6 GRANTS MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION PAY GRADE: CENTRE FOR EMERGING, ZOONOTIC AND PARASITIC DISEASES MEDICAL SCIENTIST (FIXED TERM CONTRACT: 12 MONTHS) (WITHDRAWN) PAYZONE DEPENDS ON EXPERIENCE CDC1017/ To provide technical and scientific support to disease surveillance, specialized diagnostics, research and teaching/training in the Centre for Emerging, Zoonotic and Parasitic Diseases (Special Bacterial Pathogens Reference Laboratory) Perform laboratory and field studies related to the brucellosis research project Optimize, validate and perform serological and molecular assays for investigation of brucellosis Maintain records, databases and documentation related to the brucellosis research project Perform routine diagnostic tests under BSL-2 and BSL-3 conditions Prepare and assist in the preparation of reports, budgets and peer-review publications Assist with teaching and training activities conducted in the Centre Actively participate in maintaining the quality management system to ensure compliance with accreditation standards Participate in Continued Professional Development (CPD) activities in compliance with HPCSA requirements Comply with policies and procedures of the NHLS as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other Biosafety and Biosecurity legislation. 7 PAY GRADE: DIVISION OF PUBLIC HEALTH SURVEILLANCE AND RESPONSE NOTIFIABLE MEDICAL CONDITIONS FIELD EPIDEMIOLOGIST X2 (FIXED TERM CONTRACT: 24 MONTHS) D1 CDC0118/ The Field Epidemiologist in the Division of Public Health Response and Surveillance, based in Sandringham will work under supervision and mentorship of the senior epidemiologist to provide epidemiology support required for optimal and efficient functionality and utility of the Notifiable Medical Conditions (NMC) National Surveillance System by the for the National Department of Health. This post will also provide epidemiology support at provincial and district levels during outbreaks of public health significance. Conduct day to day data management and cleaning in line with NMC information management guidelines and SOP s Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidelines for data management and analyses including quality assurance measures Ensure optimum data quality and timely analyses of surveillance data for early warning signs to detect outbreaks Liaise with NMC information management team and NMC surveillance nurses to ensure data queries are timeously resolved Support surveillance data analyses to provide timely and relevant epidemiological data on notifiable medical conditions for public health action Support the implementation of the new NMC national surveillance system and provide training on epidemiology concepts to all NMC users Facilitate training of DoH staff in the surveillance of NMC s and on the tools and systems thereof Provide field supervision and training on communicable diseases surveillance and outbreak investigation, and contribute to the teaching within the SAFELTP long and short courses Establish and foster good working relationships with all centres Support routine NMC surveillance evaluation to ensure optimal surveillance performance at all levels Troubleshoot and provide guidance on how to improve NMC data quality Develop and maintain routine reports targeted at different audiences utilizing the surveillance system at various levels within the public and private health sector (i.e. users, implementers, decision makers) Be actively involved in the writing and dissemination of NMC surveillance specific epidemiology reports Assist in supervision of NMC surveillance provincial teams Benchmark the NMC surveillance data analysis and reporting against international best practice to ensure alignment with national and international standards and regulations Comply with any reasonable and lawful instruction issued by the manager This post falls within the Division of Public Health Surveillance and Response and as such the field epidemiologist may be required to provide additional support for the other activities of the Division as a whole and to other units. 8 PAY GRADE: CENTRE FOR RESPIRATORY DISEASES AND MENINGITIS MATIKWANE HOSPITAL-MPUMALANGA SURVEILLANCE OFFICER (FIXED TERM CONTRACT:12 MONTHS) C2 CDC00118/ To collect clinical data from patients at designated sites for surveillance and research purposes. The surveillance officer will be involved in clinic, community and hospital-based surveillance and research for programmes that fall under CRDM. Rapidly identify surveillance cases by (1) close liaison with the clinical laboratory, (2) daily review of all laboratory records, and (3) by using other methods that have been put in place for that site Obtain informed consent and interview patients, clinicians and relatives to fulfil ethical requirements and ensure reliability of data Complete case report forms by interview and/ or record review and submit to the timeously Conduct pre- and post-test counselling for HIV testing, as specified in the relevant surveillance or research protocol Monitor the progress and outcome of patients in and out of hospital to ensure accurate data collecting and recording File surveillance and research records on-site after data collection, according to the relevant protocol Compile site statistics, as required by line manager Actively participate in and contribute to surveillance-related activities, e.g. special research studies nested within the surveillance programme, programme evaluations, etc. This may include activities such as patient enrolment into research projects, follow-up of patients, collecting specimens from patients, travel to patient homes or health facilities in the local area, obtaining information from clinics or hospital management as well as any reasonable task assigned by the line manager Assist to obtain permission an ethics approval for surveillance and research activities in the region Perform tasks assigned by the line manager, related to CRDM surveillance and research Professional or Enrolled nurse qualification SANC registration as a Professional / Enrolled Nurse Counselling course an advantage At least 3-5 years experience clinical work, post qualification 2-3 years in clinical research would be an advantage Good Communication skill Crisis-intervention skills Counselling skills Interpersonal and people skills Ability to work under pressure Attention to detail is essential Ability to maintain confidentiality.

9 CENTRE FOR EMERGING ZOONOTIC AND PARASITIC DISEASES MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST X2 (FIXED TERM CONTRACT: 12 MONTHS) PAY GRADE: PAYZONE DEPENDS ON EXPERIENCE CDC0118/ To develop, maintain and operate a malaria slide bank to support African countries moving toward malaria elimination, in the Parasitology Reference Laboratory. Manage blood sample collection and assess suitability for use Prepare, stain, quality control and label blood films as per standard operating procedures Undergo microscopist training and certification in order to accurately identify and quantitate malaria parasites Ensure that equipment is maintained according to defined SOP, prepare reagents where applicable and perform administrative and procurement duties to ensure smooth running of the lab Maintain safety standards in accordance with OHSA Conduct, process and interpret tests in terms of prescribed procedures, monitoring quality at all times Verify and report results (interpret where applicable) and ensure that reports are delivered timeously Manage data and database required for the efficient functioning of the project in order to meet statutory and clinical requirements Ensure that quality services are supplied to customers by monitoring work, staff and equipment to obtain maximized outcomes Undertake to troubleshoot where necessary Keep abreast with research in order to make informed decision on existing lab test and technique Assist with training and development of peers, medical professionals and community health care to ensure the delivery of high lab service standard Interpret laboratory findings and complete technical report Maintain records and documentation of test results and patient information Operate various analytical equipment for medical microbiological tests Monitor, calibrate and maintain devices according to relevant standards Adhere to quality assurance policies and procedures to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results Coach and provide technical support to all other staff as required Liaise with healthcare providers such as nurses, clinic staff, registrars and pathologist Assist routine reference laboratory operations.
