The content will provide participants with an update on the management of several urgent clinical conditions presenting to a UCC. This year s conference, Urgent Care Vitals, will focus on urgent presentations in children, adults and elderly, with hands-on skill stations available in small group sessions to enhance your practical approach to common patient presentations. urgentcareconference PAPERLESS CONFERENCE Access to handouts will be available prior to conference. ON-SITE REGISTRATION Based on availability; is not guaranteed and a surcharge may be applied. Cash or cheque only. CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES The intent of the conference is for learners to: Increase knowledge and practical application of skills required in an urgent care setting, resulting in successful and confident patient management Increase knowledge of various presentations and how to manage them within the urgent care setting and when to refer, so that patients receive timely, appropriate treatment or referrals Enhance interprofessional relationships through shared learning and networking opportunities resulting in more collaborative practice WHO SHOULD ATTEND Physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and licensed practical nurses working in Urgent Care Centres. Physicians and nurses who work in emergency care in a rural hospital setting will also benefit. ACCREDITATION Pending

3 Urgent Care Conference Page 3 CONFERENCE PROGRAM - WORKSHOPS OPTIONAL WORKSHOP SESSIONS Workshop sessions have been identified as designed for physicians/np s or RN s/lpn s or both (multidisciplinary) Although the workshops will focus on the needs of the identified health professionals, other disciplines are welcome to attend MORNING WORKSHOP SESSIONS 1. Airway Management Skills Tony Chad, Stan Mayer, Niamh Donnelly Warner, Jill Partridge, Cathy Dobson, Heather Grant Stations focusing on common challenges of airway management, including assessment (regular versus difficult), the use of airway adjuncts and techniques to deal with airway emergencies. ALSO OFFERED IN AFTERNOON WORKSHOP SESSIONS 2. Chest Tube Skills Glenn Curtis, Darcie Facca This session will provide hands-on practice in insertion and management of chest tubes, both physician and nursing roles will be reviewed. ALSO OFFERED IN AFTERNOON WORKSHOP SESSIONS 3. Not all That Squeaks and Wheezes is Croup or Asthma Bill Sevcik Various presentations of serious pediatric respiratory conditions that can mimic croup or asthma will be discussed. 4. Early Goal Directed Therapy for Sepsis MULTIDISIPLINARY Darren Markland 5. X-Rays Not to Miss PHYSICIANS / NP s Matt Hall, Mitchel Hochman X-rays are commonly used to assist with diagnosis. Join us in discussion of common tests ordered and some results that have been missed. Focus will be on CXR (pneumothorax, hemothorax, atypical pneumonia), hand and wrist fractures, and elbows. 6. Concussion: A Personal Story Julie Fedorvich Julie will share her personal story of the journey as a trauma patient with a concussion from a bicycle crash; highlighting the many challenges to recovering physically, psychologically, cognitively and returning to nursing in Urgent Care. Teaching points include what is helpful/harmful, the importance of patient teaching and appropriate referral to a concussion specialist. 7. Intraosseous (IO) Skills Margaret Klassen, Jeannette Cochrane When you can t get an IV the next best thing is IO. This station will include discussion and hands-on IO use regarding all aspects of care; including equipment, land marking, preparing, inserting, maintaining and removing an IO infusion. ALSO OFFERED IN AFTERNOON WORKSHOP SESSIONS Who s going to crash in the middle of the night? This session will discuss a practical approach to the diagnosis, treatment and triage of a septic patient. Darren will share tips for early diagnosis and resuscitation of tricky patients as well as who to refer early and why.

Standing Room Only: Clinical Decision Making at Triage and the Bedside RN s/lpn s Margaret Dymond This presentation will focus on factors that can affect clinical decision making, and how bias (if present) can influence a patient s journey in Urgent Care. 7. Chest Tube Skills Glenn Curtis, Darcie Facca This session will provide hands on practice in insertion and management of chest tubes, both physician and nursing roles will be reviewed. ALSO OFFERED IN MORNING WORKSHOP SESSIONS Practical aspects and tips for Rapid Sequence Intubation with focus on the range of medication options, administration sequencing, and other RSI equipment adjuncts. 4. Common and Uncommon Lower Limb Injuries PHYSICIANS/NP s Stephen Hunt This didactic session will focus on common lower limb injuries and approaches to diagnosing less common but related problems. Examples include operative versus nonoperative achilles tendons, lis frac fractures, ATFL tears and patellar dislocations.
