2 Thank you for your interest in Christian Youth In Action training. We are excited about what God is going to do through you and in you this year at training. Please read through this Student Guide carefully, paying special attention to the dress code, rules, and what to bring list. Orientation Wednesday, June 19 6:00 PM in the Chapel During Registration you will ü Receive your name tag ü Pay any balance due ü Receive your room assignment ü Receive your teaching materials and T-Shirt ü Give information about any medications to designated person ü Turn in cell phones ü Turn in your Bible Lesson Study questions ü Sign up for the Talent Night. The CYIA Praise and Talent Night is Saturday, June 22. Please come with your talent of choice already prepared, if possible. ü Turn in your Memory Verse list or say your verses to the verse listeners Your parents will receive a copy of the schedule for CYIA and information on sending mail and contacting the CYIA office. Overview of daily schedule The schedule begins with "rise and shine" at 6:30 a.m. Daily quiet time is scheduled before breakfast and classes take up the day until late afternoon. After recreation and supper additional classes are held with dismissal to dorms and lights out by 10:30 p.m. A detailed schedule will be available at registration. Fun activities and free time are also included. The Culture of CYIA: If you travel to another country, you do not expect the people of that country to change to be like you. You must adapt to their time table, their foods, their accommodations. CYIA is a training school not a camp. CYIA has a culture of structure: Wake up time, Lights Out time; class times; demonstration times; study time; outloud practice times; free time. It is important for you to have a right attitude about the structure and program of CYIA. Please ask God to help you stay focused on what He is teaching you and look forward to the children that will hear the message you will be teaching them this summer. Revised October

3 Standards and guidelines expected with CEF It would be impossible to make rules to govern every type of situation. Good behavior must come from the heart, in love and obedience to Jesus Christ and should not be mere conformity to man-made regulations. The following rules, however, are to be strictly observed. v Respect for staff and fellow students is expected at all times v Godly attitudes are to be displayed in every situation. v Improper speech, vulgarity, profanity, and lying have no place in our fellowship. v Giving unwanted attention, either verbally, physically, or through social media that could be considered harassment, will not be tolerated and can result in expulsion from the program. v Students are expected to dress and abide by the dress code. v Pranks of any kind, played on students or staff, will not be tolerated. Respect for others and their belongings is expected. v Treat the facilities with care and respect. We seek to develop individuals who will faithfully serve the Lord and be good witnesses for Him. Therefore, an attitude of loyalty to Jesus Christ is expected. CYIA Dress Code The way you dress will either draw attention to yourself or will magnify the Lord (1 Timothy 2:9-10 and 1 Peter 3:3-4). Ladies (students) v Shorts (must be longer than your fingertips when arms are at your side); v Dress slacks and Jeans (no holes in the jeans above the knee or on the seat) v Dresses and skirts should be just above the knee when sitting (even if worn with leggings) v T-shirts with appropriate words and graphics are acceptable. v Shirts that are not low cut, tight; no cleavage or exposed skin between top and waistband when seated or while arms are raised. No strapless, or thin-strap shirts or sundresses where any part of the bra can be seen. v Swim suit with dark shorts and dark short worn over the swim suit for water activities. v Nicer clothes for church and commissioning service. 4 Preparing for CYIA 1. Submit all the paperwork: application with all forms completed, deposit, references 2. Get with your director/staff person for an interview, to discuss this guide, and for CYIA Pretraining sessions. 3. Review the dress code before you pack to be sure you have clothes that abide by the dress code. What to bring to CYIA v Bible (KJV or ESV for teaching times) and your preferred Bible for quiet time; v New Testament or small Bible for Open Air. v Pencils, pens and paper v Bedding (blankets, sheets, pillow etc) v Toiletries (towels, wash clothes, toothbrush, soap, shampoo, etc.) v Light jacket or sweatshirt and rain gear v Clothes that meet the dress code including dress-up attire v Hangers v Extra money for canteen, missionary offering, stamps v Alarm clock v Memory verse list v Musical instrument and sheet music or accompaniment tracks (if desired) v Fan v Required medication (You will need to talk with a staff member at campus registration.) v Your driver s license or other identification v Camera What should NOT be brought to training: v Radio (unless it is your clock radio alarm clock) v CD player, ipod, MP3 player v Laptop computer v Hand-held games, squirt guns, laser guns v Secular magazines v Food items (Food cannot be kept in rooms, suitcases or duffel bags for sanitation reasons.) If you have food allergies, you can bring replacement food that will be kept in the kitchen. This is a unique environment to concentrate on developing yourself for serving the Lord. Bring items that will help you and leave home those items that may hinder. Cell Phone Policy Students will turn in cell phones at registration where they will be marked Each day during the long break right before supper, students may use their cell phones in the commons area only. Please understand that there is no guarantee that you will have the full hour to use your phone. Before going through the supper line, students must turn in their cell phones Failure to turn in your cell phone at the appropriate time will result in loss of phone privileges for the next day. 5 Communication with Family and Friends If your family and friends want to send mail to you, they can send it to: CYIA, (student s name), Grace Christian University, 1011 Aldon St, Grand Rapids, MI They can also send a letter via to cyiacefofmi@gmail.com with the student s name in the subject line. These s will be opened and printed for the student by Mr. Hammar, Administration Coordinator, or Mrs. Hammar, CYIA Director. If you need to call home for any reason, outside the allowed cell time use, please receive permission from the CYIA Director to make a phone call. If your parent needs to get in touch with you outside the hour you will have your cell phone, they can call Mr. Hammar (517) or Mrs. Hammar (517) Family, friends or guests Due to the intensive schedule and the challenge of locating students across campus, drop-by visits are not encouraged. It takes valuable time away from the students concentrating on their preparation for ministry. Special visits need to be cleared by the CYIA Director beforehand. Families are invited to the Praise and Talent night on Saturday evening, June 22 at 6:45 pm in the chapel. Commissioning Service The Commissioning Service is the culmination of the training and the beginning of your ministry. This service is the last evening of training. Parents/guardians and friends are invited to the service, which starts at 7:00 p.m. This will be held at Grace Christian University chapel. Revised October
