1 A newsletter for Orange Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers February 2015 Scott Batulis President & CEO From The President & CEO I am pleased to announce that Orange Regional has submitted a Certificate of Need application to the New York State Department of Health to construct a new 153,000 square-foot outpatient medical office building (MOB) and a 26,000 square-foot cancer center on our main campus. Our plan is to relocate most existing outpatient services currently provided at other off-campus locations to these new state-of-the-art buildings. We are still in the process of getting final approval and securing financing for the project. If all goes as planned, we will start construction this spring and complete the project in the fall of In March, we will begin doing some preliminary site work on the North side of the campus to make room for more parking. Specifically, Orange Regional is constructing: 1) an entirely new outpatient MOB that will be connected to the existing hospital s two-story administration building and 2) a dedicated cancer center that will include renovation of existing space and new construction. The buildings will be separate, yet located immediately adjacent to each other on the northern side of our hospital. We will also add 807 parking spaces and expand the road which encircles the hospital campus. The proposed MOB will be a five-story, state-of-the-art facility. The first two floors will house all relocated outpatient diagnostic imaging services including 64 Slice CT, Wide Bore MRI, 3D Mammography, Digital X-ray, Ultrasound, EKG, Nuclear Medicine, PET/CT Scan and Fluoroscopy as well as four outpatient operating rooms, five procedure rooms, a primary care office, cardiac rehabilitation, a diabetes center, lab services, central registration, medical school space, pre-surgical testing, a retail pharmacy, a bistro and a community health resource center. Floors three to five will be occupied by physician offices affiliated with Orange Regional Medical Group which presently employs 36 physicians and mid-level providers. The proposed cancer center will combine existing outpatient cancer therapy services including radiation oncology and infusion, the breast center, along with oncology exam rooms and associated nursing and care provider stations into a 26,000 square foot, single-story facility attached to the main hospital. About 15,000 square feet of the existing administration building will be renovated and another 11,000 square feet of space will be added on as new construction. The cost-savings related to the MOB and cancer center construction are significant. By removing lease obligations, the hospital anticipates saving up to $4 million annually. I will update you on the progress of this project as new and important information develops. Sincerely, Scott Batulis, President & CEO Rendering of proposed expansion

2 Update Medical Group Welcome Physician Assistants Welcome Physician Assistants Erica Nicholson and Daphne Garcia. Both Erica and Daphne are physician assistants within the General Acute Care Surgery and Trauma Department. They will primarily handle new consultations, trauma consultations, daily patient rounds and care management as well as assisting in the Operating Room. Erica Nicholson is a graduate of Pace University with a Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Kean University. She is a member of American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) and New York State Society of Physician Assistants (NYSSPA). Daphne Garcia is a graduate of Binghamton University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biochemistry. Most recently she held positions as a physician assistant in Surgery at Rockland Thoracic and a physician assistant in the Department of Emergency Medicine at St. Luke s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, as well as a physician assistant in Department of Thoracic Surgery at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City. For more information or to contact Erica or Daphne, please call the General Acute Care Surgery and Trauma Department Office at Q&A Colleen Q&A with Colleen Minnock, MSN, FNP-BC Q. What is a nurse practitioner? A. For nearly half a century, nurse practitioners have provided primary, acute and specialty health care and today are playing an increasingly important role as primary care givers for millions of Americans nationwide. Holding advanced degrees and completing extensive acute and specialty care preparation, nurse practitioners combine clinical expertise in diagnosing and treating health conditions with an added emphasis on disease prevention and health management to assess patients, order and interpret diagnostic tests, make diagnoses and initiate and manage treatment plans, including prescribing medications. Q. What is the difference between a physician and a nurse practitioner? A. The short answer is that doctors study diseases and how to cure them while nurses and nurse practitioners study people and how to heal them. Physicians study a medical model in school which is focused on cure, while nurse practitioners and nurses study a nursing model which is based on care. A more detailed answer is that a physician is a person with formal education and training in medicine, i.e. the treatment of diseases using drugs, procedures and/or surgery. A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse with formal education in the care of the sick plus advanced education and training in the diagnosis, treatment and management of common and chronic illnesses. Physicians and nurse practitioners are similar in that both diagnose, treat and manage acute and chronic diseases, order and interpret labs and diagnostic tests and prescribe medications. To make an appointment or to reach Colleen, contact the Primary Care office at or at cminnock@ormc.org

3 Patient Family Advisory Council Through the executive leadership of Joanne Ritter-Teitel and Sandra Iberger, Orange Regional is in the first phase of creating a Patient Family Advisory Council (PFAC). This council will partner patients and families with members of the healthcare team to provide guidance on how to improve the patient and family experience at our hospital. The rewards of bringing PFAC to the organization will be many, including meeting new friends, hearing the opinions of others and making an impact on the care we provide to our patients. It s an opportunity to make a difference and to improve patient satisfaction. We look forward to launching the first council meeting this spring and working together to improve the health of our community by providing exceptional healthcare. For more information, contact Patient Advocate, Ebony Nunez, at or enunez@ormc.org. Fundraising For The 2015 Heart Walk Fun! A Message From Our Director of Pediatric Subspecialty Services As the Pediatric Program at Orange Regional Medical Center enters its second year, we remain poised to expand on a solid foundation of achievements from year one. Together, the Orange Regional community opened the region s first brand-new pediatric emergency room, upgraded our pediatric surgical services, established a pediatric hospitalist and child life service and expanded our pediatric subspecialty team. This has resulted in an increase of approximately 40 percent children served throughout the emergency department, has increased our pediatric inpatient volumes and decreased pediatric transfers outside the community. Orange Regional is now poised to become one of the Hudson Valley s strongest community-based pediatric programs. We will set up the infrastructure for a pediatric intensive care service, beginning with a pediatric-dedicated telemetry facility. We will also enrich our pediatric emergency department by adding pediatricians who specialize in emergency medicine. It is clear that we have just begun, but we remain dedicated to our community s children. With your support, oh the places we will go! Eric D. The goal of this campaign is $2.1 million. To date we have raised just over $1.9 million. Thank you to the Orange Regional employees who have supported this campaign in a meaningful way.

6 An article on the appointment of Jessica Gerlach to Manager of Clinical Research and Oncology Community Outreach for the Spagnoli Family Cancer Center appeared in the January 6, 2015 online edition of the Times Herald-Record. An article in the December issue of Hospital Newspaper featured Orange Regional s Hallway of Heroes display in honor of Veteran s Day. C oming Up Daisies Congratulations to Emergency Department Nurse Sionnie LeBlanc, Orange Regional s most recent recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Sionnie received the DAISY Award for demonstrating caring and compassion through her interactions with her patients as well as her co-workers. Each day Sionnie is charge nurse, she makes sure she reaches each and every staff member and thanks them for a job well done. She encourages the staff to push forward when it gets tough and has championed Breast Cancer Walk fundraising for the department with bake sales, activities and soliciting donations with her infectious smile. Sionnie s interactions with patients are commendable and her attention to detail is impeccable as she is spot on with her care and has an abundance of knowledge and expertise to offer. I look forward to seeing her each time I come on shift, said nominator Teressa Bianchi. Sionnie is an asset to the ER team and the patients who pass through our department. There are many more great things I can say about Sionnie as she is an excellent nurse and role model who exemplifies what nursing is all about. 7 Step Into Fitness Scott Batulis and Rosemary Baczewski challenged each other to a plank-off at the graduation ceremony. What we did not expect, and what we actually did receive, is a tremendous sense of accomplishment and camaraderie that developed within the group we sweated, and laughed our way to our (individual) health and wellness goals while developing connections and friendships that will last well beyond the pilot... PRICELESS! Rose Baczewski Members of the first Step Into Fitness pilot group. We all 'stepped into' fitness as individuals, but came out as a team. Achieving personal wellness is not only about feeling well but living well and we are doing that together. Joanne Sturans In our busy lives, there are so many reasons not to take the time to be fit. Having the classes right here at ORMC made it incredibly convenient and I look forward to seeing all of my colleagues at each class to inspire me! Regina Toomey Bueno In an effort to encourage and support a healthy lifestyle, Orange Regional s Live Well Be Well Employee Wellness Program launched a pilot program in November called Step Into Fitness. Championed by senior leaders Rosemary Baczewski, Dr. Jim Oxley and Joanne Sturans, Step Into Fitness lasted for 6 weeks and brought cardio and calisthenics, toning and sculpting and endurance training to the main campus. Led by Certified Trainer and owner of Studio Ayo Fitness Center, Damola Akinyemi, the Monday through Friday sessions brought 26 staff members together to sweat it out for an hour each session. Individual body measurements were recorded before and after the start of the program. Participants were coached and trained in proper technique for strength and exercise workouts; each supported and encouraged their fellow fitness friends to endure the workout challenge; nutritional guidelines and tips were offered and access to a full service fitness studio with diverse classes was available to each member of the group. However, the overall bonding, team building and camaraderie of the group cannot be understated. Overall, the initial program was a huge success with many participants experiencing amazing results. Not only do I feel better, but I have made many new friends! Justine Geisler I learned new KNOWLEDGE about health and fitness and gained the WISDOM to apply it! Laura King The support and relationship building with my co-workers made every muscle ache, but made the pain bearable. Karin Kuhens If you are interested in participating in the next fitness program please contact Joanne Sturans at jsturans@ormc.org or Rose Baczewski at rbaczewski@ormc.org for more information.
