1 Master Syllabus Date Revised: Minor Change May 26, 2016 Prepared by: Course Title: Rhonda Roxanne Rash, Ed.D Clinical Lab I: Nursing Fundamentals Course Number: NUR 114 Lecture Hours: 0 Laboratory Hours: 90 Course Contact Hours: 90 Credit Hours: 2 Pre-requisites: MAT 097, EGL 101, BIO 208/218 Co-requisites: NUR 101, NUR 104 Course Description: Clinical Lab I: Nursing Fundamentals is the college/clinical laboratory that provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate safe and competent psychomotor and communication skills necessary for client care. The student will be expected to use the nursing process and the Neuman Systems Model when demonstrating their nursing skills. The demonstration of client care is based upon theoretical knowledge acquired from the co-requisite courses. At Cecil College, for all credit courses, students are expected to spend a minimum of 45 hours of 50 minutes each of combined instructional time and related coursework time per credit hour. For this course, the following applies: 2 Credit Course Number of Hours Total hours of direct instruction and/or outof-class student work required 120 Lab Activities 90 Out-of-Class Student Work 30
2 NUR 114 is a 2 credit hour clinical/lab course. The student should expect to spend 90 hours in class and/or on online modules, and a minimum of an additional 30 hours outside of class. 4 Outcomes 1. Be able to apply the Neuman Systems Model and to use the nursing process in order to demonstrate competency and critical thinking in providing client care appropriate for a Level I student. Outcomes A, B, F Indicators 1.1 Complete all core components and competencies identified in the Level I Clinical Assessment Tool 1.2 Successfully complete the Long Term Care clinical rotation. 1.3 Successfully complete all skill test-outs in the college-lab setting 1.4 Participate in the cumulative simulation test-out. Demonstrate an understanding of the NLN competency of professional identity. Outcomes A, B, C, F, G 2.1 Identify the roles and responsibilities of the nurse. 2.2 Identify own responsibility as a member of a health care profession. 2.3 Begin to assess own performance. 2.4 Identify new learning experiences. 2.5 Accept responsibility of the nurse. 2.6 Recognize need for selfevaluation. 2.7 Begin to identify own strengths and weaknesses. 2.8 Identify and use facilitative communication techniques when collecting data. 2.9 Identify the characteristics of one s own communication Accurately report and record data collected and care given according to the protocol of the institution involved. 2.2 Student will document medication administration as soon as possible after giving a medication.

Demonstrate an understanding of the NLN competency of nursing judgment at a level appropriate for a beginning level nursing student. Outcomes A, B, C, D, F, G Indicators 3.1 Utilize therapeutic and facilitative communication techniques when providing care for aged clients. 3.2 With guidance, identify the teaching needs for health maintenance of aged adults. 3.3 Recognize the value and methods of meeting basic needs related to activities of daily living when providing care for aged adult clients. 4.1Demonstrate safety in performing basic therapeutic and preventive nursing measures in clinical and/or simulated settings directed toward influencing the aged adult client's response to identified stressors. 4.2 Perform nursing measures to promote optimal adaptation to simple stressors for aged clients. 4.3 Collect data relevant to each of the five NSM variables. Identify stressors related to adl s in the care of the aged adult client. 4.4 Plan appropriate nursing interventions for identified stressors. 4.5 Participate in evaluation of nursing care given. 4.6 Identify how to organize tasks for efficient client care. Assessment Types Sample Assessment 3.1 Student will use broad openings when obtaining client information. 4.2 Student will complete a respiratory assessment on a clinical client.

Outcomes A, B, C, F, G Indicators 5.1Collaborate with the health care team to identify essential data to report to support the prioritization and delivery of nursing care. 5.2With guidance recognizes the concept of evidence-based nursing practice and applies it to a patient care situation.
