1 Enthusiast Digest September 2016 Doylestown Hospital among nation s Top 100 Hospitals with Great Heart Programs Doylestown Hospital was named among the 100 hospitals and health systems with great heart programs by Becker s Hospital Review in its 2016 edition of the list. Doylestown Hospital joins other nationally-recognized institutions on the list such as the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins. Doylestown Hospital previously was named to the list in We are the only hospital in Bucks County to garner recognition on this annual list. The culture and expectations of our Medical Staff, Associates and Volunteers elevate the quality of our cardiac program to a level rarely seen by community hospitals, said Scott Levy, MD, chief Medical Officer for Doylestown Health. The program is built on excellence, one patient at a time, and it is rewarding to receive national recognition for the work we do every day. Flu vaccine campaign starts October 3 The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each season. Like last flu season, and similar to many hospitals in the United States, the flu vaccine is mandatory for all Associates, Volunteers and Medical Staff, unless there is an approved medical or religious declination received by Occupational Health Services*. The DH flu vaccine campaign for Associates and Medical Staff will run from October 3 to October 28, Effective October 29, 2016, any Associate who is not vaccinated will not be allowed to work. Doylestown Hospital also qualifies for Target: Stroke SM Honor Roll Elite Plus. The award recognizes the hospital s commitment to providing the most appropriate stroke treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence. Doylestown Hospital honored with national awards for heart attack care Doylestown Hospital received the Mission: Lifeline Gold Plus Receiving Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association for the treatment of patients who suffer severe heart attacks. The hospital is also recognized with the American College of Cardiology s NCDR ACTION Registry GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award for Doylestown Hospital is one of only 223 hospitals nationwide to receive the American College of Cardiology s NCDR ACTION Registry GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award for

3 Silver Award for treatment of cardiac arrest Doylestown Hospital received the Get With The Guidelines -Resuscitation Silver Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association for the treatment of patients who suffer cardiac arrests in the hospital. Members of the team from the Intensive Care Unit recently accepted the award. Laughter and crying: ICU nurse earns special recognition Doreen Henry, RN, CCRN is being honored with a special recognition from the Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania. The Patient Choice Award is chosen from nominations submitted by patients and/or patients family. She joined Doylestown Hospital in 1996 and recently transitioned to the day shift after working night shift in the ICU for many years. 1 year, 24 ideas, 68 Associates, $1.7 million In the last year, 24 ideas were implemented as part of the Value Enhancement Program. A total of 68 Associates participated. Net savings or enhanced revenue: Nearly $1.7 million, or about $71,000 per idea. Doylestown Health took time recently to celebrate the impact two dozen ideas can have on a non-profit organization that has thrived on a very thin profit margin. Every one of the 24 ideas had an impact some large, some small, all important. Value Enhancement: It s not just about the savings In the first full year of the Value Enhancement, nearly $1.7 million in savings or extra revenue were realized. Is $5 million out of reach? Our consultants don t think so in fact, they think $18 million is possible. How to identify a value enhancement: Will the change increase professionalism, accuracy or reputation? Will the change increase value, access or availability of service, or revenue? Will the change make us more proud of our work or improve quality? All ideas are welcome. 3

Associates have a blast at first kickball game The first Associate kickball game on September 27 drew two teams to the field at Lenape Middle School. Organized as part of the Associate wellness program, 18 players got their kicks and some exercise during the friendly fun competition. Ice cream social a hit with Associates and Volunteers The Village Improvement Association of Doylestown (VIA) treated Doylestown Health Associates and Volunteers to a make-your-own sundae social on Wednesday, Sept. 21. Doylestown Health makes big impression at bike race Doylestown Health was a major presence at the Thompson Bucks County Classic on Sunday, September 11. The health system sponsored the Doylestown Health Pro Women's Race for the third year. VIA President Cory H. Schroeder gave opening remarks for the race, and CEO and President Jim Brexler presented the awards. 4

5 Doylestown Health medical mission team leaves mark in Nicaragua A group of 28 Doylestown Hospital physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, technicians and family members, some of whom are in their teens, spent a week based in the mountain town of Matagalpa in Nicaragua in July. They traveled to four different villages where they set up clinics and saw about 850 people of all ages in four days. Wanting to make an impact throughout the year, a group of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and others at Doylestown Hospital formed Healthy Neighbors International earlier this year. The goal of the nonprofit HNI is to provide clinical collaboration and follow-up care after the team leaves. For more information, visit Facebook.com/BeAHealthyNeighbor. Congratulations to Patrice for her quarter century of service! Patrice Blanchard, technical director of the Echo lab, recently celebrated 25 years at Doylestown Hospital. Patrice's fellow Associates and members of the Medical Staff honored her with a special bulletin board and lots of treats. September Volunteer of the Month: Brenda Olenick Brenda Olenick grew up in Steubenville, Ohio and married her high school sweetheart, Mike, in The couple celebrates 40 years of marriage on December 22. In 2001, Brenda and a group of friends from started the Silver Spoons service and helped feed patients who needed extra assistance during meal times. Brenda transitioned to the Cancer Institute several years ago. We thank her for her contribution of 1,568 hours of service. Volunteer s memory lives on in gift for chapel Lillian Tait began volunteering in Pastoral Care in 2005 first as a patient visitor and then in the Pastoral Care office. Her sudden death in January brought sadness to her fellow Volunteers and friends. They donated memorial gifts to Pastoral Care, which used the funds to purchase a beautiful bench and side table for the Mary and Gerald Santucci Chapel. 5

New rotation debuts in ArtWalk The ArtWalk's new exhibit features lots of photography, modern and traditional painting from local artists as well as works by students at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School. The exhibit will hang for the next three months. It's National Environmental Services and Housekeeping Week!
