1 Service-Learning Handout Raasch, Rodney Developmental Psychology: Lifespan PSYC , 01, 02 Spring America Reads and Counts Agency Description: America Reads and Counts is a tutoring program in which Normandale students work within the Bloomington Public School District to help elementary and middle school children improve their reading and math skills. Position Description: Normandale students tutor Bloomington Public School children in grades K-12 in reading or math. Tutors spend 2-4 hours a week during a set time at a Bloomington school, tutoring the student in math or reading. Most tutors work one-on-one with students or will help a number of students in a classroom. Some tutors assist in an after-school homework help program. Tutoring positions are generally between the hours of 7:45 am and 7:30 pm Monday-Thursday and 7:45 am-3:15 pm Fridays. We do our best to work around your schedule when we place you with a classroom. You will need your own transportation to and from the school; several schools are on the bus line. You must also pass a background check (no cost to you). Tutoring in this position comes with many rewards, offering each tutor a chance to make a difference in a child's life, gain valuable skills, and build their resume. While previous tutoring experience is helpful, it is not required to apply. New tutors attend a required training session. The program seeks applicants with the desire to help a child succeed and the energy and time it takes to make this commitment. Contact the Center for Experiential Education with any questions: (952) or servicelearning@normandale.edu Ginew Golden Eagles Agency Description: The Ginew Golden Eagle program is an after school prevention program serving at-risk Native American Indian youth ages 5-18 in South Minneapolis. The goal of the program is to help Native American Indian youth develop and strengthen skills they need to make positive life choices and live healthy lifestyles. Ginew Golden Eagles is located in the Minneapolis American Indian Center at 1530 E Franklin Ave Minneapolis, MN Position Description: Volunteers assist with the after school prevention program including helping with homework during the Indian Youth Study Time and helping kids get involved with sports during the recreation time. Volunteers also help prepare meals occasionally and assist with cultural programs. The after school program is Mondays through Thursdays at the following times: Monday 5:00-7:30 pm (8-10 year olds), Tuesday 5:00-7:00 pm (5-7 year olds), Wednesday and Thursdays 5:00-8:00 pm (11+ year olds). Agency Description: Lifeworks Lifeworks Services is a nonprofit organization that helps people with disabilities live fuller lives that are integrated into the flow of community experience. Through employment at area businesses, social enrichment opportunities, and customized support services, Lifeworks provides the tools clients need to build the lives they want to live. For more than 40 years, we have collaborated with employers, volunteers, and government agencies to create expanded opportunities for people with disabilities. Locations: We have centers located in Apple Valley, Bloomington, Brooklyn Park, Eagan, Hastings and Mankato. We offer a Supported Employment program for people who have work as a goal. These individuals work in the community at more than 300 businesses s and are supported by our staff who act in the role of a job coach. For people who do not have work as a goal we have a Life Enrichment program, offering a large variety of activities, opportunities to access the community, participate in groups and receive therapies (music, speech, occupational and physical). Position Description: 2

3 Normandale students can lead groups to discuss social skills and participate in role playing opportunities, play board or computer games, pursue personal interests with individuals such as travel, crafts, reading, current events, sports or art. You may work one to one with individuals on the computer developing writing skills, helping with resumes, or learning overall technology skills. Students will not be left alone with clients and will be supervised by Lifeworks staff at all times. You will have access to our supervisors and direct care staff to ask questions and receive information related to our clients and organization. This is an opportunity to learn, grow and to make a difference in someone s life. I hope you will consider joining us! Guidelines: We require a minimum of a 20 hour commitment, at least one day per week for the ten week semester. Our centers accept students Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am and 2:00 pm. We do not have opportunities in the evening or on the weekends. Once the volunteer coordinator has received the application they will follow up with you promptly. Students must complete a brief training regarding dignity and respect for people with disabilities and general information regarding the organization prior to beginning volunteering. One2One Agency Description: One2One exists to empower youth. We partner with organizations to create mentoring programs, as well as recruit and train volunteer mentors. This October, One2One will guide Normandale Community College students and middle school students in mentoring at the Southdale YMCA in Edina. We need 20 Normandale students to volunteer as mentors. Watch this video for more information on One2One: Position Description: The role of a mentor is to listen, encourage and be a trusted friend to a student as they learn to navigate and succeed in school, relationships and the community. Mentors will meet weekly with their student at the Southdale YMCA, participating in both structured group activities and one-on-one time with their student. Program Details: Thursdays, 2:15-4pm (Jan - May) at the Southdale YMCA Mentor Criteria: Commit to at least one 18-week program semester (Jan 7 - May 12) Attend weekly programming and meet monthly with YMCA staff Mentors will receive a FREE membership to the Southdale YMCA for the duration of the program 3

4 How to Apply: Apply online at or contact Jack Mackinnon at with questions Complete application and interview process by Friday, January 22 The first day of programming is Thursday, January 7th (or a rolling start date, based on the timing of your application) Open Circle Agency Description: Augustana Open Circle Adult Day Services is a non-profit, activity program for older adults who are at risk of being placed in long term care due to dementia or other chronic illness. Our main goal is to keep our members and their loved ones united within their homes and communities for as long as possible through an integrated health care and case management program. Open Circle participants have access to daily activities, social services, nursing care and therapies all in one facility. Position Description: Students will co-facilitate daily activities and socialize with members. Students also have the option of developing their own program or project based on personal interests and life experiences. Students will work with older adults with a wide range of backgrounds and medical diagnosis. Students will have access to literature and video materials pertaining to dementia and dementia support services. Students will also have the opportunity to conduct informational interviews with Open Circle professionals in activities, social work and nursing departments. Students will enjoy a highly flexible schedule to accommodate their busy lives! Hours available: Monday-Friday, between the hours of 8 a.m.-5 p.m. All applicants must complete an informational interview, application and orientation. People Serving People Agency Description: People Serving People provides emergency housing and community services that assist families experiencing homelessness in becoming self-sufficient and reconnecting with the community. In a safe, secure and sober environment, PSP provides services which cultivate independence and accountability. What distinguishes PSP from other emergency shelters is the broad range of on-site programs and services designed to address common barriers that homeless families are faced with. To provide a new opportunity for families, it is necessary that we help them find ways to break through these barriers and stop patterns that lead to poverty and homelessness. Housing and employment issues are addressed, along with educational, emotional, early childhood development, and life enrichment needs. 4

5 Position Description: Volunteers allow People Serving People to provide necessary services to our families. In fact, in 2014, People Serving People volunteers generously contributed over 32,000 hours of service. Volunteers make a difference! We have long term (2-3 mo. Commitment) and one-time volunteer positions available. Long Term Volunteer Positions: Commit to a regular weekly schedule for 2-3 months. Age: 18 + Daytime Early Childhood Development Programs Evening Children's Tutor Children's Activity Assistant* Roving Reader Description Assist our staff in our Infant/Toddler School and/or Preschools (6 wks-5 yrs) Be a positive influence on elementary aged school children by assisting with homework and educational activities. Help our staff facilitate age appropriate games, crafts and group activities with children ages Reading to PSP children in our front lobby and helping to maintain our library. Each shift is 2 hours. Days/Time M-F: 9:00 am-4:30 pm (2-4 hour shift minimum) M-H: 5:30-8pm M-TH: 5:30-8pm; M-F: (additional summer hours 1-3pm); Saturdays: 1-3pm Monday-Sunday: 8am-8pm (2 hour shift minimum) How to Apply: 1. Note about Tracking Hours: To track hours volunteers must follow PSP's hours tracking process, which will be taught at orientation. Also, volunteers should keep a backup log of their hours. 6 Resource- Helping Families in Recovery Agency Description: RESOURCE invests in people to care for themselves and their families. Our mission is to empower people to achieve greater personal, social and economic success. RESOURCE offers three main areas of services: chemical and mental health, employment and training. We provide licensed clinical treatment, care coordination, and recovery support to ensure that successes achieved are long-lasting. Our workforce development services include: assessment, credentialed career training, education placement, job search assistance, placement, retention & follow-up services, and wrap around support services. Position Description: There are opportunities within the chemical health division to help within the Mothers Achieving Recovery for Family Unity program. This program allows mothers who are in need of chemical health services to remain united with their children while utilizing our treatment and recovery maintenance services. Resource's family services are also designed to help educate the mothers about parenting, childhood development, and healthy families. Volunteers in this area must have experience working with children. Childhood Development Assistants- are needed for morning programming designed to prepare children ages infant to 5 years old for kindergarten. Volunteers interact with children one-on-one or in small groups completing short lessons based around developing cognitive skills, motor skills, and creativity. 3-4 hour/ week. Available in Minneapolis. Mornings, 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, Mon-Fri. Specific available shifts may vary based on current volunteer schedules. 3 month commitment. Children's Activities Assistants- needed in the afternoon to interact with youth in our family program while mothers engage in a parenting workshop. Volunteers could work in youth from infant to high school aged, but more commonly volunteers help with the infant to 5 year old group. Activities may include homework, play, games, crafts, reading, etc. 2 ½ to 3 hour/week. Available in Minneapolis. Every Monday or Tuesday afternoon from 3:30 to 6:00 pm. 3 month commitment. Celebrating Families- curriculum is currently looking for Thursday volunteers to assist with leading activities for children in the youngest age group (0-5 yr old). This curriculum is a 16 week lesson plan that we will rotate - we require that volunteers in this opportunity make the 16 week commitment or if begin in the middle of the rotation to commit to at least that session, preferably the following as well. Available in Minneapolis. Every Thursday from 4:30 to 7:00 pm. Minimum of 16 week commitment. Training Division Classroom Assistant/ Lab Assistant- Our training division to help adult students in both beginner and advanced Microsoft Office Suite courses. Students are adults of varying ages and abilities. Volunteer must be fluent and able to clearly give instructions on Microsoft Office 2010 products - may be asked to take an assessment before beginning to volunteer. Volunteers assist staff members in computer lab or classroom 6

7 setting to ensure students receive the amount of attention they need. Duties include but aren't limited to: Assist adult learners with computers, programs, procedures, and projects related to their specific class. Other tasks may be given by instructor. Job Club Assistant- Our chemical health division offers job search services to individuals after they have successful completed our treatment services to help them reenter the workforce. Job Club Assistants help clients with job search tasks and computer tasks. May be available in Minneapolis on Thursdays in the morning. Possibly afternoon hours available for 3-4 hrs/week. This opportunity may also be available at other Minneapolis locations if you are not available on Thursday mornings. No matter the commitment requirement of the school we ask for a commitment of one shift per week for the entire semester. Our Community Support Programs (CSP) serve people with serious and persistent mental illness. To volunteer in a CSP you must have knowledge or experience working with people with a mental illness. Minimum 3 month commitment. Drop -In Volunteers interact with members during drop-in or social/recreation programming. Volunteers could do a number of things from playing board games and card games to playing pool or ping-pong to attending one of the planned activities to encourage member participation. Opportunities may be available in Minneapolis, Bloomington, and Crystal. Weekday afternoons. With two convenient Twin Cities locations, Sholom offers a continuum of care ranging from senior apartment homes and assisted living to short-term rehab and skilled nursing care, hospice services, memory care, adult day services and meals on wheels. Recognizing that the elderly are individuals with psychological, emotional spiritual, social and physical needs, the organization is committed to working with individuals and their families to find the most comfortable and enjoyable living arrangements Position Description: Students would be assisting Therapeutic Recreational specialists, escorting residents to/from programming, special events, help in the facilitating of activities or enjoying some one on one time with a resident. The hours are flexible. There is a 1.5 hour minimum per shift, at least once a week, with opportunities available days/ some evenings and weekends. We have a large Russian speaking population and those residents would love the interaction with someone who also speaks Russian. Students must be willing to commit to 20 hours for the semester, with a minimum of 1.5 hours per shift, 7

Students are required to fill out a volunteer application, which includes a background study and have had or provide a copy of a 2 STEP Mantoux( TB test) completed in the last 90 days. The 1 st step of the mantoux (TB test) will be given at the time of orientation and the 2 nd step 10 days after. This will be done at Sholom by one of the nursing staff at no cost to the student. Orientation, which takes about an hour, is arranged on a one on one basis which includes a tour of our campus and introduction to staff. Questions: Contact Carol Kvasnik ckvasnik@sholom.com St. Croix Hospice Agency Description: At St. Croix Hospice, care and comfort are tailored to the unique preferences of our patients, families and primary caregivers. We care specifically for patients diagnosed with a terminal illness (with a prognosis of 6 months or less). We individualize care to ensure it is provided in a way that brings dignity, respect and compassion. We believe that moments of joy can be found through meaningful experiences; even in challenging times. Position Description: As a companion volunteer for St. Croix Hospice, you will visit patients and families by offering emotional support with conversations, listening, or even a quiet calm presence. The visits may involve reading, walking or helping patients attend activities in their assisted living facility. Visiting times are flexible and are individualized to our patients and volunteer s schedules. Time commitment is a minimum of one hour a week. Comprehensive training is provided as well as ongoing support from the St. Croix Hospice team. In order to volunteer, you must be over 18 and pass a criminal background check and a cost-free Mantoux (TB) screening. Administrative and vigil volunteer opportunities are also available.
