Welcome to 2012! It has started out fast and furious at MHLC. Snow and winter have finally caught up to us as have the illnesses of winter. We were on the verge of having all of our beds full last week. We normally staff for 7 9 inpatients per day and had 22 inpatients. Everyone became very creative in the ways that they accommodate that increase in census. Congratulations to all departments and our providers for meeting the challenge and giving the best possible care The first Club Scrub session was held Wed. Jan 25th. This is Club Scrub s 3rd year and we added an another school this year. We now have 6 students coming from Benton along with 8 Argyle students, 6 Belmont students, 12 Darlington students and 7 Shullsburg students for a total of 39. Rhonda Roelli, Terri Vieth and Terra Hendrickson presented the Nursing Session by doing blood to our patients. If you look in our back yard you will see that we are drilling an emergency well. This was made possible by the state hospital preparedness program through grants available from the Federal government. The government feels strongly that hospitals should be prepared to function on their own without outside assistance for a minimum of 96 hours. An emergency water system is part of the program s plan. The two most common reasons for water sugar testing, showing how to mix medications, having the students practice giving injections into oranges and a hand washing exercise. The students really enjoyed the session. Thank you to eve- shutdowns are contamination of the city system or disruption of the city water system. The most common causes would be bioterrorism or weather conditions. In our case the most common cause would be water disruption due to weather. The project will be complete by the end of February and we will receive our grant monies which pay 100% of the well and associated costs. Dr. Karl Menninger Welcome Lorri... MHLC is welcoming three employees this month. Lorri Cwynar will be joining the MHLC staff as part-time housekeeper working the 6:30 to 8:30 evening shift. Lorri and her husband Dale live in the Argyle area with their two children Blake and Grace. Together Welcome Joni... Joni Wedig is the new Laboratory Manager here at MHLC. She is familiar to the MHLC family as she has taken prn call for the lab at MHLC for a number of years. Joni s previous employment includes SWTC Medical Laboratory Technician faculty and United Clinical Labs in they own and operate the Nature s Gifts Greenhouse. Lorri is a very active MHLC Auxiliary member and presently is the vice-president. In her free time she enjoys gardening. Welcome to MHLC Lorri, we look forward to working with you. Dubuque. Joni and her husband Mike live in Darlington and have four daughters, Abby, Olivia, Alison and Isabel. When Joni is not working or spending time with her family she enjoys gardening and cooking. St. Augustine Bruce Bartels is from the Platteville area and will be working here at MHLC as a CRNA alternating his time with Nick Zuberbuhler. Bruce completed his CRNA schooling at Mayo Clinic. Bruce and his wife Sharon have two daughters and one son. His hobbies include following his kids various sports events, woodworking and puttering in the shed. He also has two Newfoundlands dogs and has worked on certification for water rescue dogs. Welcome Bruce! Blood Drive... The January Blood Drive was held on Monday, Jan 30th and we exceeded our goal with 26 people donating and 21 units being collected. Gold Buying Event... On Thursday, Jan 26th the Cathy Lee Nursing Scholarship held a Gold Buying Fundraiser. We also had 5 first time donors. Thank you to everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to donate. Also thanks to Fourteen people brought their items in and $212 was the amount donated to the the Dietary Dept for providing the snacks. Volunteer blood donors provide a critical resource for patients and hospitals in our community. Scholarship Fund from Purple Creek. Thank you everyone who supported the fundraiser.

The bright, yellow daffodil is the American Cancer Society s symbol of hope in the fight against cancer. Because the American Cancer Society's daffodils are fresh and colorful, Daffodils Days has become a successful fundraiser in the upper Midwest, where winters can be long, unpredictable, and a sign of spring is always welcome! Daffodil orders are now available in the dining room through February 13th. Your beautiful orders will be delivered the week of March 7th with all proceeds benefiting our Relay for Life. If our sales exceed $500, our entry fee for our Relay Team will be waived. Thank you for your support Relay For Life will be held at the Fairgrounds on June 16th. Around MHLC Mary Roelli has worked at Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County since In her 32 years here she has been the OR manager and in 2009 she also became the ER manager. She has also helped out in Case Management, Utilization Review and other side jobs too numerous to mention. Mary feels the biggest changes since starting here are Electronic Health Records. She states Patient care is universal-how we accomplish it now involves more technology EHR and otherwise. Mary and her husband, Greg of 38 years have two daughters and one son. They also have four granddaughters and another grandchild on the way. Mary loves to travel, stating she wants to see how the other half lives. She also likes being at home to garden, read, sew, and rubber stamp. She also likes to take long walks on lonely country roads to clear the cobwebs from her brain.
