March 14, 2018 at the Heinz History Center. If you qualify for the state competition, you ll need to provide your own transportation to Dickinson College on Tues. May 22, Categories include animation, computer fair logo, digital movie, graphic design, programming, and web page design. The rules for each category can be accessed at this website: Cleveland Clinic Distance Learning Through video conference and live streaming, you can meet with surgeons, professionals, and experts from The Cleveland Clinic for lectures, interactive discussions, and career exploration. If the topics or careers below interest you, then please stop in the GOAL Office, sign up for a session, and pick up a permission form. All sessions run from 9:00-10:00 in the NASH PLACE. There is a session for every month, but the first few sessions are as follows: March 13, Meet a Rehabilitation Technician April 17, Meet a Health IT Professional Grandview Mentors Important dates to mark on your calendars: ALL MENTORS should attend a training session EITHER Monday, March 12th during homeroom OR Tuesday, March 13th during homeroom in the NASH Library MPR. Please attend so that you know the plans for March 15th. If you cannot attend the training for some reason, please see Mrs. Lombardi ASAP. 2 BRASH Tutors Upcoming dates for after school tutoring are below: Monday, March 19th Monday, April 23rd We leave by school bus from NASH at 2:20 p.m. and return around 6:00 p.m. Let Mrs. Lombardi know if you would like to join us to provide after school homework help to some of our friends from Grandview! Spots are available for both dates. Hamlet We will head to the O Reilly Theater to see Hamlet on April 25, This event is already full and tickets are paid for! All students who turned in money will attend, even if you were initially on the Wait List. We will leave from NASH at 8:15. Bring cash for breakfast, as we will stop to eat on the way to the theater. Dress up for the play! We ll be back at school around 2:00. Joie de Vivre Our trip to the Frick Art and Historical Center for Joie de Vivre is on Wed. March 21. After studying original 18th-century French paintings, drawings, furniture, and interior design, students explore the dynamics of peasant/court life and the French Revolution. Students take a tour and participate in a theater-based workshop where they reenact the French Revolution IN COSTUME! We will also tour the new exhibit featuring Impressionist artwork by Van Gogh, Monet, and Degas. This trip is so much fun! We ll leave from NASH at 8:10. Please pack a lunch. We ll be back around 2: Day Poetry Challenge April is National Poetry month. We hope to form a community of writers to participate in this year s WordXWord 30 Day Poetry Challenge. There are 30 days in April. You ll get a new prompt each day. Write 30 poems in one month--selecting the best to publish online or share with our group. Sign up in GOAL! Author Talk with Megan Gaudino Ms. Megan Gaudino is a successful Young Adult Fiction writer with a large internet following who actually started writing in middle school. She is also NAI s Library Secretary. Ms. Gaudino has a publisher and is currently working on her third novel. You can find her books ( Always Kiss Me Goodnight and Never Kiss and Tell ) on Amazon or Good Reads. Would you like to learn more about her work, the writing, process, or how to get published? Come to a talk on Monday, March 12th at NAI s Library from 3:15-4:30. Students should plan to get their own transportation to and from the event--though shuttles leave from NASH to NAI if you need transportation to the school. 3 Dr. Maya Angelou s Grandchildren Dr. Maya Angelou s grandchildren are coming to Pittsburgh to celebrate the opening of the regional premiere of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. They are coming to NASH on Friday, March 9 th at 11:00 in the NASH Library to discuss Dr. Angelou s life and work! Sign up in GOAL if you can participate in Friday s in-house presentation. Career Symposium for Business & Communications Would you like to learn more about jobs in the fields of business or communications? More specifically, are you interested in a career in corporate marketing, communications, or public relations? If so, please join us for a career symposium at Arconic on April 4th from 9:30-12:00. Arconic Technology Center is the world s largest light metals research center, and their location is in Pittsburgh! We are invited to bring 8-10 students to hear presentations from professionals in the career fields mentioned above. Do not miss this unique opportunity! Sign up today in GOAL. JA: Titan Challenge - March 22: teams of three: $30 per team. Registration money due by Friday March 9- this week. I cannot register you without the fees paid. Titan Challenge is an online business building simulation that rewards winners with gift cards in the amount of $100, $50 or $25!! The simulation is held here at NASH from homeroom until noon when you can have lunch after completing the game. Three students to a team. Global Leadership and World Affairs Council Events Many opportunities on the calendar for those of you interested in International issues, events and careers. Salam Neighbor- A student film screening and Panel Discussion March 15@ SouthSide Works Cinema:An all day event. T his is a screening of the award-winning film that features two young filmmakers who seek to understand the human side of the Syrian refugee crisis by living among 85,000 Syrians in Jordan s Za atari refugee camp. This is followed by a panel discussion on issues affecting refugees in Pittsburgh and around the world. See Mrs. Will for your permission slip. April 5: A Dialogue with Ambassador Ryan Crocker : Middle East Meltdown: Causes & Consequences for the US. Seneca Valley Intermediate HS. This is a morning program; leave at homeroom and return by 11:15. 3

4 April 12:Global Careers Forum : A career day to learn from professionals about the diverse array of international careers and key experiences and skills needed to succeed. Pittsburgh Allderdice High School. This will be an all day event. April 19: Global Video Conference Program : Medical Ethics Conferenc e with students from around the world. Tentative date.@ NASH April 23: Global Video Conference: Freedom of Beliefs : tentative date at NASH Mail In Math Team: Note different date! Mail In Math meets once a month in the library room for one half hour after school. What an easy way to rack up some extracurricular points and maybe some extra credit points. Join us on Tuesday, March 20 after school. We are currently in 5th place in the state of Pennsylvania. There are a bunch of schools tied for 6th place...we need to hold on to our position. Let s try our best this month! Math Teams Travel Championship We will participate in the League Championship in April. Hooray for the team!! Time, place, date are all to be announced. Model UN : Westminster College April 11 : T he last simulation of the year. This is a competitive and fun event. Please check Blackboard for updates MOOT ICC: International Criminal Court April 21 and 22. Informational meetings are being scheduled to prepare the written brief required to compete in this two-day event. Check with Mrs. Will to make sure you are receiving the updates.the High School Moot International Criminal Court (ICC) Competition is designed to introduce high school students to the work of the ICC and how important international human rights issues are dealt with in an international criminal justice context. See Mrs. Will for more information. Aviation Careers: If you are interested and curious about careers in aviation or want to learn more about them; please see or send an to Mrs. Will. We have an aviation engineer and pilot willing to come and discuss career paths. Physics Bowl On Thursday, April 5 we will gather to test our knowledge of Physics in one of two 4

5 categories. Though sign ups are closed, there is one extra test. First come, first served. Integration Bee The 2018 High School Integration Bee will take place on Sunday, April 8, 2018, 2-5 pm in 343 Alumni Hall at Pitt. Sign up to test your knowledge of integrals at Pitt in a fun environment. This is a high spirited competition in a fun environment to evaluate integrals. Just like the Godiva chocolate store, we offer samples to those who ask for one. Come on into the GOAL Office to sign up and get yourself a FREE integral mathematics competition designed for middle and high school students. Purple Comet This has been conducted annually since The 2018 contest will be on April 11. Teams may be from 1-6 students. Form a team or sign up to be part of a group in the GOAL Office. You get 90 minutes for 30 problems. The math is challenging, but people usually have fun. You can bring in snacks and collaborate. F = ma We may have a student(s) who qualified to advance to the second round of the Physics Olympiad. It will be held here at NASH in March. Bio Olympiad We we will soon know if any of our students qualified for the second round of the Bio Olympiad: March 12 March 19 to 23 Semi-finalists posted to website (top 10% or 500 students) Semi-Final Examination Administered Toronto Biology Olympiad Thursday, April 26 at NASH. Seven students will sit for the Toronto National Biology Competition. Capture The Flag Computer Hacking Competition March 24 Pitt We went to this last year and learned a lot. It is a terrific competition for a team. You do not need traditional hacking skills to learn a lot here-- it is a competition friendly to a range of skill levels. Challenges include: coding, cryptography, social engineering. Top teams split a scholarship to the colleges of their choice. Sign up in the GOAL office. 5

6 Silver Eye Center for Photography Are you interested in joining us for our Silver Eye Photography field trip in May Twenty students will get to participate in an instructional session, a photography workshop, an exhibition tour, and an evaluation of the photos taken. The cost will be approximately $20. Please sign up now to demonstrate interest, even though the trip isn t until May; we want to make sure we have a minimum of 15 students for this trip to run!
