations to help expand access to healthcare for people living in rural poverty by exploring opportunities for how technology (web or phone apps) can be used to deliver health information, enable collaboration between doctors and help triage patients. You will also be exploring business based approaches to develop your health solution and will receive online coaching from health entrepreneurs from Silicon Valley and New York City. You will have weekly targets to meet during your project, and will work closely with your team leader to ensure targets are met to ensure the success of the project. Accommodation will be provided in a three star hotel with twin or triple share rooms. The team will be supported by a team leader on the ground and Project Everest's Management team remotely. On arrival you will be treated to a traditional welcome Melanesian Feast in a local village. You will be welcomed by the local village Chief and learn how to prepare native products such as; using native herbs for medicine, food preservation, food roasting, hunting traps, weaving mats, hats, baskets, preparation of laplap or bunia (local dish) and discover Vanuatu's cultural and traditional lifestyle. As part of the program you will have the opportunity to meet students from the University of the South Pacific. While you will work long hours during the week, you will have weekends free to relax and explore local areas and you will also have a 4 day mid program break for individual travel from th June to undertake a longer trip.

4 Program Dates 29 June 24 July 2015 Program Cost $2200 Travel Grants BUiLD Travel grants are available for 10 students. The Travel grant amount is $1000. OS-HELP loan Extra financial support can be gained by applying for an OS-Help loan if applicable. 5 Who can apply This fantastic trip is open to 10 UTS:BUiLD students with: A desire to develop their understanding and practical skills in community development and social enterprise No prior knowledge of technology or healthcare is required however, knowledge in this area would be advantageous A current GPA of 1.5 or over An easy going, flexible and independent character with a willingness to take initiative to learn A keenness to work hard and adapt to different surroundings and work environments Strong team working skills Requirements If you are selected you must: Attend a pre departure session Represent UTS with distinction at all times during the program Submit at least two blog posts during the program to UTS to be used on the UTS:BUiLD Abroad Blog Submit a reflection piece to BUiLD on your return Complete a feedback survey on your return Next steps Complete a BUiLD application form online.
