HOW DO NURSING STUDENTS PERCEIVE THE NOTION OF EHR? AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION Parisis GALLOS, Stelios DASKALAKIS, Maria KATHARAKI*, Joseph LIASKOS and John MANTAS Health Informa.cs Laboratory, Faculty of Nursing, *Faculty of Economics, Quan.ta.ve Methods Na.onal and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece Oral presentafon at MIE 2011 Presenter: Parisis Gallos 30 August 2011, Oslo, Norway
IntroducFon A variety of studies pinpoint a shi? towards EHR implementa#ons in several countries over the last years, results on EHR adop0on and use are not always encouraging. In addi#on, past research highlights the importance of nurses in the context of adop#on and use of EHR systems Consequently, nursing educa#on plays a key role for crea#ng awareness and apprecia#on of such concepts The research aim of this paper is: To inves#gate the understanding and percep#ons of Electronic Health Record (EHR) at an educa#onal nursing level. Parisis Gallos - MIE 2011, Oslo, Norway 2
Methods An empirical study, among nursing students at the Faculty of Nursing of the Na#onal and Kapodistrian University of Athens, was conducted A research framework was u#lized, in the basis of the InnovaFon Diffusion Theory (IDT) (Rogers, 1995) along with the influence of past research works (Peslak et. al, 2010; Gibson et. al, 2009) Based on the idea to inves#gate the EHR as a technology differen#a#ng solu#on, compared with previous tradi#onal prac#ces in this field Certain adjustments were applied in order to reflect the context and the hypothe#cal nature of the study Parisis Gallos - MIE 2011, Oslo, Norway 3
Methods The following Hypotheses were inves#gated: H1: How Rela#ve advantage posi#ve affects the A^tude towards Use H2: How Compa#bility posi#ve affects the A^tude towards Use H3: How Ease of Use posi#ve affects the A^tude towards Use H4: How Trialability posi#ve affects the A^tude towards Use H5: How Observability posi#ve affects the A^tude towards Use Parisis Gallos - MIE 2011, Oslo, Norway 4
Methods Procedure and Measures A study ques#onnaire was formulated With as much standardized items as possible, adopted from previous research works Ques#ons were translated into Greek and refinements were made in order to reflect the study context and language, where applicable. All items followed a 7- Likert scale from strongly disagree to strongly agree along with a sec#on for do not know/do not answer. Parisis Gallos - MIE 2011, Oslo, Norway 5
Methods Sample selecfon & CharacterisFcs The ques#onnaire was distributed to third- year nursing undergraduates of the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Athens, Greece. Responders had a certain experience with specific Health Informa#cs modules (Introduc#on to Informa#cs, Health informa#cs, Hospital Informa#on Systems, Biomedical Informa#cs) thus assumed to have sufficient theore#cal background in EHR concept and technologies Par#cipa#on was anonymous in order to preserve confiden#ality Data Analysis approach Demographic sta#s#cs with SPSS so?ware package Par#al Least Squares path modeling with the SmartPLS 2.0 M3 so?ware package Parisis Gallos - MIE 2011, Oslo, Norway 6
Results Demographics A total of 90 valid ques#onnaires were completed (18 male and 72 female par#cipants). 100% of the sample had alended the Health informa#cs module 73.3% of the sample had alended the Introduc#on to Informa#cs module 82.2% of the sample had alended the Hospital Informa#on Systems module 98.9% of the sample had alended the Biomedical Informa#cs module Parisis Gallos - MIE 2011, Oslo, Norway 7
Results ParFal least squares analysis Inves#ga#on of the measurement and the structural model. Concerning the measurement model, individual item loadings, internal consistency, convergent validity and discriminant validity were inves#gated. The structural model was inves#gated by applying a bootstrapping technique (with 1000 resamples) and three sta#s#cally significant levels: p<0.05(*), p<0.01(**) and p<0.001(***), based on a two- tail test. Parisis Gallos - MIE 2011, Oslo, Norway 8
Results Relative Advantage Compatibility 0.347*** Ease of Use 0.246* Attitude Towards Use R Trialability 0.365*** Observability Results of the structural model (significance at p<0.05 level) (Dotted lines emphasize the hypotheses that were not confirmed) Parisis Gallos - MIE 2011, Oslo, Norway 9
Discussion The results of the structural model highlight the very strong significant effects of relafve advantage (H1 at p<0.001) and observability (H5 at p<0.001) to a^tude towards using an EHR along with the significant effect of perceived ease of use (H3 at p<0.05) to the dimension of a^tude towards use. Study findings iden#fy a posi#ve a^tude of students towards EHR which may be explained by their experience and exposure with technology from a young age, thus being more posi#ve in adop#ng technology- oriented ideas. The non- significant effect of trialability and compa#bility may be interpreted in the context of the students limited experience in terms of an actual EHR system use Parisis Gallos - MIE 2011, Oslo, Norway 10
LimitaFons & Future Work Study LimitaFons Nursing students, in this study, did not have an actual/real- world experience of an EHR implementa#on The study findings are restricted within a limited theore#cal and contextual scope Future Work A more detailed analysis in real healthcare environments that have deployed and operate EHR systems may be conducted, with a clear separa#on of healthcare professional groups that have an actual experience with such computerized environments. Parisis Gallos - MIE 2011, Oslo, Norway 11
Conclusions The present study alempted to shed light in health informa#cs aspects in rela#on to nursing science, with regard to EHR at the educa#onal level The study results imprint the percep#ons of nursing students with respect to EHR, and their apprecia#on of its poten#al to healthcare services Assessments of this kind may be applied at a pre- professional level in order to record the dominant trends and opinions for a variety of Health Informa#cs conceptual domains in general Parisis Gallos - MIE 2011, Oslo, Norway 12
Thank you! Parisis Gallos - MIE 2011, Oslo, Norway 13
