2 TCRHCC Trains with Advanced Simulator in Emergencies The Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation (TCRHCC) Nursing and Clinical Education Department celebrated the opening of the new Clinical Simulation Center. The Clinical Simulation Center provides a centralized, hands-on experience for health education and training for the Medical Team at TCRHCC. This new Center, located on the Hospital campus, will play an integral role in training clinical staff members to respond to a number of situations that arise in the hospital setting. Simulation is a teaching strategy that mimics real-life situations, says Mildred Garcia, RN, Clinical Education Director and Director of the Simulation Center. By engaging staff in realistic situations, they develop clinical, behavioral and team skills in a safe and organized manner. The Clinical Simulation Center is comprised of mock clinical settings made to replicate the same environment that clinicians practice in at the Hospital. Training sessions will cover a wide range of clinical scenarios ranging from the Neonate to Adult that covers basic care through the critical and complex patient condition., says Garcia. Garcia added technical skills can be practiced and clinical knowledge revised, but training sessions can also emphasise nontechnical skills or human factors such as situational awareness, decision making, task management, team working, communication skills and calmness under pressure. Bringing the Laerdal SimMan offers TCRHCC the ability to provide realistic and challenging scenario based simulation to test learners critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills. With realistic anatomy and accurate clinical functionality, SimMan provides numerous educational opportunities for healthcare professionals. Simulation training at TCRHCC is critical in helping staff practice Page 2 working together as a team, said Garcia. The simulation program has such a clear and vital purpose: to ultimately improve the safety and outcomes of all TCRHCC patients.

4 TCRHCC Public Health Nursing Christmas Gift Giving to Families Debbie, RN, TCRHCC Public Health Nurse, stands outside the home of her patient after delivering wrapped gifts, food and wood donated by TCRHCC staff. The Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation (TCRHCC) Public Health Nursing (PHN) Team provided Christmas gifts to families in December The PHN Department selected families throughout the Tuba City Service Unit and Moencopi community. We would like to extend our appreciation to the Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation departments and employees that contributed to the Christmas Giving Project, said Dollie Smallcanyon, MSN, RN, Chief Community Health Services Officer. This year, TCRHCC employees sponsored 21 families from the TCRHCC service area. Families received items such as; food, clothing, household necessities, and wood. The Christmas gifts were delivered by the Public Health Nursing Department and Navajo Nation Community Health Representatives (CHR) before the Christmas holiday. This was a big project that was successfully completed with your support and generosity to our community. We appreciate your time and thoughtful gifts in supporting our local families, said Smallcanyon. The PHN staff expressed that a lot of families wanted to wait to open their gifts; this is all they would be receiving on Christmas day. One patient with limited transportation received household necessities. She said it was exactly what she needed. She was also happy about the food because she had little food. TCRHCC PHN staff expressed, the generous donation may seem small, but to someone in need, this tiny act of kindness is greatly appreciated. Continue on page 5. Page 4
5 A wood vendor from Tuba City donated his time to help deliver the purchased wood to patients with the TCRHCC Public Health Nursing staff. The families who received a cord of wood were thankful and thanked the TCRHCC staff. Public Health Nursing Christmas Gift Giving to Families, Cont. from page 4. It was a special time when the PHN staff surprised one grandmother with Christmas gifts who was home with here grandkids. She was so overwhelmed with emotion and the kids faces lit up. Grandma said, she didn t have enough money to provide a Christmas this year, so we decided not to put up any Christmas decorations. The kids were so excited they asked their grandma if they could put up the Christmas tree now that they had presents to put under it. The Christmas gifts would be their Christmas this year. The PHN Department also send a sincer Thank You to the local wood vendors for delivering the larger load of wood to the families home. Without you and your generous hearts none of this would have been possible. We would like to say a special thanks to the following: OB Unit Sarah Barela and Family Clinical Education Michelle Smith-Sample Lab Department Mobile Health Department ACU Department Clinical Services Pediatrics Department ICU Department Bill Dey, CQO Office PCU Department Outpatient Department Surgical Services Emergency Department Nursing Administration Cardio-Pulmonary Department Page 5

8 FITNESS FIRST: WALKING From LT Patrick Wheeler,/USPHS, RN, TCRHCC Employee Health Nurse, who has selected this article for the employees and community. If you are looking for an easy and inexpensive way to stay healthy or lose weight, you need nothing more than your own two feet. Walking is an ideal form of exercise it s free, and you can do it almost anytime and anywhere. Walking is also a great way to maintain a healthy weight or to shed those extra pounds. The First Step: Good Shoes Whether you walk outdoors, on a treadmill or at the local mall, you will want to invest in a good pair of walking shoes. Walking shoes are designed to give you the flexibility, support and proper push off needed for walking. Everyone s feet are different, but look for shoes that are light, flexible and immediately feel comfortable. Walking shoes should not require a breaking in period. Setting the Pace You can walk to maintain your health or as part of a weight-loss program. To get moving, experts advise beginners to start with a 15- or 30-minute walk daily, adding five or 10 minutes to the walking session time per week. More specifically: To maintain your health, walk 30 minutes a day most days of the week at a talking pace, which means you are able to carry on a conversation comfortably while walking. If you are walking for weight loss, walk 45 to 60 minutes a day at a medium to fast pace. In addition, do not skip more than two days per week. For aerobic and cardiovascular fitness, walk 20 minutes at a very fast pace (you should be breathing hard), three to four days a week. After walking, gentle stretching can help keep your muscles from being sore. It is also wise to warm up before walking fast or going a long distance. Cautions Make sure to be safe while walking outside: Always walk on sidewalks (or on the left side of the street facing traffic if there are no sidewalks). Be aware of traffic. Carry identification and your cellphone in case of emergencies. In the evening hours, wear reflective gear and/or carry a flashlight in front of you. Going the Distance Once you get started, you will want to stay motivated. Consider finding a walking friend, joining a walking club or registering for a challenging walking event. Remember that you will not notice immediate physical changes to your body, but by adding walking and a healthy diet to your daily routine, it won t be long before you look and feel better. Note: Before beginning any walking program, consider discussing your exercise plans with your doctor, particularly if you have health issues such as diabetes.
