2 Nursing 406 Introduction to Nursing Research Course Syllabus Credit: Placement: Prerequisites: Three (3) semester credit hours Second Semester, Senior Year; Component of Level V Statistics 273; All previous courses in the nursing curriculum Co-Requisites: Enrollment in or successful completion of Nursing 404 and Nursing 407 Course Description: This course introduces the principles relating to nursing research. The basic components of nursing research are presented. Each student critiques nursing research articles for the application of nursing research findings in various client care settings. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students are expected to: 1. Understand the basic steps of nursing research. 2. Delineate the role of the baccalaureate prepared nurse in research. 3. Evaluate published research findings. 4. Apply research findings in clinical practice. Teaching Methods/Learner Activities: Various teaching strategies utilized include group classroom activities, assigned individual activities, questioning, class participation, and didactic presentations. A variety of audiovisual technological aids are utilized to provide a more active learning environment for students. Group tests are used to determine knowledge of research content. Other learner activities include assigned readings, retrieval of research articles from various sources, critique of specified components of the published research study, written assignments to determine application, oral presentations of the final critiques, and participation in data collection for a limited research project. Critiques of Research Articles (written-2) 2. Critique of Research Articles (Guidelines): 1. Guidelines for the critiques are provided in the textbook and by the professor. 2. One published article must be a quantitative research study, and one published article

4 must be a qualitative research study. The articles must be approved by the professor prior to the submission of the written critiques. 3. A copy of each article must accompany the submission of each typed critique. 4. The critiques must be submitted on the date required by the professor.. The components to include in the research article critique are specified: Citation: Cite the reference using APA format. Type of Study: Identify as quantitative or qualitative study. Research Problem & Purpose: Briefly explain the problem, and state the purpose of the study. Explain the significance of the study to nursing. Literature Review: Summarize the studies cited in the literature review section. What are the dates of the studies cited? Theory: Describe the concepts of the theory. How is it related to the study? Research Question(s) or Hypothesis(es): State them. Variables: What are the definitions of the variables? Sample and Setting: Describe the characteristics of the sample: number, gender, race, etc. Where were the data collected? Ethical/Legal Aspects: Were the rights of human subjects addressed; how? Measurement/Data Collection: What were the data collection instruments (tools) used in the study? Did the author address the validity and reliability of the instrument(s)? Data Analysis: What analytical procedures were used in this study? Describe the findings of the study. Discussion/Interpretation of Findings: Were the findings similar to or different from previous research? How were the results related back to the theory? Utilization of Findings: How can the findings be applied to clinical practice? What were recommendations for future research? Power Point of Critiques: The presentations are to be a maximum of 10 slides. The aspects to be discussed are the following: identification of topic and how the topic was chosen; research problem and purpose; literature review of previous studies; research hypothesis or question; the methodology including design, data collection procedure, and data analysis; and the findings and their application to nursing practice.

7 Grambling State University School of Nursing Graduate Nursing Program Nursing Advanced Nursing Research Credit: 3 semester hours Prerequisite: Nursing 01 Course Description: This course provides opportunities for students to review the research process and selected methodologies, critique reports of nursing research, and write a research proposal. The conduct and utilization of nursing research in caring for individuals, families, groups, and communities are discussed and analyzed through lectures, assigned preparatory work, group activities, and presentations. To expand knowledge of the research process, students complete research proposals for appropriate clinical populations in a variety of nursing settings. Qualitative and quantitative methods are discussed and specific individual studies are critiqued for their value in contribution to the knowledge base of nursing. Course Objectives: Evaluation: Upon completion of this course, students are expected to: 1. Identify researchable problems for the advancement of nursing practice. 2. Demonstrate knowledge of the research process and selected methods to answer specific research questions. 3. Review the literature for existing knowledge concerning variables, theories, and methods of studying a selected problem. 4. Complete a research proposal for a quantitative or qualitative study.
