1 As you begin to consider your DNP Project and Practicum, this roadmap highlights milestones in each course to help you prepare. If you have questions about your DNP Project or PICOT topic, please them to If you have questions about your practicum site or contract please them to NR-700 Review all DNP Project resources and the DNP Project & Practicum Handbook (In the Course Resources section of your classroom and in the Library). Listen to the New Student Orientation. Take up your advisor s offer to walk through the entire DNP program Get in the habit of downloading assignment guidelines and rubrics in Week 1 of every session. To get these important, guiding documents, go to > Modules > Course Resources > Assignment Documents and select the rubrics or paper guidelines that you need. Attend the General Writing Call. Begin NR700 developing drafts of a logical problem statement and the PICOT (weeks 1 & 2). Explore nursing conceptual models and theories as underpinnings to your project development: Practice applying tools of critical appraisal to evaluate theoretical framework. Begin to search and review current nursing and other literature for evidence that supports your project; supporting that the problem exists (and significance), what the etiologies (root causes or influencing factors) are and that the intervention you re considering works to address the etiology, and influence the problem toward a positive outcome. Bring your understandings of scientific underpinnings, literature search and discoveries together in two assignments - an Inquiry Paper and an Annotated Bibliography. Connect learning this term with AACN Essentials for DNP, Program and Course Outcomes through writing a substantive You Decide Reflection. Prepare to enter NR701 wherein you will continue evaluating the literature you have found while continuing to refine your logical problem statement and PICOT question. NR-701 Review all DNP Project resources and the DNP Project & Practicum Handbook Participate in the Call Meeting to understand how to construct a PICOT question (to be announced in the course). Conduct initial organizational assessment to determine practicum site needs, which can potentially serve as basis for future DNP Project. Following organization needs assessment, expand upon the problem statement and PICOT question, which can serve as the basis for your potential DNP Project. Critically evaluate quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research findings to support practice change(s) designed to improve outcomes. Appraise research studies (quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods) to support potential interventions and the need for practice change within evidence table. Evidence for your project are either primary research studies or systematic reviews and should relate to the effectiveness of your chosen intervention for your practice change implementation. There must be existing contemporary evidence (no more than 5 years old) to support the need for change, selected intervention/nursing practice change initiative, and evidence to support how you will evaluate the intervention/practice change. 2 NR-714 Work to refine your PICOT question in light of economic appraisal, and potential DNP Project topic (based on feedback given from NR-700, NR-701, NR-714). Continue collecting and reviewing your scholarly literature and expanding your evidence table to incorporate all aspects of quantitative, qualitative, and economic evidence based on your workable PICOT topic; keep in mind scientific evidence for your project are either primary research studies or systematic reviews and should relate to the effectiveness of your chosen intervention for your practice change implementation. Remember there must be existing current evidence to support your selected intervention / nursing practice change initiative and evidence to support how you will evaluate that intervention/ practice change. Develop statistical analysis plans for your project. NR-703 Begin environmental scan of stakeholder inputs into your intended practice change. Develop change model plans for your project. Consider leadership and system s level contributions to your project s design, implementation, and/or evaluation. Continue with your literature reviews of quantitative, qualitative, and economic evidence. NR-704 Elaborate on the description of your project population and the impact of the practice problem. Continue with your literature reviews. Read and respond to the received from the DNP practicum coordinators. 120 days prior to starting NR-702 You will need all your paperwork submitted and approved prior to registering for NR-702, the first Practicum Course. Please refer to all Practicum and Project information in the Student Resources on the Course Panel and in the Student Handbook. Chamberlain University s contract with Site and approval of the Practicum Site by Chamberlain University. (This may take the minimum days, so this needs to be started as early as you have selected your Site.) Chamberlain University s Approval of Preceptor - An RN with a doctoral degree Approval of Project Change Project by Site and Preceptor PICOT/ Project Change Topic Proposal Reviewed by Chamberlain University NOTE: The PICOT question submitted with your practicum application will be reviewed as an acceptable PICOT in order to enter NR-702. You may still need to revise your PICOT as you develop your Project Proposal in NR-702. NR-706 Begin translation science scan of information science inputs into your intended practice change. Develop translation science plans for your project. Consider information science contributions to your project s design, implementation, and/or evaluation. Expand your evidence table and develop synthesis of existing evidence with your intended practice recommendations.

3 NR-708 Consider the health policy implications of your project. Consider your organizational assessment, DNP preceptor interview and policy analysis. All practicum documentation must be submitted for approval 120 days prior to registering for NR-702, the first practicum course. Please refer to all practicum and project information in the Student Resources tab in your course and the DNP Project & Practicum Handbook. Practicum site approval by Chamberlain University along with completed clinical affiliation agreement (This may take at minimum 90 to 120 days, so this needs to be started as soon as you have identified your site) Chamberlain University approval of preceptor Practicum site and preceptor approval of project change project PICOT form reviewed and signed-off by Chamberlain University NR-711 Finalize organizational assessment needs analysis for your intended practice change. Initiate project management scan of inputs into your intended practice change. Develop project protocol plans for your project. Consider stakeholder inputs to your project s design, implementation, and/or evaluation including submission of PICOT for review and finalizing project and practicum paperwork with intended preceptor and practicum site. Practicum Begins All Pre-Practicum Paperwork needs to be complete. The PICOT question submitted with your practicum application will be reviewed as an acceptable PICOT in order to enter NR-702. You may still need to revise your PICOT as you work to write your Project Proposal. The intent is for you to be ready to start your NR-702 practicum with a PICOT question and change practice topic that can be worked further towards this Project Proposal Plan. NR-702 is a very intense practicum course. You need to be prepared as best as you can be when you start this first practicum course so that you are not delayed. If you have questions about your DNP project PICOT or preceptor please contact: projectpracticumadvice@chamberlain.edu. If you have any questions about your practicum site or contract, please contact: DNPpracticum@chamberlain.edu. NR-702 Participate in a phone call with your preceptor and practicum instructor during the first two weeks of the course. Complete the assessment and planning phases of your project. Write your project proposal and obtain final approval of the proposed plan for your project. Begin any facility Institutional Review Board (IRB) requirements that may be lengthy or time consuming. Log all your hours as required within MyEvaluations. This should encompass approximately 25% of the total amount of required practicum hours you will need to complete. Meet course outcomes for NR-702. Develop a professional PowerPoint Presentation explaining your proposed project. NR-705 Participate in a phone call with your preceptor and practicum instructor during the first two weeks of the course. Complete your IRB application and obtain Chamberlain University IRB approval for your project and Facility IRB approval (if required). NOTE: You may not be able progress to NR-707 without both Chamberlain University IRB approval and Facility IRB approval (if required). Once you have IRB approval from Chamberlain University and your facility/site, you may begin the implementation phase of your project. Log all your hours as required within MyEvaluations. By the end of NR-705 approximately 50% of the total amount of required practicum hours should be completed. Meet course outcomes for NR-705.

4 NR-707 Participate in a phone call with your preceptor and practicum instructor during the first two weeks of the course. Complete the implementation phase of your project. Develop a professional poster describing your project. Log all your practicum hours as required. By the end of NR-705 approximately 75% of the total amount of required practicum hours should be complete. Meet course outcomes for NR-707. NOTE: Your Implementation time frame needs to be 8-10 weeks and completed by the end of NR-707 NR-709 Participate in a phone call with your preceptor and practicum instructor during the first two weeks of the course. Complete data collection and analysis for the evaluation phase of your project. Develop a PowerPoint presentation and give an oral presentation of your project. Write your DNP Project final paper. Log all your practicum hours as required. Meet course outcomes for NR-709. Meet all DNP graduation requirements, including MyEvaluation documentation of completion of the required number of project and practicum hours. Other ideas for help with your DNP Project Most important, keep in mind you are not conducting original research for your DNP Project. You will be implementing an evidence-based nursing practice change/intervention and evaluating the change. The basics of the DNP Project are summarized in your Topic and PICOT question: YOUR TOPIC: Meet with the key decision-maker(s) within the potential practicum site to perform a needs assessment. Identify the primary needs within the organization, which can serve as the basis for your potential DNP Project. Delve into research to find evidence associated with the potential topic you will work on. Meet with your preceptor to share the results from the practicum site needs assessment and the evidence you have collected on your topic. It is very important to make sure your practicum site and preceptor are all in agreement with your DNP Project plans. YOUR PICOT QUESTION: Population Who is the population? Who will be working with you to implement the project? This will most likely be RN s or Nurse Practitioners, as you will be implementing a nursing-focused change in practice. Intervention This is the nursing focused change in practice you are planning to make. The intervention can be in the form of an evidence-based policy/protocol or guidelines to improve outcomes. Consider these and other similar ideas as you begin to review research and other scholarly resources associated with your topic. Comparison - Your project will be compared to not making the practice change. Outcome - The evaluation of the impact of the practice change will be measured by using an already existing valid and data collection instrument/tool. Note you will need to seek and gain permission in writing to use any data collection instrument/tool. No alterations/modifications can be made to the data collection instrument/tool unless you have written permission to do so from its developer(s). Timing - The time frame associated with your project will be 8-10 weeks, which reflects the implementation and data collection phases.

5 Other ideas for help with your DNP Project (Continued) THE PICOT QUESTION: Your DNP Project will consist of a PICOT that describes: The population The implementation of an evidence-based nursing practice change intervention Compared to not doing the change. The outcome/evaluation of the change (data collection, analysis and evaluation of the practice change/intervention). The 8-10 week time frame associated with the implementation and data collection phases. Keep in mind: The intervention/practice change must be supported by a minimum of contemporary (no more than 5 years old) research articles. The evaluation of the practice change will be the collection of data via a valid/reliable questionnaire/tool that you will find in the nursing literature. This tool will be used to collect data to evaluate the outcome of the practice change. Up to 20 hours of practicum time per didactic course can be claimed within your MyEvaluations logging tool. Carefully keep track of all time you spend working on your potential DNP Project and enter it into your MyEvaluations logging tool. Remember to fully elaborate upon the activities you performed in an effort to demonstrate how you met and/or addressed the various DNP Essentials and their various sub-competencies. IT IS TIME TO START To begin, create a DNP Project file (electronic and paper) and locate all DNP Project resources in the Course Resources section of your classroom and in the Chamberlain Library (Project/Practicum file). The DNP Degree Program has a dedicated DNP Librarian to help you if needed. Review the available textbooks and other resources (AACN) about DNP projects. As early as possible, consider the potential practicum site and preceptor for your practicum and have some dialogue together to best understand the facility needs and the needs for your DNP Project. Reflect upon contemporary research findings and the needs of the facility to best understand how to approach the nursing practice change you will make for your DNP Project. Collect and organize contemporary research studies and other scholarly resources to see what is published about your topic, planned intervention and evaluation. You can search literature broadly under your main topic to see what nurses might be researching, studying and publishing on these topics. You may need to change and revise your topic or parts of your PICOT question as you review the literature, and discuss with your preceptor and site as you mutually decide how you want to approach your nursing practice change. This scholarly literature review will be the backbone of your own DNP Project. You will find much of what you need for your project planning in the literature as you examine it closely and thoroughly. Search the Library Databases (examples: CINAHL or MEDLINE among others) for your topic ideas, health concerns and nursing issues. Search the database PROQUEST - Dissertations and Thesis with topics and DNP as authors to see what other DNP s have done for their projects. Be flexible with ideas and search words to find what is available. As you search the literature, you will begin to gather ideas. You will learn more about what nurses are researching and writing about, and how we can affect change in our nursing practice. After reviewing the research studies and evidence in the literature, you will find evidence and approaches to consider your practice change initiative/intervention and evaluation that you will be using for your project.
