2 Increase in Pertussis (whooping cough) reported in Tuba City Service Areas Tuba City, AZ Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation (TCRHCC) has confirmed an increase in Pertussis (whooping cough) illness in the Tuba City Service areas. As a result, TCRHCC is reminding individuals of the importance of vaccinations for both children and adults. Early symptoms of pertussis are mild and coldlike, including runny nose, sneezing and coughing that becomes more persistent. Pertussis is easily spread when an infected person coughs. It can cause spells of violent coughing and gasping for breath in young children and can last for weeks. Children often make a whooping noise when they breathe. This disease is most serious for babies under a year old, immunocompromised individuals and pregnant women. Adults who get pertussis often have a cough, but don t whoop. Unfortunately, many adults with pertussis are not treated and pass this disease on to others, possibly young children. Any adults or children who have a cough that has lasted for over 14 days should be evaluated by their health care provider, especially if the illness includes coughing fits, vomiting after coughing, or whooping. Pertussis is easily spread from: Prolonged face-to-face contact within 3 feet of an infected person Direct contact with secretions from the cough, nose or mouth Sharing the same confined space with an infected person for more than an hour Antibiotics are available to treat the infection and prevent further spreads of the disease. Immunization is extremely important for the prevention and control of pertussis in our communities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend the DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis) vaccine for infants and children through age six. Tdap vaccinations, which contain protection against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, are recommended for preteens, teens and adults and should be given to 7 10 year olds who are not fully vaccinated against the illness. Pertussis vaccinations are required by the State of Arizona for school attendance. If going to the healthcare facility and you are coughing, PLEASE wear a mask. For further information, you can call Elfreida Bizaholoni, RN, Infection Prevention Nurse, TCRHCC ; or Dr. Hu or Dr. Oski at TCRHCC Pediatric Clinic at STOP To our guests, patients, & staff: NO children under 12 years of age are allowed to visit the OB ward and Pediatrics ward, where our smallest patients are cared for, during the winter RSV and influenza season. 5 Health Care Career Day at TCRHCC Tuba City, AZ On December 1, 2017, the Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation (TCRHCC) hosted Sinagua Middle School-Indian Education Support Program. Students were invited to the medical center for a Health Care Career Day. The event put on by the TCRHCC Recruitment and Retention gives students the opportunity to learn about careers that include up to 34 clinical and non-clinical careers available at a TCRHCC medical center. The purpose of the day is to get students thinking about health care related careers and, more specifically, in TCRHCC health care at a medical center close to home. Throughout the year, TCRHCC has welcomed and put on Career Day for students, and each year, the number of schools wanting to participate continues to grow. 6 Public Health Nursing The Gingerbread Project TCRHCC employees Rajean Victor (PHN), Louise Jackson (PHN) and Sarah Barela (OB unit) pose for a quick picture while delivering Christmas gifts in the community. Public Health Nursing team member, Louise Jackson, HT helps an elder open her Christmas gifts. Every year, the Public Health Nursing Department selects local families to receive some holiday cheer from sponsoring departments at the Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation. This year was no different, 12 families and 8 individuals were selected from communities within the Tuba City service area. 18 departments and 10 employees came together and generously donated towards helping these families have a happy holiday season. Many employees were also able to accompany the Public Health Nursing team in delivering the gifts to the families. This year we delivered: clothes, food, toys, household items, 5 cords of wood, 9 bags of coal, 4 new beds, 1 dining room table, and. 1 outhouse! The Public Health Nursing department would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all those who generously gave this year! The donations far exceeded what we expected to give and made a significant impact on the individuals who received the gifts! We look forward to being able to do this again next year, in partnership with our colleagues in 2018! Cheryl Luna, PHN helps to deliver Christmas gifts in the community. ED Physicians Ken Bernard, Alycia Valente, her husband Kyle (far right), and Wiley Thuet help to build an outhouse in Cameron. Members of TCRHCC Emergency Department helped to deliver gifts in Gap community. Page 6 An elder collects Christmas gifts on their new dining room table to show her grandchildren.
