1 2011 Group Needs Assessment (GNA) Sacramento County

2 Demographics 91,557 members enrolled in Anthem Blue Cross in Sacramento County. 88.8% of the member population are with a provider that has a capitated contract with medical groups and 11.2% of the member population are with a provider that has a fee for service contract.. Membership is distributed in the following pattern: 8,220 live in the zip code (City of Sacramento), 4,973 live in the zip code (City of Sacramento), 4,511 live in the zip code (City of North Highlands), 4,340 live in the zip code (North Highlands), and 4,097 live in the zip code (city of Sacramento).

3 Demographics Age breakdown is as follows: 20,613 are 0-5 years old; 17,943 are 6-11; 14,545 are 12-17; 14,389 are 18-27; 15,580 are 28-44; 7,386 are 45-64; 1,092 are and nine are over 90 years old. 51,041 (56%) women and girls and 40,516 (44%) men and boys.

4 Survey Results Sample of 1,000 Anthem Blue Cross Medi-Cal members drawn from active member eligibility data. Telephonic survey Script approved by the Anthem Blue Cross legal department. Received a total of 41 survey responses for a 4.1% return rate on the adjusted sample size.

5 Survey Results Reported Language Needs Preferred language for communicating with doctor or child s doctor: 21 respondents (55.3%) prefer to speak English,12 (31.6%) Vietnamese, 5 (13.2%) prefer Cantonese, 1 (2.6%) prefer Arabic. Primary care provider speaks their preferred language: 35 respondents (89.7%) say yes, 3 (7.7%) say no and 1 (2.6%) answers not sure. Rate their own English language skills, if English is not their first language: 8 respondents (33.3%) say very well, 2 (8.3%) say well, 14 (58.3%) say not well at all.

6 Survey Results Reported Language Needs Need for an interpreter for medical visits: 4 respondents (16%) say yes, 19 (76%) say no and two (8%) is not sure. Three answer the follow-up question about who most often interprets for you and 38 do not respond. Of the 3 who answer 2 (66.7%) say family member or friend and 1 (33.3%) say other.

7 Survey Results Availability & Accessibility of Health Information Offered health education materials: 29 (74.4%) say yes and 7 (17.9%) say no with 3 (7.7%) saying not sure. Ease of readability: 23 (79.3%) say yes materials are easy to read and 2 (6.9%) say no and 4 (13.8%) say not sure. Health topics they wish to learn more about: 11 (33.3%) healthy eating 6 (18.2%) asthma 5 (15.2%) cholesterol or heart health 5 (15.2%) diabetes 5 (15.2%) high blood pressure 3 (9.1%) child safety 3 (9.1%) exercise 3 (9.1%) healthy teeth

9 Survey Results Preferred Methods of Learning How respondents like to learn: 12 (32.4%) using the internet, 11 respondents (29.7%) talking to a doctor or other health professional, 9 (24.3%) through television, 8 (21.6%) are not interested in learning, 6 (16.2%) through reading a newsletter or brochure, 3 (8.1%) through attending a class, workshop, or support group, and 1 (2.7%) through radio. Done in the last year to learn more about their or their child s health: 17 (45.9%) say they have done nothing, 14 (37.8%) talk with a doctor, 4 (10.8%) get advice from the internet, 2 (5.4%) talk with a health educator, 1 (2.7%) attend a class, 1 (2.7%) talk with a nutrition specialist, 1 (2.7%) call Nurse advice line, 1 (2.7%) use a self care handbook to look up health information, 1 (2.7%) listen to the radio, 1 (2.7%) watch the television and 1 (2.7%) did other things to learn about health.

10 Survey Results Access to Health Education Services Have any difficulty getting information or support to stay healthy: 32 respondents (91.4%) say they have no difficulty, no respondents reported having difficulty getting information and support. In the follow-up question relating to barriers no respondents answer the question. Satisfaction with materials and resources available from their doctor, clinic, hospital and health plan: 5 (14.7%) report being very happy, 22 (64.7%) happy, 4 (11.8%) not happy and 3 (8.8%) say does not apply. Prefer to receive information from their health plan: 30 (83.3%) prefer to have information mailed to their house, 3 (8.3%) prefer the health plan website, 2 (5.6%) prefer and 2 (5.6%) prefers not to receive information from the health plan.

11 Survey Results Access to Technology How often respondents use the internet: 14 responders (37.8%) report that they use the internet always, 13 (35.1%) report sometimes, 6 (16.2%) rarely, and 4 (10.8%) say they never use the internet.

12 Survey Results Health Beliefs How frequently your health beliefs conflict with your doctor s advice: 32 respondents (91.4%) say that their health beliefs never conflict with the doctor s advice, 1 (2.9%) say always conflict and 2(5.7%) say rarely.

13 Survey Results Knowledge & Utilization of Services Question about specific Anthem Blue Cross services: 11 (42.3%) report knowing about the 24/7 Physician Line, 11 (42.3%) know about the 24/7 Nurse Advice Line, 10 (38.5%) about the Customer Care Center, none about the Health Information Audio Tape Library, 9 (34.6%) about the plan website, 3(11.5%) about the Lactation Support Line for breastfeeding information and 14 (53.8%) know nothing about these services.

15 Health Management Programs There are three health management, Healthy Habits programs available for Anthem Medi-Cal managed Care members in California. These Healthy Habits programs address managing and living with asthma, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease and are open to both adult and child members.
