3 standard operating procedures for feeding arthropod colonies (e.g. hamsters, pigeons, rabbits) and cares for and feeds wild animals (e.g. rodents, bats) collected in the field for research purposes (sampling of immature tick burdens and virological/serological tests) in the Arbovirus Unit s animal rooms Accompanies entomology field teams when required to assist with field experiments and arthropod collections Assists with laboratory animal husbandry and cleaning of husbandry equipment and facilities for the Centre s Animal Caretakers, Animal Technicians/Technologists and Scientists when necessary. DIVISION FOR PUBLIC HEALTH SURVEILLANCE AND RESPONSE GAUTENG, NORTH WEST, MPUMALALANGA, LIMPOPO, KWA ZULU NATAL, NORTHERN CAPE, EASTERN CAPE FIELD EPIDEMIOLIGIST - 7 POSTS D1 0218/ The Provincial Epidemiology Team (PET) of the National Institute for Communicable Diseases () provides for the epidemiological needs of the Provincial Departments of Health in South Africa. This service focuses on utilising epidemiological methods and expertise to support provinces in meeting their responsibilities of preventing and controlling the spread of infectious diseases, in line with the International Health Regulations (IHR). The PET has been set up to provide on-site support to the all the Provincial Departments of Health and ensure that expertise available within the is made available, in a timely manner, at provincial, district and local levels of health. The main purpose of this post is to: 1. Ensure that the s core epidemiology services of surveillance, outbreak response, specialist microbiology and public health research are available to the Provincial Departments of health in a timely manner, in order to inform public health action of a consistently high quality 2. Provide a flexible expert epidemiological resource that can be deployed rapidly if required to address emerging public health threats in South Africa. 3. Ensure that outputs from s activities within its specialist Centres are effectively managed and delivered to support the needs of the provinces. Key Job Responsibilities The provincial epidemiologist in the Division of Public Health Response and Surveillance will focus on the following functional areas, Public Health Surveillance: Strengthen surveillance systems within the province, with a specific focus on Notifiable Medical Conditions (NMC) Synthesise and analyse surveillance information at provincial, district and local levels Produce routine and ad-hoc reports to identify high risk groups and inform on required public health interventions as well as quarterly surveillance bulletin for the province Disseminate surveillance reports to the Provincial Department of Health, health professionals and other stake holders at appropriate intervals Present these reports at appropriate forums (Communicable Disease Control (CDC) /Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) / Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) stewardship committees), such as monthly, quarterly and annual meetings Provide expert technical advice and assistance to relevant stakeholders in the provinces on the design, maintenance, analysis and interpretation of surveillance databases Analyse existing datasets for the production of project reports and manuscripts for publication. Outbreak response: Provide epidemiological support and expertise for the investigation of outbreaks Act as liaison between Provincial Department of Health and in outbreak investigations and implementation of public health responses Provide epidemiology support to
4 the province on the control of communicable diseases and utilise data to inform on programme performance Collaborate in outbreak report writing. Epidemiological support and priority programmes: Assist the provincial health departments in operationalising the set strategy for HIV/TB in line with the national strategic plan Facilitate access to laboratory-based data generated within the to the provinces and districts in a timely manner, to enable rapid implementation of appropriate public health interventions, support patient tracing and treatment initiation Provide local epidemiology insights to provincial public health priority programs (TB/HIV/AMR). Minimum Requirements and Key Competency Masters Degree in Public Health or MSc Epidemiology or Biostatistics t Code 8 driver s licence and own transport Field experience in infections disease epidemiology surveillance and/or research experience Experience with data analysis, public health research and report writing Experience in working in the Public Health sector Knowledge of epidemiology and statistical methods Experience in working in the Public Health sector Knowledge of and insight into laboratory practice with specific reference to the NHLS and Knowledge of statistical software package for epidemiology analysis, MS Access, Excel, STATA or SAS Leadership and management skills A good understanding of the health systems in South Africa Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal, written and presentation) ) Problem solving skills Prior knowledge of electronic registers (Tier.net, EDRWeb/ETR.Net. DIVISION OF PUBLIC HEALTH, SURVEILLANCE AND RESPONSE NORTHEN CAPE, WESTERN CAPE PROFESSIONAL NURSE NMC SURVEILLANCE OFFICER (RE-ADVERTISEMENT) 2 POSTS PAY ZONE C3 0317/ Contribute to the implementation, co-ordination, and training, mentoring and coaching for health practitioners in the private and public sector to improve the reporting of Notifiable Medical Conditions (NMC) as defined in the relevant regulations. Key Job Responsibilities Play a key role in the implementation and establishment of an integrated national notifiable medical condition (NMC) surveillance system at facility and district levels Play a pivotal role in ensuring efficient information flow in data collection, collation, analysis, interpretation and dissemination of NMC data to the public and private sector Maintain close liaison with all relevant NMC personnel such as the CDC directorate, environmental health practitioners, IPC teams, information management and disease specific programmes at district, sub-district and facility levels to enhance reporting of notifiable diseases and feedback thereof Strengthen the lab surveillance system within the provinces and facilitating linkages between private and public laboratories and health facilities Develop NMC surveillance related training materials together with the Notifiable Diseases Manager Routinely train health staff in private, public and NG sectors on the legislation aspects of NMC regulations and the process of notification Support and track performance of NMCSS process Establish efficient platforms to provide feedback to Health Care Workers and other relevant bodies Act as the liaison between local level DoHs and the and ensure resources available at the are made available to the local levels for smooth functioning of the NMC surveillance system Ensure that standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidelines for implementation and management of the NMC surveillance system are adequately disseminated to all relevant users Provide support in the implementation of such SOPs by provincial DoH at district and facility level and to laboratories and the private health sector Trouble shoot and provide guidance to various stakeholders on the implementation and use of the NMC surveillance system In close collaboration with the NMC surveillance manager, ensure optimum data quality and timely analyses of surveillance data for early warning signs to detect outbreaks.

Key Job Responsibilities Communicate effectively with national and international partners and stakeholders, including laboratories and surveillance departmental sections to ensure that surveillance and research projects are supported effectively Review clinical case report forms and data for consistency and accuracy Update the Principal Investigator/s on study progress Assist with managing and training surveillance officers and other relevant staff Assist with the surveillance and research work at local sites when surveillance officers are away Assist with site visits and surveillance audits Follow up surveillance cases telephonically Assist with organising and running surveillance officer meetings and other unit meetings Compile surveillance reports Assist with obtaining ethics approval and permissions for surveillance and research projects Advise surveillance officers with Centre for Respiratory Diseases and Respiratory Diseases surveillance ( and other projects) related queries Update and write SOPs and ensure that all surveillance staff comply therein Present surveillance finding at national and international conferences and meetings Assist in the development of targets for monitoring surveillance sites and report quarterly as to whether these targets are met or not Collate projects statistics for surveillance sites Assist in research projects ensuring quality of data Comply with any reasonable ad lawful instruction issued by the manager. Minimum Requirements and Key Competency Four-year professional qualification (Nursing, Pharmacy, Occupational therapy, Physiotherapy or other health related courses) with appropriate registration with a regulatory body Administration/ Management qualification preferable 3 years clinical experience Two (2) years clinical research and knowledge of study protocols Interest in public health work, applied epidemiology or communicable diseases Report writing skills Teaching skills Leadership skills Computer skills Communication skills Time management.
