1 N251: Health Care of Adults through Senescence, Part I Assignment Instructions: Class Presentation and Article critique 1. This is a GROUP project. Select a group of 2-3 students to complete this assignment. The presentation is to be no longer than 15 minutes. 2. Select a topic related to Medical-Surgical nursing. You may choose from any subject covered this quarter in N251; see your topical outline & schedule for ideas. You must narrow your topic to provide a meaningful, yet concise, presentation. There will be a sign up sheet for dates and topics. 3. EACH student is responsible for contributing one NURSING ARTICLE, with a copy of the article handed in the day of your presentation. Your article review, in APA format is due the same day. See article critique guidelines. The Group: It is the student s responsibility to form a group, choose a group topic, & complete the project. Assignment of tasks within each group will be the responsibility of the group s members. There must be some nursing focus and relationship of the articles chosen to the topic addressed. A portion of your grade for this assignment will be based on an evaluation of your performance by other members of your group (see Group Member Evaluation Form). Therefore, it is in your best interests to communicate clearly with your groupmates & submit excellent work to your group. The Topic: Review the reading schedule for this quarter & select a general subject for investigation. Then find a current (<5 years old) article that presents a NEW NURSING RESEARCH FINDING related to the subject. Use your article to help you focus your presentation on a nursing topic. Do not focus on a disease, laboratory test, surgical procedure, or other medical topic. A nursing topic would discuss a nursing responsibility (assessment, nursing procedures, med administration, client education, etc.). Examples: A. General subject: Care of clients with respiratory problems New nursing research finding: The effectiveness of quarantines for SARS is limited by clients perceived risk of contracting the disease; clients adherence to protocols may be affected by fear and denial (Cava et al., 2005). B. General subject: Care of elderly clients New nursing research finding: Three tools for detecting elder abuse have been constructed (IOA, EAI, & EAST); the EAST may be unreliable & fail to identify abused elders (Meeks-Sjostrom, 2004)., assessment tool, etc) One handout for the audience should be professional in appearance & meaningful in content. It is to summarize the presented articles.

2 CSUB DEPARTMENT OF NURISNG ARTICLE CRITIQUE GUIDELINES Some thoughts/criteria concerning an Article Critique This assignment is characterized by addressing the strengths in the article in relation to some of the following assessment criteria, and/or weaknesses in relation to others. Sound analysis of the main points and issues, with reference to literature where appropriate. 6. The relating of conclusions to arguments made and evidence presented; with critical reflection on own experience, where appropriate. 7. Expertise in key aspects of the specialist field. 8. Little or no irrelevant material. (Can you identify what constitutes irrelevant material?) 9. No errors of fact which detract significantly from the content of the material. (Do you have any issues with some of the information?) 10. No unsubstantiated value judgments. In addition, for a research-based assignment involving the collection of empirical data: 11. Evidence of critical engagement with methodological literature; 12. Satisfactory presentation and analysis of the data gathered.
