1 District 186: High School Health Education Syllabus Philosophy Statement: Health Education is a very important part of a high school students educational experience. Many students in high school do not have the awareness to recognize how their current behaviors will influence the rest of their lives. Our goal is to enhance awareness and encourage students to make behavioral changes that will help them develop habits to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Illinois Learning Standards of Physical Development and Health State Goal 22: Understand the principles of health promotion and the prevention and treatment of illness and injury. Learning Standard A: Learning Standard B: Learning Standard C: Explain the basic principles of health promotion, illness prevention and safety. Describe and explain the factors that influence health among individuals, groups, and communities. Explain how the environment can affect health. State Goal 23: Understand human body systems and factors that influence growth and development. Learning Standard A: Learning Standard B: Learning Standard C: Describe and explain the structure and functions of the human body systems and how they interrelate. Explain the effects of health-related actions on the body systems. Describe factors that affect growth and development. State Goal 24: Promote and enhance health and well-being through the use of effective communication and decision-making skills. Learning Standard A: Learning Standard B: Learning Standard C: Demonstrate procedures for communication in positive ways, resolving differences and preventing conflict. Apply decision-making skills related to the protection and promotion of individual health. Demonstrate skills essential to enhancing health and avoiding dangerous situations. ASSESSMENT Students will be graded on classwork, homework, participation, projects, quizzes, and tests. A point system will be used (not weighted) with greater emphasis on projects and tests. At the end of the semester a cumulative final exam will be given.
